  1. Baker Mayfield: Top landing spots for the former Browns QB now that the Panthers have released him 192 Jeff Risdon Mon, December 5, 2022 at 12:29 PM·4 min read The ongoing dramatic saga surrounding Baker Mayfield keeps rolling right along. Mayfield is once again out of work after the Carolina Panthers released the former Browns quarterback on Monday morning. Carolina is the second NFL franchise to dump Mayfield in the last six months, following the Browns’ lead. Despite two teams with losing records giving up on Mayfield in such a short period of time, there will be some teams interested in Cleveland’s starting QB from 2018-2021. Houston Texans Browns fans know very well how badly the Texans need a new quarterback. Houston benched second-year QB Davis Mills to watch Kyle Allen turn the ball over four times, including a pick-six to Browns LB Tony Fields, in Sunday’s win by Cleveland. Both Mills and Allen have prove they are not the long-term solution in Houston, which holds the NFL’s worst record at 1-10-1- Mayfield might not be the long-term solution either for Houston, but he’s at least got competence and experience on his side. Those can help the Texans better evaluate the rest of the offensive roster, including young WRs Nico Collins and Amari Rodgers and TE Teagan Quitoriano. Los Angeles Rams No, that’s not Matthew Stafford being sacked there. It’s new Rams starter John Wolford, who took over when the Rams placed Stafford on injured reserve last week after suffering numbness in his toes following a concussion. Wolford and Bryce Perkins are suited to be No. 3 QBs, not the primary backup. And now that the backup will be starting for at least the remainder of 2022, it’s time for the Rams and head coach Sean McVay to find someone better than what they’ve got. In theory, Mayfield could make a nice eventual replacement for Stafford and insurance in case the Super Bowl champion retires soon. The Rams did have interest in Mayfield in the 2018 NFL draft despite having 2016 No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff (now in Detroit) leading them to a Super Bowl berth. This one would be fun just to watch the bombastic, dynamic personalities of McVay and Mayfield work together, even for just six weeks. The cap-strapped Rams can’t really afford to claim Mayfield, but that hasn’t stopped them before. San Francisco 49ers San Francisco is cruising right along with an outstanding defense, but the 49ers lost their starting quarterback on Sunday. Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot in the win over the Dolphins and will miss the rest of the season. The 49ers primary backup, Trey Lance, is also out for the season. That leaves the 8-4 49ers poised to effort a playoff run with Brock Purdy at the controls. Purdy is this year’s Mr. Irrelevant, the last player selected in the 2022 NFL draft. The Niners quickly signed journeyman Josh Johnson as a backup. Johnson is smart and mobile, but he’s won exactly one start in his 14-year NFL career and has tossed more INTs than TDs. Mayfield has some familiarity with the Kyle Shanahan style of offense and playoff experience, which could coax a claim from the NFC West leaders. Minnesota Vikings The Vikings are 10-2 in the first year under head coach Kevin O’Connell. That man seated to O’Connell’s right is Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Yeah, former Browns VP of Football Operations from 2020-2021 Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Kirk Cousins is playing very well as the Vikings starter. Behind Cousins is another familiar name for Browns fans, Nick Mullens. It was Mullens who started for Cleveland for an injured Mayfield in the Week 15 loss to the Raiders a year ago. He’s acceptable in mop-up or spot duty for Cousins, but if the starter gets hurt in Minnesota, it’s easy to see that contending team wanting more than acceptable. Mayfield has proven that he can, in fact, be a lot more than acceptable. At times. Adofo-Mensah witnessed those times firsthand, though he also happened to see Mayfield at his worst. It seems far-fetched, but this wacky QB season has proven anything can happen in the NFL.
  2. I am not sure i would take the same approach he did but at least the players can respect the fact he is laying his cards on the table and giving then a choice to chose their own destination.
  3. This is some long sighted thinking but if Deion Sanders has continued success coaching in college and serves a year or two in the NFL as an asst. coach, I could see him eventually win a head coaching job. Deion is someone players look up to and has a sort of personality that rubs off on a team he's connected with.
  4. You don't have to put in a backup QB to prove Wilson is trash all you have to do is watch his past and present performaces this year.
  5. It would be hard and somewhat unfair to evaluate any QB correctly that had to play behind the horrible offensive line the Panthers had prior to this year,
  6. Mayfield finished his Panthers tenure with career-lows in completion percentage (57.8 percent), yards per game (187.6) and only six touchdowns with six interceptions.
  7. How the Panthers finish the seasons ending next five games will probably determine the fate of both Wilks and Darnold.
  8. Your assumption could very well be correct. The waiver wire order is set by reverse league standings after Monday Night Football. With the 49ers at 8-4 and in first place in the NFC West, all but four teams will have a chance at claiming Mayfield before they could. Any team that claims Mayfield would owe him a prorated $1.3 million.
  9. I can vision the Panthers winning a couple of more games and finishing 6-11. I know this would be a long shot but if QB Sam Darnold can becomes a flop that fliped and starts show casing the talent he had in college, my opinion will go out the window.
  10. If the Denver Broncos released Russell Wilson this season, they would be left with $124 million in dead money. They would incur $107 million in dead money if he were released in 2023 and $85 million if he were released in 2024. The Broncos can't save cap space by releasing Wilson until 2025 when he no longer has a guaranteed salary.
  11. I will be pulling for UNC to beat Clemson and hope QB Drake Maye can light up that tough Clemson defense. However, the betting spead has Clemson a 7.5 favorite, so UNC will have their work cut out for them if they want to pull the upset.
  12. Reading that Observer article brought back many fond memories of Salt and Pepper when they played togeather in the bygone days of 1996 and 1997. The articles content also gave me a feeling of sadness because those times I enjoyed then have have long passed, just like Sam Mills and Kevin Greene. I hated the fact that by 1998 Lathons NFL career was cut short by repeated injuries and sadly he never had a season anything like his Pro Bowl year of 1996 again.
  13. I wouldn't say I called Rhule a fraud from the very first day that he was announced as the Panthers head coach, but bad past experiences of NFL teams hiring college coaches, led me to believe at the time he wouldn't be a good long term fit for the team.
  14. Both Young and Stroud will probably be gone when the Panthers select in the 2023 draft in rd. 1, so i would like to see them take the best player available and take a chance on Florida QB Anthony Richardson if he is there in the 2nd rd.. Richardson has a lot of untapped talent and may have more upside than any QB in the draft, if given time to develop by good coaching.
  15. If you are going to apologize to your wife over a matter, please do it in private, not over Instagram.
  16. With the issues Brown has he can be a danger to others as well as himself. So sad.
  17. Don’t look now, but the Panthers have allowed just 38 points in the last three weeks. They have to clear up the quarterback position but there’s a promising foundation to be excited about for the near future, especially on defense. Considering the adverse circumstances of Matt Rhule’s midseason firing, interim head coach Steve Wilks is doing a very good job. In my opinion, Wilks could be coaching his way into the full time, head coach position.
  18. This Fox News Sports article sums this up very nicely; https://www.foxnews.com/sports/panthers-ceo-david-tepper-investigated-failed-training-facility-south-carolina
  19. I am not saying you are wrong about the fans take on Clark Hunt in KC but it would be hard to find any NFL fanbase that didn't have certain people that were critical of the team owner.
  20. Plus, taking real grass off the playing field at the stadium and replacing it with turf that the players hate and say causes injuries.
  21. I feel sure Sean Payton wants nothing to do with the Panthers and I want the Panthers to have nothing to do with Sean Payton.
  22. I read in an article that the Panthers will wind up having to pay Rhule around $ 6 million because a lot of the money in his new contract was back loaded.
