  1. Adjusting to the new scheme quickly will be key for Sam Darnold. Patience hasn’t been part of the approach at the quarterback position for the Panthers and Darnold doesn’t have the benefit of experience in a similar offense like Teddy Bridgewater did last year.
  2. I have listened to a lot of those Carolina Panthers football games on radio over the years, and I still remember back to the days when the Panthers’ radio announcing team was Bill Rosinski, Roman Gabriel and Jim Szoke…. Then after Bill Rosinski wanted a ring when the Panthers went to Super Bowl XXXVIII, and the Panthers would not fess up for Rosinski, and when the Panthers heard Bill Rosinski was complaining, they let him go…. Mick Mixon was brought in as the lead Panthers play-by-play man, and he was teamed up with Eugene Robinson and Jim Szoke…..
  3. Per Alaina Getzenberg of the Charlotte Observer, only two players on Carolina’s 90-man roster were not on the field for Wednesday’s practice: wide receiver Robby Anderson and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones. Wide receiver DJ Moore said Wednesday that getting so many players to attend the voluntary workouts was important “because we are one of the youngest teams in the league.”
  4. Great idea. Let's hope it plays out that way.
  5. I think it is wise that the Panthers are preparing to move Chinn from linebacker to safety, a move that should extend his playing career as well as making that position stronger in regards to coverage and tackling.
  6. Rick Bonnell R.I.P.. It was covering the Hornets and the NBA at large where Rick Bonnell made his biggest mark. He was also known as a leader among beat writers who covered the league, Bonnell served a term as president of the Professional Basketball Writers Association from 2007-09.
  7. Kofi Cockburn 7'0' 285lbs is one big dude.
  8. Just because Christensen played left tackle throughout his career at BYU does not mean he will start there, especially to begin with for the Panthers. It was his explosive pro day numbers that helped attract the Panthers. At 6-foot-6, 300-pounds, Christensen is an athletic lineman. He posted a 10-foot-4-inch vertical jump, a 4.89 seconds 40-yard dash and a 34-inch vertical leap. His vertical jump was the best recorded by an offensive lineman among available NFL Scouting Combine records. Christensen was also the highest graded tackle in a season ever by PFF (96.0).
  9. Or the Panthers could do just the opposite, play him inside this year, given him experience, building his confidence, then move him to LT next year.
  10. One more of the numerous screw ups we can chalk up to Marty Hurney.
  11. I am feeling like Paquette is going to bring tonight.....
  12. What is the NFL fifth-year option? Players who are selected in the first round of the NFL Draft sign four-year rookie contracts with a team option for a fifth year built into the pact. Teams must decide on to pick of a player's fifth-year option following the end of the player's third season but before May 3 of the following league year. The option formula, which has been changed for players in the 2018 draft class due to CBA changes, takes into account prior performance, cap situation, Pro Bowl appearances, position salaries and snap count. The fifth-year option is guaranteed and also guarantees the fourth-year option base salary. Even if a fifth-year option is not exercised, players have the opportunity to negotiate long-term extensions with their team throughout the 2021 season before hitting free agency.
  13. I thought the Panthers made a wise decision to release Boston after he had a down season by his previous standards, particularly struggling in coverage on the back end of the defense. Boston had allowed a career-high 69.2 reception percent for 319 yards and three TDs, per Pro Football Focus.
  14. Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer has had an impressive first offseason. He got high marks for both his work in free agency and during the 2021 NFL draft, and rightfully so. However, no executive is perfect and he has made a couple of questionable moves, as well. The biggest to follow in the coming years will be whether or not it was the right call to pass on Justin Fields in the draft – regardless of how well Jaycee Horn plays corner. On a far smaller scale, Fitterer’s decision to cut free safety Tre Boston a couple months ago was also iffy. That move becomes official today (June 1), which will save the team roughly $3.5 million in salary cap space for 2021. While it’s nice to get that extra chunk of change, the price of forfeiting the best (and only) true free safety on the roster just wasn’t worth it. Even with a gaping hole at this critical position, it’s gone pretty much entirely unaddressed this offseason until very recently. After ignoring a deep market of veterans, the Panthers completely passed on what was considered a strong class of safeties in the draft, leading to questions about who will replace Boston in the starting lineup. At the moment, our best wild guess is that it will be Lano Hill, who signed a couple weeks ago after playing the first few years of his career in Seattle. The Seahawks picked him in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft but he never saw much playing time. Hill started just six of 42 games and saw his snap count shrink every year. Worse, injuries have cost him 18 games over the last two seasons. Hill should be considered unproven as far as potentially taking over Boston’s former role. Other options on the roster include Juston Burris and Jeremy Chinn, neither of whom are particularly well-suited to play the centerfield spot in what’s been a heavy cover 3 scheme from defensive coordinator Phil Snow so far. For what it’s worth, Earl Thomas is still out there.
  15. It will not only be Burns, the Panthers have multiple players who can get to the point of attack quickly and considering the improvements made to their secondary in recent weeks, the front seven should get more time to do the expected damage.
  16. I believe the Bears bring Fields along slowly and go with Andy Dalton for awhile. Starting Fields in the season opener would mean his first NFL game would be against Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey and the fearsome entity known as the L.A. Rams defense, which was the top-ranked defense in 2020.
  17. You had my attention until i read down to ( "Justin Fields 400 yards 4 tds 3 rushing tds" ) Gotta love your sense of humor.
  18. The Panthers 2021 NFL season will kick off with some high drama as the Jets travel to Bank of America Stadium to face our new QB Sam Darnold and our own Carolina Panthers in Week 1,barring something weird happening. I am expecting Darnold to give it his best shot and show the Jets they made a huge mistake giving up on on him, instead of placing a cast of good players and coaches around him.
  19. https://www.yahoo.com/.../jets-rookie-zach-wilson... Jets rookie Zach Wilson compliments Sam Darnold, calls Panthers ‘a great team’ The Panthers kick off their regular season against the Jets in September. Together, these teams only won seven games last year, but there’s a lot of interesting storylines here. The NFL clearly thought so when they scheduled their Week 1 matchup. Quarterbacks will dominate the discussion after both sides made seismic changes this offseason to the most important position on the field. New York traded their QB1 Sam Darnold to Carolina for three picks, then used their first-rounder on Zach Wilson, who should start right away. Asked about a showdown with the Jets’ former franchise QB, Wilson had nothing but nice things to say about both Darnold and the Panthers, per News12. “I’ve talked to Sam before, he’s a great guy, but it’s not like I’m so pumped because it’s Sam. I’m excited because the Panthers are a great team, and it’s a great challenge for us. It has nothing to do with him. He’s a great player and he’s going to handle his own. It has nothing to do with the fact that he was here in New York, and now he’s there. I’m happy for him.” Well, buttering up your opponents is certainly smarter than giving them bulletin board material. Credit Wilson for knowing that much. Expectations for Wilson will be high after he was taken with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. On film, Wilson has a ludicrous arm and moves as well as anyone can expect from a modern dual-threat QB. Adjusting to the speed of the pro game can be brutal even for top prospects, though. If Wilson needs any proof he can ask Darnold, who threw a pick-six on his first pass in the NFL. As for the defense Wilson will be facing, the Panthers might have a potentially nasty pass rush led by Brian Burns and boosted by the acquisition of Haason Reddick. At middle linebacker, Denzel Perryman will be calling the shots – a superb upgrade over former starter Tahir Whitehead. Meanwhile, Jeremy Chinn will be roaming around all three levels. On the back end, the Panthers lost free safety Tre Boston but added a host of long cornerbacks who should radically improve their ability to play more man.
  20. Jeremy Chinn had a great rookie season and should have had more consideration for defensive rookie of the year. That said, it seems like the Panthers would like to play him more in the box but they don't have much depth at either safety spot nor is there anyone reliable enough to make that move more permanent for Chinn. Juston Burris, Sam Franklin, Myles Hartsfield, and Kenny Robinson are all good role players but there are better options on the market. Bringing in another safety would be a huge help for not only Chinn but the defense as a whole.
  21. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/positions-carolina-panthers-improved-most-123522234.html The Panthers will resume their OTA workouts tomorrow, taking the next step towards the 2021 season. June 1 is a significant date on the NFL calendar for a number of reasons, so now’s a good time to reflect on where the team is heading into the summer months. For Carolina, this offseason has been all about upgrading a young roster with an eye on fundamentally changing how they can play defense. Here is a look at the three positions that the Panthers have improved most since last season. Cornerback Lost: Rasul Douglas, Corn Elder Gained: Jaycee Horn, Keith Taylor, Rashaan Melvin, A.J. Bouye Clearly, the No. 1 priority on general manager Scott Fitterer’s list was upgrading what was an unreliable cornerback room in 2020. No longer having Elder at nickel may sting, but only if they don’t use their personnel right. After investing significant resources at the position, there’s more than enough firepower to go around, here. In free agency, the Panthers picked up Bouye and Melvin – two solid veterans who may be past their prime but came on cheap, short-term deals. In the draft, Carolina added two rookies with Horn and Taylor – both long, physical, lanky Seattle type corners who can press. If the plan is to start Horn and Bouye outside and slide Donte Jackson inside to cover the slot there’s a real chance this cornerback group could go from liability to strength. Putting that group out there together should enable defensive coordinator Phil Snow to be far more aggressive using man coverage following a zone-heavy 2020 campaign. Linebacker Lost: Tahir Whitehead, Adarius Taylor Gained: Denzel Perryman, Haason Reddick, Frankie Luvu, Paddy Fisher Another spot that got a nice boost was linebacker – both the inside and outside versions. Going from Whitehead as the starting Mike to Perryman might be the single-most impactful move the team makes this year defensively. At the very least, Perryman is a far more efficient tackler and light years ahead in coverage. If things don’t work out with Perryman or he gets injured again, they still have an excellent backup in Jermaine Carter. Outside, the Panthers helped their pass rush by signing Reddick – who posted 12.5 sacks and 16 QB hits last season after moving out to the edge in Arizona. If he comes anywhere close to repeating those numbers, the one-year, $6 milllion deal he signed for will be a steal. Tight end Lost: Chris Manhertz Gained: Dan Arnold, Tommy Tremble Offensively, the Panthers made huge changes at quarterback, left tackle and wide receiver, but it remains to be seen if those moves have actually made them better. That said, on paper it’s pretty clear that Carolina is deeper at tight end compared to last year. Manhertz may be one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL. However, he’ll turn 30 in a couple weeks and most likely won’t be effective much longer. The Panthers should get an effective replacement with Tremble, who has been dubbed the best blocking tight end in college football. If he lives up to that billing, Manhertz won’t be missed. Like the Reddick acquisition, signing Arnold for two years and $6 million could be another significant under-the-radar steal in free agency. Arnold posted four touchdowns and 438 yards for the Cards last year. Similar production would be a step up compared to what the Panthers have gotten from this spot since Greg Olsen’s foot injuries began in 2017.
  22. I gave you a couple of pies that should balance out the ill mannered poo.
  23. The fact that Steve Smith, who is not known to freely hand out compliments, raved on about about DJ's skill set and high potential upside was enough to win me over and sell me on DJ.
  24. "If he avoids mistakes and takes advantage of a far-superior receiver corps, Panthers QB Sam Darnold has a chance to go from being a fringe starter to a top-15 QB". I think all of us can agree that we will be pulling for Sam Darnold to show he is the type of elite NFL QB the Panthers need become a play off caliber team.
  25. After catching a couple of passes in his late-season cameo, TE Dan Arnold made a huge leap last season, with 31 catches for 438 yards (14.1 yards per catch), and four touchdowns.
