Erving's "effort" on the play that got Sam hurt
CRA replied to trueblade's topic in Carolina Panthers
this is the view I watched. C comes face to with the MLB and does nothing the entire play. All he has to do go put hands on the MLB. Not seal off anything. Just slow him. He does nothing. Like I said, I don't know the play call, but it sure would have worked better if the C just went up put hands on the MLB. Erving's eyes were on the OLB the entire time. To me, it looks like he just missed his assignment and then went into watch mode. The DE knocks Erving off balance initially and he can't go out and get to his block. Tremble takes out Ervings guy and doesn't make it upfield as a result. But who knows. -
the most likely answer, is a NFL LB just called it like he saw it though. and I don't know if it is overblown or not. That's not one of my primary Sam issues. I know Sam has lots of issues with his game....and when you add them all up togther, the collective sum is clearly problematic and has been. I just think more often than not it's the two things being true aspect applying. Sam Darnold simply can't see the field. Collectively, the NFL world has made this point loud and clear. I assume his present teammates know this problem. I assume his coaches do. It causes him to do really stupid things with the ball and he often will put people in bad spots because of that. Does that impact his WRs? If they are human? I assume it would to some degree. How much? Who knows. Most NFL players at some point are going to have to deal with that. All of that can be true. and at the same time, Robby can be playing like trash this season....and DJ Moore has never had Nuk Hopkins like dependable hands. and the OL can be weak and cause a host of problem for others. From QB to playcaller. and Sam can still make horrible decisions and not be a good QB right now...that are not be caused by the OL or Brady. Joe Brady can be young and lacking. Joe Brady can also be screwed from actually having the basic resources a young and inexperiecned OC probably needs. He probably at least needs vet QB, or a good QB, or at least a decent OL. Something. Lot of things can be true.

well, hopefully, the NFL handles this better than the Leonard Little days.

I don't know....I could make the arguement it's just as much on our center if not more so than the LT. Hard to really know, without knowing the actual playcall. C makes his way to the MLB and basically just stares at him directly in the eye. Does nothing. LT's man looks like it could of been the guy Tremble ended up taking on....and maybe Trembe was technically suppose to get that DB to pave the easy TD. If the C made contact with the MLB then all Sam ends up getting is the DB...with Tremble taking over the botched job by the LT. who knows. only guy that looked like he understood what run blocking is happened to be the rookie TE. That's the Panthers for you. -
Vilma was busy calling another football game the week prior. That's what he does now. Vilma was a dirty LB in the NFL for a long time. He simply called out what he saw. Sam threw DJ into a hit to open the game...and DJ made a business decision on it. I don't think that is THE singular issue with the problems on offense. I think Sam and Rhule have cooked up a soup with many different ingrediants. But Sam is putting in more ingredients than anyone else from a singular player aspect.

Cam was at least built to technically win virtually every collision came across. And the further he got past the line of scrimmage the bigger those odds were stacked in his favor. Cam was simply a dominant runner. Sam isn't a dominant runner. He also has a long history of ball security issues. Sam needs to get down. Pick up what he can get and let others do the head knocking. Unless it's 3rd or 4th down, he needs to get down. Big picture, that's the smart play for Sam. Cam and Sam aren't comparable as to what should or shouldn't happen when they take off as runners. -
it's not one comment though. 89 wasn't the commentator the other week when it was pointed out Sam opened up a game throwing a hosptial ball to DJ. He just didn't use the phrase hosptial ball. Think it was Vilma that time.

I personally don’t have faith in this staff, think Rhule will simply attempt his Atl game plan. NE lines up to take the run away. We punt every down. Get down. Then it becomes INT city time.
-
That's just Cam. Belichick has struggled with mobile QBs from the likes of Smith, Gabbert to Wilson, Cam. The only mobile QB Bill really has owned is Tyrod. And he was a divsional opponent. I don't care who we start. Joe Brady needs to run the QB this week. Creatively and often. Otherwise, it is going to be INT city for any QB we start we we get down and are forced to lean on the pass.
-
Priority #1 is stopping the run and Harris. If they are able to run downhill at us it will neutralize our pass rush. Stop the run and then we get a shot at making Mac Jones miserable. If PJ plays, Joe Brady needs to add in some read option runs and get him moving a lot. Historically, Bill doesn't like that type QB play. If Sam plays, they just need to call a fair share of called QB runs. Best chance is to pray for an ugly game.

I think Burns was perhaps overhyped coming into this season. Just meaning the bar was set so high that even good would disappoint. But he is playing really good IMO. Reddick quietly on pace to challenge the single season sack record in Carolina.
-
That Atl Cam run might actually be the most impressive run he ever had. If all 11 defenders didn’t try to stop him it was at least close to 11. Just a tank.
-
they aren’t long term answers. they aren’t short term answers. we need an entirely new QB room. Remainder of the season should be the Sam and PJ farewell tour.
-
Well historically, Belichick has struggled with mobile QBs.

Looking at the big picture, building a team question

Andy Reid traded for and brought in a QB day 1…and then immediately started winning. 5 straight winning seasons as contenders before Mahomes became QB. They couldn’t get over the hump with Smith being so risk adverse. But QB always mattered to Reid. the KC model was never worry about QB last. -
PJ is probably overly aggressive. I think the actual WRs in the Lions game PJ started…had more receiving yards than any game Sam has started for us. becomes a real problem when the field shrinks in the redzone with someone like that. If he plays, Joe Brady has to get creative with the run in the redzone and take it out of his hands IMO. You tell PJ to pass….he is going to pass.
-
Sam Darnold had 3 INTs and completed 56% of his passes vs Philly. Philly has been on pace as a team this year to allow opponents the completion % that Brees set the single season passing record with. Sam is a problem. Not some victim.

then Matt Rhule should be shown the door -
So this was or wasn’t a hospital ball by Darnold?
CRA replied to TheBigKat's topic in Carolina Panthers
Gronk IMO is very similar to Cam. One of the most unique physical mismatches the league has had to deal with....and opponents went about trying to destroy them as that was an easier option than actually defending them. -
lol I don't think PJ Walker is NFL material When you here someone say Sam Darnold shouldn't be on the NFL field and is basically PJ Walker tier QB.....you think that somehow is hyping up PJ. Again, this isn't a PJ Walker discussion in reality, it remains a Sam Darnold one. I have been painfully clear that I want Rhule forced to remove PJ and Sam from the roster next year. And the surest way to force Rhule off both is for PJ to take the field. We aren't winning this year with Sam. We aren't winning with PJ. Might as well make the Ls productive. Which means forcing Rhule to rebuild his QB room. And Rhule's handling of the QB spot has been one predictable mess after another. if the never lost gifs make that hard to understand? Well, I just find that fun.

Well, if I knew I wasn’t going to keep Teddy? Who was better and already paid for? I would have added Tyrod, Mitch, Gardner, etc (all better) and probably added someone in the draft. And if I didn’t love Mac or Fields I would have still added QB talent. And still might of carried 3 and paid and brought in some old vet to collect a check and help teach those of 2 guys about what the NFL is all about. it isn’t just that they signed Sam. They signed Sam as the only option. Sam or die. And Sam was just too comically bad to do that with. Think that again points to what an inexperienced FO we have.

well, for the record I repeatedly said the defender on the play should mostly get credit for a great play. They get paid too. I do think it still a standard example of Sam being late and slow though. And Sam routinely messes up throws and prevents plays from working as drawn up by playing them wrong and slow. It’s consistent. Sam’s probably a really nice guy putting in a ton of effort. Same would apply to PJ probably too. So how much weight should that carry?
