the market just said 3 first rounders was the cost to go up to #3 and draft a college QB. And that kid frankly, is no safer gamble than pulling Sam out of NY and trying him. given the current atmosphere. That is a decent deal. ESPN talking heads were shocked the Jets couldn't get more.
-
I'm not sure signing Sam Darnold means the Panthers couldn't draft a QB at 8 if one fell though. I mean, everyone assumed Teddy would/should go if we drafted one of these guys. So that means we were going to bring in someone else regardless.
-
the teams around Tannehill and Darnold aren't really comparable though. Tannehill's weren't great. But many of his teams looked pretty dang solid vs what we saw in NY. Especially this year.
-
I mean, the Jets started a near 40 year old RB last year. Got no talent at WR. Have horrible coaches. Sam Darnold sucked. He might suck here. But there was no possible outcome for any QB but to suck in NY.
-
I don't like the added 4th. BUT given how inflated the QB market has shown to be right now, it's not a bad price to kick the Sam Darnold tires. It's not fun, sexy and exciting. But that probably is the smartest move right now. You could still draft Fields if he fell. But now you don't have to be 49ers level stupid.
-
I don't think they would be willing to own the position of potentially giving us a franchise QB like Fields that could haunt them for a decade. For that reason, I think we are just removed as an option.

PFF grade on throws past first read since 2019
CRA replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
First half of the regular season, he had a 84% completion percentage and 11 TDs - 0 INTs. I mean to nitpick Fields' game, you have to basically on look at the 2020 COVID games. Outside of that he was arguably the best QB in college football the past 2 seasons. And you can argue that body of work when he was healthy was better than Trevor's. I still give the edge to Trevor but it is a legit conversation. And his body of work of high level play dwarfs anyone else not named Trevor. -

and his bad games only occurred when Ohio St was flipped on their head with COVID running crazy. 2019 he was arguably the best QB in college football. Started 2020 in the same position. Fields was absoutely nuts to start of 2020. Then covid hit. Then they got everyone back on the field and in practice....and probably had the best singular game we have seen in college football the last 2 seasons against Clemson. I toss out Bama because he was playing w/ that rib injury. Rib injury vs Bama and Clemson are to very different things. You could shoot up vs Clemson directly following it. Injury sets in after that. -
PFF grade on throws past first read since 2019

Fields could of sat all season and been pick 1b. Ohio St (Big10) only played because of Fields. Maybe not the only reason, but without Fields though, they don't play at all this season. athletes like Fields and Lawrence flexing their muscle/influence defiantly worked against schools doing what they preferred. Schools and athletics being distinguished in this convo. -

NFL Draft: No, Justin Fields is not a ‘one read’ quarterback (usatoday.com) There are some clips included in here. And kinda like Lawerence...when you can accurately hit your first read (and Justin Fields is the most accurate QB in the draft).....you simply make the throw. People out of boredom are simply using the fact Fields and Ohio St (when healthy) are lethal against him. -
PFF grade on throws past first read since 2019
CRA replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
well, it is true that the recent hot takes about Justin Fields have been fictional and bogus. The only a one read QB stuff. That is the clearly people just repeating the same false narrative. Watching his games easily disproves that part. Trevor Lawrence does throw to his first read as much as anyone being discussed. Just a fact. Doesn't mean he can't read a D. Clemson O by design inflates that number. PFF will always suffer because of not actually knowing the playcall. And not knowing that messes the ability to grade certain plays correctly. But they get a lot of things right. -
Zach Wilson is boom or bust and should not be started year one
CRA replied to Ja Rhule's topic in Carolina Panthers
BYU played a super weak schedule this year (they had better overall talent than every opponent along with a good OL and scheme). Coming into the season Wilson wasn’t even guaranteed to be the starter. Better opposing talent exposes a lot of his flaws. He pays more for throws that really aren’t there and his bailing from the pocket. to me he is more of inbetween the 2019 and 2020 player. Which isn’t what is being sold. -
Well if 5 QBs go before 8...that means either Chase, Sewell or Pitts would be there at 8. And they all 3 have top 5 grades and IMO are better players than the top 2 CBs. The 3 are of them are just too good to let need dictate in that spot. Rest of the draft I would want need to play a big role though
-
But in the scenario given 5 QBs get drafted before our pick, right? Chase, Pitts, Sewell, etc all on the board? I just think they are in a slightly different tier. It’s not that I don’t like Surtain though.
-
I don’t like a CB at #8. Too many just flat out better players likely will be there to let need dictate the 8 like that IMO.

Tony Pauline: Panthers sleeper team to trade for Sam Darnold
CRA replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yep. Or unless we see more action like the 49ers and we can lock in more QBs with teams ahead of us -
Atlanta really worries me. I could easily see them trading back for a QB hungry team. And they aren't letting us into that spot. Acquire picks, screw the divisional rival that is painfully desperate for a QB, etc.
-
That's Mike's type. Kyle's type seems to be in the Kirk Cousins type. Tried to get Cousins to SF via trade. Jimmy G is that type guy and did get him. . Mac Jones is that type guy. Prior to SF he had success with Matt Ryan.
-
Wilson went into this season not even being assured he would be the starter....because his 2019 wasn't good. That's part of his body of work too. They played some really bad competition this year. And this basically is his defining body of work. A lot of his plays IMO never would have happened vs better competition because better athletes would have made him pay for it. Think they beat 3 teams with winning records. And that includes folks like the USTA Roadrunners being one of them. I definitely think he is is a promising QB. Plenty to like. But he got folks claiming he is even better than Lawrence. Nothing back ups this weird Wilson movement IMO.
-
Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance and Mac Jones have question marks too.
-
So which QBs would you rank Lance ahead of.....if the question is ONLY who can operate Joe Brady's pass scheme the best in 2021? Like I said, I got two separate list. The Brady one and the Rhule. And I'm not saying I agree with either I project onto them either. My ranking remains. Trevor Fields Wilson/Lance Mac Jones

What was the boldest move this franchise has made?
CRA replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
Boldest move: Attempting to sell to fans that being naturally left handed matters -
1 Absoulte Certainty: No Teddy 2021 (That is all at this point)
CRA replied to davos's topic in Carolina Panthers
If I had to bet my money, Teddy trots out there week 1. -
Development is part of it. Like I said, he is IMO the most difficult for Joe Brady to just plug into what he is doing. Joe Brady and Rhule got different goals. Brady is trying to advance. Rhule is focused on building something here (with or without Brady). and Lance for all his talent is not a very accurate passer. Doubtful he will become that anytime soon as he takes a massive jump in competition. Windows get even smaller. I still think Joe Brady is looking to move on sooner rather than later.
