PFF - What would it take for Panthers to trade up for #1 pick
stan786 replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah that’s what I was going to say it’s not like Free Agents aren’t looking at the Jets. Also a decent number of failed QBs have still gotten picks back if you cut bait early enough. Wentz got a 1, Darnold got a 2, Rosen got a 2. Just depends on the situation really. Even a failed QB may not be end of the world really. -

Yeah end of the day I think I agree with Person here if we do draft a guy I think 5 probably is where we end up and we’ll get the third QB off the board. Which I think is probably going to be alright with the FO because I anticipate they are going to have Levis near the top of that Group. We could save our future firsts that way as well probably. My one curiosity is how do we feel about Young’s size, he very easily could tumble to 5 because of it. Really any of those 3 could be there at 5 depending on the next month or two. I’d be a little surprised if Gannon trades out of the chance to add an Anderson to his team, especially with his style of defense that needs a serious pass rush from the DLine. But maybe the Eagles system has left an impression on him. -
I believe his contract has options for new teams to convert a large % of that salary to bonus so he wouldn’t necessarily be a pain to fit in this year if you added a few years on to the deal with void years, but if he retires after a season then it would be crippling. It’s an interesting structure I think it was over the cap that did a nice breakdown.

I totally agree, depends on staff evaluations but if they feel a guy is far and away better than the rest and they trade up for him I’m fine with it. They are the ones who’s jobs on the line with the free climb in this scenario I’ll trust them to make the call. I personally think Stroud and Young are far and away better and I’d rather go get the guy who will work out than sit and take the risk on guys that may not. -

People are too scared of failure to succeed sometimes. At least with a rookie QB you'd have a pretty easy to digest contract for four years and it would unlock the ability to make moves in free agency and extensions to help the team while you prove it out. -
Exactly, the NFL will tell us most of what we need to know with Richardson based on where he goes in the actual draft. If an NFL team is actually investing a top 10 pick into him its an apples and oranges comparison to Willis.
-
Sure but Willis was a short multi year starter at a low tier school that struggled with a ton of things QBs do like working a pocket. Just because he had hype by draft Twitter doesn’t mean the NFL felt that way and they proved it with where they took him. Richardson while raw both Physically and Film wise is much much different than Willis and it’s a lazy comp. Examples of Raw QBs with elite physical traits going in the top 10 is pretty low with like Allen and Lance being the two to draw from probably in recent years, it’s pretty rare an nfl team will throw a top 10 pick ONLY due to upside with QBs. NFL teams waited till the 3rd for Willis for a reason and with the Titans investment it’s not going to set them back very far. I’m very curious where they take Richardson think that’ll tell us a lot more about his skillset. I don’t necessarily want him but taking a flyer on athleticism in the third is a way different story than top 10.

A 3rd round QB who doesn’t look ready? We have one of those already.

I’d do it, but also can you imagine this board when we do it and take Will Levis. -
I will admit it is kind of funny to think about Reich willingly throwing himself back into the situation that got him canned in Indy with having a team too good to actually get a QB in the draft.
-
That's why im curious who specifically people think are going to be the guys behind Williams and Maye and how there is any certainty that will be a better group than Levis and Richardson. I cant imagine the team making a long term strategic decision based on the hope that someone becomes the third/fourth QB in next years class.
-
Who would you like next season? Williams and Maye are good but do you think we'll be in a position to get them? If not who do you have above Levis and Richardson?

QB Hype in February vs. Where they were actually drafted
stan786 replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think the prevailing opinion Stroud and Young are automatically gone by pick 3 is a little over stated on this forum. This data helps prove that out a little bit. I think people are going to be surprised how high Levis ends up going. Will be an interesting draft season to watch. Levis and Richardson have all the upside in shorts and tshirts as we go through pro days and testing. Young's height is going to turn off a number of teams I imagine. -
I read it like he thought the Texans wanted Bryce so just wanted to poke at them and see if they'd trade up to 1, but I have no idea how Irsay works it could have been just him talking to talk for sure.
-
I think the Cards and the Bears probably stay put in this scenario like you say. That Seattle 5 spot feels like such a natural trade up spot for us, especially with Fitts connections.
-
I really think there are decent odds we could get a Stroud/Young somewhere between 3-5. Everyone is playing mind games but Levis going in the top 2 would not surprise me at all. The one thing Fitt has proven out is a GM is he has great connections and generally has his finger on the pulse of drafts in terms of what others want. I think if we feel we have to move to 1 we'll make a giant push to do it but I also think I trust Fitt to read the room and position himself in the right spot to get the guy they want.
-
My order of Preference would be The Only Option in My Mind Find a way to get the staffs preferred Rookie QB. If they need to get to 1 to get who they want do it (Would personally hope that would be Stroud but thats up to Reich and crew), if they think they can get him at 9 thats fine as well. Break in Case of Emergency (Aka we cant get someone we like in the Draft) Just sign Darnold (or whatever veteran will take it) to a one year or cheap multi year deal and try and trade down and pick up as many picks next year as possible so we can be prepared to do it all again next year looking for a QB. (Not desired but at least we wont get stuck with a long term failure) Tepper and Reich should be committed Signing any Vet QB to a long term deal as our QB of the future would have me questioning this Staff, Front Office, and Ownership group pretty heavily. They all have failed multi years in a row trying to do this exact thing and tying up future cap space and committing ourselves to QB Purgatory would take all the wind out of my sails. I'm pretty confident we are going to be getting a QB we are going to build around this year though so I'm assuming its option 1 or 3 here.
-
Yes I follow the draft and I agree all QBs are risks. This class is probably very similar to next years class and most general classes. There have been 2 generational prospects in the past decade or so Luck and Lawrence. Caleb isnt generational yet and Maye has a lot to prove. End of the day Levis and Richardson probably slot in at the front end of that second QB group next year pretty easily at this point. Constantly waiting for a Generational Prospect isnt something that happens generally you are going to have to pick someone with risks.
-
Yeah I understand there’s always people who pop up, I think you are discounting how often QBs take a step back as well. The class has two great QBs at the moment and a bunch of maybes. I think you can see a guy or two break that into the first but it just seems way overly optimistic to assume there’s going to be that many first rounders based on what we know now. Don’t get me wrong a few guys are intriguing but other than the top two making plans around any of them is a massive risk.
-
Yeah I think he's got a really nice arm and I enjoy watching him work that offense but he's done it at this level one of his 5 years and his injury history has to be a bit of a concern. I think he could easily be a first round pick but I wouldnt bank on anything with him yet. I really think Jordan Travis is going to shoot up draft boards next year and could be in play for the 3rd QB but i'm not going to make decisions now based on that. Ewers is going to have to have some significant improvement to live up to the hype built for him. Honestly even Maye feels like about where Stroud was this time last year, another year of film always helps people fixate on the flaws. Maye losing his OC is going to be interesting to see him work through. I love him but nothings certain right now.
-
I'm curious who you have so high next year other than Maye and Williams. Penix, Daniels, Leary, Travis, Nix, and Ewers all have some pretty big question marks. Levis this time last year was more intriguing than all of them tbh. If Penix and Nix came out this year its pretty unlikely they would have been in the top 4 guys. I would have had Penix over Mckee and Hooker for sure though.

What is it with this fanbase and their love for bridge vet QB's?
stan786 replied to CamWhoaaCam's topic in Carolina Panthers
I can’t understand the thought of signing Carr to a big deal that he’s going to get and then drafting a QB at 9 and both losing the benefit of a rookie QB contract and taking weapons away from your new investment. Signing Carr very well could get us to the playoffs but not much more and would make it a lot harder to keep important pieces here when managing our cap space. It’s a low upside floor play but if that’s the desire then so be it. I’d much rather give up a number of picks and go get our long term guy and leverage his contract to add talent around him in Free Agency the next 2-3 years. But signing Carr and drafting a QB would just be some half in half out decision making that would limit the impact of both players and make it painfully obvious the organization has no confidence in its direction. If you sign Carr you can draft the QB of the future in 2-3 years if one falls but it’s more likely it’s a Cousins situation where it’s too hard to get out of and too hard to trade high enough to replace. That Alex Smith Mahomes situation isn’t something anyone should bank on. -
Carr would just show that Tepper and Reich have learned nothing from the last three years of failure. Our ceiling would be the divisional round of the playoff in our best year. Thats enough for some but I’d prefer to push to be a championship contender.

I feel like his sources dried up or something, Person has been posting things I feel like we all could post during this entire search.

People always overrate how good other teams are. All NFL teams have holes there are just certain ones that are more glaring than others, specifically QB.
