6. Carolina Panthers: Evan Neal, offensive tackle, Alabama I don’t know what Carolina will do. The Panthers could go Kenny Pickett here, because unless they trade their first-round pick next year to move into position to acquire another high pick, they won’t pick again till day three of the draft; they don’t have a second- or third-rounder currently. I know what they should do, and that’s take Neal if he’s there. The Panthers are as needy on the line as they are at quarterback, and there’s definitely not a sure long-term QB in this draft. Neal started 15 games at left tackle, 12 at right tackle and 13 at left guard in his three Alabama seasons. There’s been some chatter about teams downgrading him because of medical issues, but I’m told at least three-quarters of the teams in the league are good with his health. The long awaited and highly anticipated Peter King cock draft 1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Travon Walker, defensive lineman, Georgia Expect a surprise, I heard out of Jacksonville recently. Hmmm. That would eliminate Aidan Hutchinson here. The trendy pick after that has been Walker, so that really wouldn’t be much of a surprise. Ikem Ekwonu, perhaps? I’ll go with the one-year-college-start upside guy, Walker. It’s risky, and I’m as skeptical of one-year wonders as the next mock-drafter, but it falls into GM Trent Baalke’s history of taking the athletic playmakers. Sat out the season at Liberty, then started 23 games in 2020-’21. “He’s not the most ready right now but he’s by far No. 1 on this list,” one scout said. “He’s got the best arm of the group. He throws a pretty looking ball. He’s super athletic. He’s a really good kid. He’s going to take some time as far as mental development, but as far as physical talent this guy has everything. You hope for a situation when KC drafted (Patrick) Mahomes. They didn’t have to play him right away. It’s gonna take some balls to pick him but you’ve gotta have brains also. BAKER MAYFIELDQB, CLEVELAND BROWNS An NFC executive told Fansided’s Matt Lombardo the Seahawks are still “very much in the mix” to trade for Baker Mayfield. Mayfield’s market “has started to intensify,” according to Lombardo, with the Browns looking to move Mayfield ahead of next week’s draft. Seattle has been the top landing spot for Mayfield, but with $15.7 million in cap space, Cleveland would need to cover part of Mayfield's $18 million salary to get a deal done. The Panthers plan to wait until after the draft before considering Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo trades, while the Steelers are expected to have Mayfield interest if the Browns grant his release. Whichever team passes on drafting a quarterback could ultimately be where Mayfield ends up.
