Who would you rank as top 5 Panther draft busts of all time?
CRA replied to TheBigKat's topic in Carolina Panthers
All comes down to if injuries and off the field issues exclude people or not. You can do it two ways. Was the franchise able to identify talent or not? Or did the pick itself work or not. Horn, Otah, Timmah could be or not be on a bust list. We identified talent. The picks did not work out in the end (Horn still pending). Collins gets in a little bit of a gray area too with his booze. He finished with like a 17 year career, Pro Bowls with 2 different teams, comeback player of the year twice. -
Biakubutuka and Collins are in play. Timmah was a #8 and Collins a #5.

Heck, we should of kept Gilmore.

I mean, this frankly sounds like something Matt Rhule spews out. Bijan Robinson also broke the rules of running on that TD. He wasn't supposed to juke people out. If he would have just run freaking straight the guys would have made the play. The Falcons D was playing to jump the routes over the middle because they believed that is what Frank/Bryce would be doing. That's football. And it's frankly predictable. Most knew and projected going in Frank/Bryce would keep it short and in front of the safeties. That's not breaking the rules. That's just good defense.
-
that's largely true for Bama and UGA too. Those 3 schools have consistently fielded the best rosters in college football. Especially talking about pre NIL. This NIL likely will start to skew that from being so true going forward.
-
problem with Laviska in the backfield, is it surely has to limit your audible and protections that potentially could be available on a given play. I felt strongly Bryce needed a really good 3rd down type RB going into this season. Not a super stud. Just someone that can do it all at a reliable level in those pass looks. And that's just not about catching the ball. Sanders and Hubbard are fine rushers. Laviska is a fine gadget guy. If you are living in the shotgun in pass scenarios w/ a rookie QB.....you need one more RB IMO that isn't on the roster presently. And that is Cohen. If he can still play. Which is a question.

Don't call me Teddy, not fit to The picture kept will remind me Don't call me Teddy, not fit to be The picture kept will remind me

That's the problem with not having enough talent. You got Laviska out there and you have to ask him to do things he can't do. Because every play can't be a schemed up play for him when he is on the field or then they don't work.

It’s also hard though to point at a QB and see him flounder somewhere and argue the same things occurs if he went to the 31 other spots. Situations, cast, coaching and landing spots makes or breaks careers. I don’t think Cam Newton would have been rookie of the year with the 31 other teams. We had 2 pro bowlers in the backfield, multiple pro bowl linemen, 2 stud TEs, and a HOF WR….AND were willing to adopt the college read option and normalize it for Cam. All that contributed to his early success. I think same guy could of been really bad on a weak team that wanted him to be traditional.
-
I definitely think Hurts is a different tier QB But it’s hard to ignore the difference the likely best OL in the league and likely one of the the worst if not THE worst has on the QB play. Not to mention development. Because Hurts has made huge growth and development behind that OL.
-
It never started. Hubbard and Shenault primarily occupied the job Sunday. And Shenault is a pure gadget guy so it probably limits the audibles/protections you might need to get into with him in the backfield.
-
We could use a legit receiving RB. Because that’s what is going to be called for a lot this season. Which is something they should have addressed earlier…..instead of after the season started. Because that simply was a hole on the roster. Just because Chubba and Sanders logged receptions or a play worked doesn’t make them good receiving RBs to date and that’s Cohen’s speciality. But it’s a bit of desperate play by Carolina given his recent history.

We don’t have a good team around Young on offense. A rookie Young isn’t suppose to make this current cast look good. Tom Brady wasn’t always prime Brady. There was an evolution throughout his career in regards to what he could do and how that team relied upon him.
-
Also, worth noting if you want to scrutinize his completion %…..Young had 8 throwaways. Only 1 QB has had more in a game since 2006. Bryce Young is a point guard distributor. If you got a problem with Young…..you really don’t. You got a problem with the folks around him.
-
risk adverse point guard type. it’s like the gunslinger tier. It’s a wide range of QBs and they aren’t created equal. Good and bad variety. but Bryce Young will need weapons in the NFL. Simple as that. And he has really nothing. And you want him to be able to finish drives and come in during clutch time. But yeah, there are definitely some similarities in style of QB. if you got bland offensive skill talent you need a playmaker QB. That’s a Cam. Nothing wrong with a risk adverse point guard. You just want Bryce to be the high end version, which wasn’t Teddy. People hear point guard and think Steph Curry. Steph is a playmaker. Think more John Stockton.
-
I mean there are similar aspects to Teddy’s game. That’s just a reality. Teddy was a first rounder too with his skill set.
-
Young was robbed of game speed reps and work with his WRs that he doesn’t know. Camp is camp. Practice is practice. Real action of preseason is valuable for many players. Specifically, rookie QBs. And Young got some of the lightest work I can recall any rookie getting that actually was heathy. Everyone out snapped him. plus, Frank’s play calling is just weak. A continuing theme across the board. Indy to his first half calling vs Thomas’ 2nd, to this game. Frank doesn’t need the call sheet in his hands. He never does anyone any favors. Old school coach needs to focus on being a HC. Let the green OC grow with Young.
-
He is a rookie QB, in his first start on the road, with meh skill talent....and barely played in the preseason. And we asked him to pass nearly 40 times. it wasn't supposed to be good given that. Frank should of played him like a rookie. Not like a starting QB in the preseason. Cam got real preseason work.

it becomes a pointless and wasted season.

Some positive and critical thoughts on yesterdays game
CRA replied to Saca312's topic in Carolina Panthers
roughly half the board was tempering things. There have always been essentially two groups Group A - we have an all star staff and should compete for a playoff spot crowd. That starts most convos off with a game away last year and we just add on to that narrative. Group B - this is a rebuild, rookie QB, new coaches, new schemes, meh skill talent on O and you shouldn't expect much winning this year crowd. It's about developing Bryce and how he looks down the stretch. -
Dalton isn't better than Wilson at this stage.
-
I always thought we picked Horn because Fitt was our GM and he was the most similar to the LOB DBs. Which was the foundation of the success of the franchise he came from.
-
I'm critical of the DJ Johnson for lots of reasons. Not just because he didn't play a snap. Which was all discussed at the time. Washington at least played. And did good things. Like that clip showed. Which is impressive given the tall task. Oh, I am definitely biased here. I hated the pick. Still hate it. Better gambling could of been done elsewhere. Especially given we drafted Young and his weak weapons.
-
and I don't care what Horn does this year or next. They should let Horn walk. Great player. But you just can't pay him given his history.
