I'm cool with feeding CMC. But it is conditional. I want the contract he is on to be his last in Carolina. And that probably holds true if we over feed him or not.

sure it is. It’s commonly talked about in football/sports. Players being set up to fail within an organization. Which in that context, literal intentional sabatoge of the player is not what is implied. and you can find more posts, articles, etc than one would care to read about Sam Darnold being setup to fail in NY.
-
Sam Darnold couldn’t do it. Year after year after year. or are you going to tell be how Jets set him up to fail and all he needs is a new coach to work out and fix all the issues the last franchise helped create? Because the talent is all there. and I’m talking about Joey Slye the kicker. But all you see is someone might be slighting the golden child Matt Rhule in the process of talking about what could of happened with Syle…..
-
You have the ability to choose how you want interpret anything you read on the internet. And some are way too over protective of Matt Rhule. I simply think in hindsight, with a kicker that got in his own head…..we probably shouldn’t of kept asking Joey to do the impossible so routinely. Throw the Hail Mary. It has better odds. We treated Joey as the best odds. In the end you got a kicker taking the L….because you gotta think every time Syle believed he should of made it.

Coaches set guys up to fail all the time. I didn’t say it was intentional and they planned it out that way. Was Darnold set up to fail by NY? Was it deliberate? We continuously asked Joey Slye to go make 65+ kicks to win and tie games. I doubt that trotting him out there to miss helped him….especially now in hindsight. You see more Hail Marys actually work than you do 65+ yarders go down. See plenty Hail Marys work every season. But we deemed Syle the best option. Eventually those don’t just become for shits and giggles when your team keeps going to you…to win/tie it late.
-
They still count as misses. and like I said if you consistently keep asking him to make circus kicks to win games or tie them late (which we did both) …..I would think there begins to be an expectation that he will then make some of them that starts to sink in. Kicking is a head game. I don’t mind the rare circus kick for fun. I think we started doing it too much.
-
I actually think consistently trotting him out there for 65+ yard FGs was our own staff setting him up for failure. If they keep putting you out there for circus kicks….we’ll the expectation is you eventually have to be the freak. But it’s just putting you out there to take Ls.

you get put on the shelf for 5 days if vaccinated. Key is not to be an exposure after Tuesday.

What was the explanation for punting on the Jets 33 yard line?

Darin Gantt claimed in the mailbag the team thought his max was about 53. -

I’m pretty sure Matt Rhule and company simply went into the season with a guy they didn’t and had no reason to trust…..so they punted. I like a good football conspiracy theory. But even I’m not buying it was all to set up a fake punt from the 33 later. -
He has a worse overall % than Syle…and spent all last season choking on kicks in the 4th q. I’d rather have a rookie. A rookie kicker would deserve blind optimism. This is just a bad overall kicker. Rhule should of just kept Syle.

Well, the real problem….is Rhule going into the season with a guy that had shown for a half decade he wasn’t a NFL FG kicker. Just a very bad kickoff specialist. hard to champion Rhule for a problem of his own creation. -
https://www.google.com/amp/s/arizonasports.com/story/2464947/zane-gonzalez-crunch-time-missed-kicks-a-trend-for-arizona-cardinals/amp/ here is an article on Zane from last season….killing the chances of the Cardinals winning games. Over and over. I’d still rather have Slye than any of these downgrades. Not that I was opposed to moving on from Syle. But you got to get better if you move on from someone.

My position is the same as the day we brought in Santoso. either get a legit leg and if one isn’t available…..bring in some young rookie to gamble on. No point bringing in dysfunctional kickers that have already proven they aren’t actually good enough. We aren’t in win now mode. Might as well actually be trying out guys with potential to be actual answers

Yep -
Not good either. At least of late. He kicked for AZ last year. Had a lot of struggles with late game kicks.

and Rhule just cut the kicker. Because no one wants to punt on the 33. -

4 yards longer when you are over 50....starts to really matter. but again, Nick Folk was injured all preseason and they just elevated from the practice squad I think the day before the game. Hard to skip over that aspect. -
I've always broken down passing at 3 levels.... 10 and less, 10-20, and 20+. Toughest place to play is 10-20 IMO. That's where NFL QBs are made IMO.

History, says, if we are playing conservative football, sitting on a lead, and playing to the defense....that is Matt Rhule. That's how he made his name and got to the NFL. Putting it on the defense.

should of been 50 on the nose. -

NE's kicker nursed an injury all preseason and only attempted one kick....and they elevated him from the practice squad to kick at the last minute. And his kick would have been longer. -
yep, people overemphasize him moving on from Teddy and ignore the examples you listed. Teddy poo'd on them publicly. I'm not convinced Teddy wouldn't be here today if his play was what it was....and he acted like Joey Slye.

PFF grades way different than the viewer. We just look at passing completed and tune out the rest. So he can rack up negative plays against the run or plays where the QB didn't make the throw. But regardless, for a rookie DB in his first game with barely any preseason..that was more than good enough for Horn.
