Fitterer says " We'll have to do something with Sam. "
mav1234 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
This really isn't born out by the facts of his time at NY tho... He did have a usage decline with Darnold slightly, but nothing like this year, not even close, and he was still productive there... same YPC with and without Darnold at NY, and fewer than 1 reception less per game with Darnold. Similar TDs. Now that doesn't mean he *liked* darnold, which maybe is a bigger issue with him. tbh Robby hasn't played particularly well since midway thru last season... Dude's average just tanked. -
I thought someone had said there were very preliminary inquiries made last week when we first found out Sam also had a hurt shoulder, but not sure what their source was. I think it is highly unlikely Rhule would make the call to Cam without some indication he'd listen... although maybe I've got Rhule wrong.

Some of you guys making waaaaaay too big a deal about shaqs comments. Shaq is dialed in to the next game, that's not a knock on Cam.
-
Watching just some of the highlights from last year, Cam definitely can still navigate a collapsing pocket... He'll need that here, heh.

Carolina Panthers agree to terms with Cam Newton.

It's a football move because we don't need to find a QB for 5 years from now. We need one now. We have a seemingly healthy CMC, 2 1k yard receivers and a super promising 2nd rnd pick, and an incredible, stacked D with a bunch of 1 year contracts about to expire. We've been in every game but 1 all year, and we have a real shot to make the playoffs. Once were in the playoffs all bets are off. Plus Cam could potentially solve QB for a couple years while we find the young guy for the next 5 years, without wasting more draft picks on retreads. Best of all we get a trial run of that this year for a few games for a cap hit that doesn't hurt us next year if it doesn't work out. -
I dunno if I'm counted in your Darnold lover camp but I don't expect a miracle with Cam. However other posters have consistently pointed out Sam was making the OL look worse. I think that is somewhat true... So now we get to see what happens when he isn't there anymore..

Most backups - at least those with good physical tools - make mistakes when pressed into long term action, tho. That's a big reason they're backups and not permanent starters. -

Sam's always been able to string a few good games together before whatever is going on in his head catches up to him... Backup role would fit that... He's supposedly a great locker room guy... And I do think most of his teammates respect his toughness and desire to win for them, even tho now it's obvious he can't do that across a season. We could do worse with a backup tbh... As we've shown -
I don't think it's that simple. The rest of the guys all know Brady's offense. Cam will need to learn that offense. Brady is gonna need to really earn his keep to quickly adapt to Cams style and coach him up in the scheme. We've already seen some option offense with Darnold... I'd expect much more with Cam.
-
This decision is all upside tbh. Even if Cam doesn't perform here, most fans won't blame the team for trying. Cam is the best option we have at QB. He also fits the new identity we are trying to emphasize perfectly.

CAM NEWTON IS NOT THE ANSWER. THIS IS A MISTAKE.
mav1234 replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
All I'm hoping for is a QB that can get the ball to our playmakers and avoid turnovers. Cam is more than capable of both of those things still. He got the ball to NE's playmakers... such as they were. Edelman had one of his best games of his career with him. Myers had a career year, and averaged 3 ypr more than he is this year. He gave D. Byrd multiple highlight reel passes. Career year for the dude with more than 600 yards. Byrd might be our 4th receiver... Or 5th lol. 5 of Cams 10 ints last year came in 2 games post covid... The rest of the year he was overall good at taking care of the ball. So Cam fits what we needed this year and potentially next too. -
If anyone could get buy in from OBJ it would be Cam. But how can you look at our receivers and say that's an area we need improvement? This is gonna be the best WR group overall Cam has ever had...

You're killing my optimism here I do think it's a tough game. Arizona's D is pretty good and I don't think we will have an easy time rushing against it if we can't get the thread of the passing game going... But hopefully a couple of strikes from Cam can open things up. I do wish this move was made on Monday... Give Cam a full week... But now this is a real test of Brady's ability to coach IMO. -

Yeah I think so too. Cam won't be perfect by any means... But tbh, he shouldn't need to be. We had a handful of decent drives the last couple weeks where the QB didn't need to do a damn thing, and instead gave the ball to the opposing team... So maybe with just a little bit of working Cam in can be enough. Cam is generally really good at protecting the ball (if you exclude his 2 post covid games, he had something like a 1.5% int rate. That's really good). if we have to lean on him to win us the game through some multi score comeback, that's unreasonable and probably won't work out... But if we can stay even or pull ahead and ride our D I think Cam's athleticism and dynamic playmaking will be enough. -

Winning games isn't a fuging losing mentality, wtf... This is an attempt to win this year. Is Cam gonna lead us to the Superbowl? Unlikely, but he's got great weapons on offense and an exceptional D to lean on. But you don't get to a superbowl by losing games. -

I agree, but for a team that thinks they can make the playoffs, they're gonna start the guy that gives them the best option to win. That's gonna be Cam. I think if Brady is all he should be we can implement a gameplan that emphasizes Cams strengths... Leans on the RB, utilizes our receivers and our two backs that are good out of the backfield, etc. I just think this team has enough talent on O that without film on Brady+CMC+DJ+Cam, defenses will be at a huge disadvantage. -

What's the point? You can equally bad and sometimes worse low light videos from plenty of players. If Cam can be as dynamic as he was with the awful supporting cast the Pats had (albeit one of the better OCs in the league ... ), he can have success here too. -

Cam made Byrd look incredible frequently lol. Cam had a handful of very bad games, and all of them came after COVID, with half his INTs in 15 games coming in the 2 RIGHT after he came back. He's still dynamic and exciting to watch, and he'll have one of the best supporting casts of his career on O. No more excuses for Brady and Robby tho. -

mav1234 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
It depends what the question is. This isn't a QB heavy draft. if the question is, is Cam a 5 year answer at QB... Probably not. But if the question is who is the best option for this team to compete this year with the possibility of building on that going into next year? Cam is the ONLY answer. If Cam works out over the next few games he'll be a starter here for a few years again, lock down QB, and let us move towards finding a longer term QB at a pace that isn't desperation. -
If this FO was serious about winning they would bring back Cam
mav1234 replied to OneBadCat's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm happy to admit how wrong I was about Cam coming back. I just hope our OL gels and our OC gets creative. Cam is still dynamic enough that if Boy Genius is all he's cracked up to be we should be able to score frequently and easily. -

I challenge anyone that thinks Cam is completely broken to watch his 2020 highlights. Yes, he throws bad balls occasionally not in those, he's not in MVP form, but he is a significant upgrade over what we've seen the last 5 weeks (edit: what we've seen all year tbh). He gives us a real chance to succeed... And it also puts Brady on a real fuging hot seat imo. -

All of Darnold's arm strength doesn't matter when his timing is trash and he can't see the field tho... Cam can still throw a deep ball, it just isn't as good as it was. -

I think this is what went down too. I don't think Rhule was lying when he said he was excited to coach Cam, but I think he also knew that other options were emerging etc which made it disingenuous. Still it wasn't a one man decision IMO. -

I think it's also "look we don't want to keep negotiating with you... You want multi year, we want 2 years, but we want you to play against the Cardinals more" deal lol. Cam gambling on himself this year going for 1 year over 2. Just the kind of move I think we'd expect from him, hehe.
