22 of his 24 completions were 10 yards or less downfield week 1. I believe 18 of his 19 preseason completions were 10 yards or less downfield and all camp reporters were asking Rhule about Darnold checking down with such a high level consistency that’s a pretty consistent trend to date and has to be coaching. And it’s checking down a greater rate than Teddy because he was always able to work in the 10-20 yard intermediate plays. and if you call that making plays downfield….then you can’t call Teddy a Checkdown player. Because Teddy pushes the ball down the field more than that. and again, maybe that is the right call with Sam. But IMO this staff has handled Sam like damaged goods. Which he is. But it’s also why I temper expectations for him.

We haven’t seen that yet though here. From camp to preseason to week 1….he overall just checking down and playing with 10 yards. Got to think it is instruction at this point. and maybe that is the right call with a project like Sam. But I still feel people are inventing him into something he isn’t yet…and then rewriting Teddy’s time as a Jimmy Clausen. Darnold was more aggressive in NY. But he also made a lot of bondheaded decisions while being such. I still think early plan is having him play like Teddy. Then Rhule can do what he has always done. Try to win with D and just smart O. We would have won more last year with Teddy checking down to CMC all game.

Yes, today. Monday presser. Which was the tweet. He went and watched the tape. It was Sam’s fault. his gut take was to shield Sam. Which he did post game. But tape didn’t lie and everyone saw it. Commentators even called it. So he said he was Sam’s fault but placed the real blame on the coaches for not practicing it enough….despite saying they ran it all the time the day prior.

Ok, Tom Brady couldn't make that throw. PJ Walker could. That's where you are focusing the convo. And it's not like Sam was throwing it on a rope. But yeah, he doesn't have more arm ability. the original point was THAT opportunity is the one Teddy would take. He did in the clip. Darnold has spent his time to date overwhelming checking down. Frankly, at a greater degree than Teddy started. Camp, preseason, and now week 1. That's the conversation I am having. It looks like he is being deliberately coached into being a checkdown QB. The intermediate routes is my focus. Not 20+.

it's basically a clone of the same play. This one went for 74. as I said, that was the exact type deep shot Teddy would take. The wide open one.

Rhule also seems to be finally acknowledging that big fumble on the exchange was on Sam too.

yeah, see, I just can't get down with stuff like that. QB has been significantly upgraded? I mean, we can't actually declare that.

ok, was merely showing why a reporter noted Wilson's 2nd half as successful. Considering someone else was shocked by the comment. They played a good 2nd half. We played a better 1st half.

you don't need crazy time to attack 10-20 yards downfield. We didn't complete one Sunday. I think Sam had 1 in the preseason. And reports out of camp were repeatedly that Sam was going short and it stuck out. I would assume Sam is just being coached to do that for the time being. That was Teddy's DNA.

I mean, Teddy hit them too when they were as wide open as Robbie was. That was the only time he pulled the trigger deep. you have to be able to attack at the intermediate level. The offense failed to complete a pass there the entire game. It was largely just attacking within 10 yard downfield. From a passing attack perspective, it was very similar to Teddy IMO. Which is fine week 1 for Sam. But we will have to get better. Especially vs better teams. Especially the 10-20 range downfield. Which we haven't shown yet in preseason or week 1 we can really do that. The intermediate throws will be what makes or breaks it for Darnold IMO. That's where it gets hard for him.

I still think Sam is playing pretty similar to Teddy. I think that is the plan. Overall, in preseason and week 1 is basically playing with just about 10 yards of field. I would expect that to continue. The offense I don't think completed a single intermediate pass. 10-20 yards downfield. He did hit Robby deep...but that was the type deep play Teddy would randomly hit too. Where the WR was just so wide open he would take it. Then that one crazy DJ toe tap play.

statistically, the Jets outplayed us in the 2nd half. 173 total yards, 2 TDs 82 total yards, FG

Clemson lost to UGA 10-3. Defining play of that loss and biggest play of the game was the INT returned for the TD. That was the game. That singular play. Whose fault was that? Well, per Dabo, it is all the WRs fault. Which isn't true. But that is the narrative Dabo wanted. He doesn't want his brand new QB shouldering that yet. I suspect you are seeing a similar element here. Both share blame. Rhule wants to keep it all off Darnold.

unless you got weird rules....it was a top 5 play this week.

I'm not making any judgements off the Jets game. If you had average defensive talent....your defense should of shined yesterday. Horrible OL, rookie QB in his first start. We won't really have a clue about this defense until starting with the Saints game.
-
Punters don't really get a lot of practice trying to pin an opponent back.....by punting from the opponents 33. That's not what punters actually do in the NFL.
-
It’s a QB driven league and we had two high end prospects fall in our laps. you really got an issue with people thinking a team allegedly in rebuild mode should draft….a QB? .
-
Not sure we know we can shut down the run just yet…..Jets have a bad OL and weaker than average RBs. Kamara is as close to a CMC type threat as their gets
-
Everyone has input. My boss asks for input all the time. He gets all kinds of input. You can’t follow everyone’s input. Because it generally is wildly different. Joe Brady isn’t drafting guys and adding free agents. You think Joe Brady that first draft was like, nah….I don’t want anyone in this entire draft lol. Let’s spend all the first round picks on D. I’m good. Matt Rhule has always leaned and won via defense and Snow is his dude. Don’t forget, the Sam input came from Phil Snow. Phil Snow was impressed with Sam and Rhule then began to pursue him because of Snow’s input.
-
Well, it depends on which Winston shows up. Good Winston? I don’t think we can score enough points. They are stout up front. They will cause our OL and Sam much bigger problems. Bad Winston? We would have have a chance.
-
Shaq and CMC honorable mentions to Burns and Brown on D. Sam on O.
-
Can’t really hate on him for the 2nd TD. Good throw. Good catch. Solid coverage. We will get our first real look at Horn this upcoming week. Jets had a rookie QB and a bad OL. Winston and the Saints will actually attack our D. It will show us a lot about the D overall and where we stack up.

We can’t go into next week with Santoso right? RIGHT?
CRA replied to TheBigKat's topic in Carolina Panthers
33 would make it a 49 yard attempt. with no crazy wind, weather, or blocking concerns upfront showing themselves early in the game. and yeah, if you can’t attempt a 49 yarder….you need a new kicker. Especially when you aren’t an offensive juggernaut. You miss the opponent is only starting on their own 33. -

Rhule showed you with his actions. Again, he punted from the Jets 33. Actions speak louder than bullshit behind a podium.
