you hope he is. which is fine. but he is most definitely a fringe starter at this moment and Rhule doesn't want a to deal w/ what a Menshew type brings. Fanbases dramatize everything (that isn't unique to the huddle). So does the media.
-
Sam Darnold is a fringe starter. If we hadn't been in the spot we are in he would be a backup QB this year. Now maybe he can be redeemed and developed. Maybe not. But if you put another player like that on the roster (like a Menshew).....it creates something Rhule then has to deal with immediately. Half this board would be calling for Menshew to start today. I would be. And that is why Menshew and comparables to him aren't here. You see me calling for PJ? Nope.
-
that's the catch. A competent backup becomes someone Rhule would have to deal with in relation to Sam....in terms of the media, fans, etc. He doesn't want to deal with that. If Carolina hadn't signed Sam Darnold and made him starter...he would most likely be a competent backup somewhere right now. Sam comes out slow....and Rhule would have to deal with stuff he doesn't want to deal with. If there is no high caliber backup, there is less noise.

I think Will Grier clears waivers and is right back with the team. There is no indication the Panthers want to add talent that threatens Sam. Rhule doesn't want the headache.

Wins? Cam had more wins than Sam and Teddy combined last year…..and he got sick with COVID while doing it with no weapons
-
RBs are RBs. QBs are QBs. Availability of QBs is pretty important. CMC wasn't wearing his mask on the sidelines this weekend so I assume he is now vaccinated.
-
@CPcavedweller NFL rules are the NFL rules on vaccination. Not being vaccinated impacts player availability. You want to talk about that in this section? Have at it. You want to talk about COVID in some other manner, take it to the Tinderbox.

can't go by stats alone. they never tell the actual story. He barely played and had a INT. The pass was great. Like a 40 yard laser that the WR let a defender strip from him. Cam had a good preseason.
-
Cam IMO has always had a little Yogi Berra to him. I like it. guys like Shaq aren't on TV for their expert commentary. I mean, he would need to right fit/role. You wouldn't put Cam in a booth.
-
Cam would be great on TV. He has a TV face and smile. All the personality and then some.
-
will be interesting to see the info all trickle out. it makes too much sense to have him on the roster. Given how he looked and his cost. I could see that. BB did appear to actually like Cam. If Cam asked to be cut....I could see BB honoring it if he was moving on. That's just all tea reading and guessing though. I'm sure we will find something out soon though.
-
Yeah, but this is Cam Newton. Journeyman backup IMO was never in the cards to finish out his career.... even if he technically could do the job.
-
I love Cam. I think he still had something left in him. But he was never going to be the guy that played here again. Going to Mac Jones makes sense. Mac Jones has looked good IMO. And I am a Mac hater. but it is surprising Cam wasn't kept. Gotta think it wasn't about play. Either the COVID issue became a deal breaker or Cam simply couldn't remain once told he would be the backup.
-
I wish Cam would just announce his retirement. Hate to see the ending get worse and worse. forget Houston. Cam's ego and career has already taken a big hit......he would just get murdered in Houston. He went to NE to prove everyone wrong. That opportunity doesn't exist in Hou.
-
Cam looked pretty good in preseason IMO. I'd agree, he currently is better than Sam. But that ship has sailed here. And I frankly get other teams not wanting to deal with a high profile unvaccinated add. NFL rules make Cam an undependable option.
-
Cam actually had a decent preseason on field. He is also cheap. I think if you don't want him it is simply COVID headaches or Cam not willing to be happy being a backup that got him cut. Otherwise, even if you start Mac Jones.....keeping Cam would make sense.
-
what a sad ending to Cam's career. if you want to get a job on a roster....being an unvaccinated FA doesn't seem like a great spot to be in. I don't see him being picked up. Would probably take injury at this point for a team to pick him up.

the new braintrust just passed on Menshew and he went for a bag of Doritos. seems pretty clear they don't want anything but Sam Darnold IMO.
-
I think the Sam and Teddy decisions would be what dooms him. Not which bad backup he kept between PJ and Grier. Neither should be the backup and the Panther had a tons of opportunity to add better players at QB......but his Sam decision appears to have prevented that. But I do believe if Rhule fails....the QB position and how he managed it will be his downfall. But that's not a conversation about choosing between Grier and PJ.
-
I understand some want PJ cut and for us to add a veteran who is better. I don't see that happening. For the same reason Menshew wasn't an option. If you add someone better than PJ.....well, you now could have a QB competition with Sam Darnold. Which Rhule doesn't want to deal with. And he would, if Sam remains the inconsistent player he has always been. I lobbied for it initially. I think if you were actually trying to salvage Darnold you would give him a better QB room. As well as a lot of other things we haven't. But the reality is, a veteran QB on the roster that is better than the PJ/Grier tier.....would likely create an atmosphere where Rhule would have to deal with questions on QB that he doesn't want to deal with.
-
my bad, I misread it lol, I thought you said he pushed the ball 5 yards downfield. As in checked downed. You said something completely different. Carry on.
-
I mean, that just isn't true. You can dislike PJ, but his instincts are to push the ball downfield. Which is what he does. The correct PJ critique would be...to be critical of him as he attempts to push the ball downfield. Sam Darnold has been the checkdown king of the offseason.

Backups totally contained and bottled up our offense for nearly two full quarters. then with 5 minutes left in the first half they did orchestrate a very nice 2 minute drill….but it still was against backups. The bar is pretty low for that to get the praise it is getting. We looked like a team that has a lot to sort out on offense to be competitive this season.
