Round 7 Pick 242: Kalon Barnes, CB, Baylor
TheSpecialJuan replied to Icege's topic in Carolina Panthers
KALON BARNESDB, CAROLINA PANTHERS Panthers selected Baylor CB Kalon Barnes with the No. 242 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Barnes' (5'11"/183) calling card is blazing speed. A high school track star, Barnes burned up the Combine with a 4.23 40, the second-fastest time in the history of the event. Unfortunately, he doesn't offer much beyond the wheels. Barnes plays very loose, getting beat initially off the snap, too often relying on his quickness to recover. His tackling needs work, as he doesn’t go for the mid-section to wrap up. The athletic ability is there, but it takes more to make it in the NFL. Barnes will likely have to begin his big-league career on practice squads. -

Round 6 Pick 199: Cade Mays, OL, Tennessee

CADE MAYSG, CAROLINA PANTHERS Panthers selected Tennessee OG Cade Mays with the No. 199 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Mays (6’5/311) was a top-25 overall recruit who started for two years at Georgia before transferring home to start his final two campaigns at Tennessee. Despite missing three games with a left foot injury in 2021, Mays earned second-team All-SEC honors for his work as the Vols’ right tackle. He has five-position versatility along with his four years of starting experience. Mays also impressed with a 75th-percentile relative athletic score during pre-draft testing. Mays’ play strength stands out on tape, both as a drive-blocker in the run game and when dropping the anchor in pass-pro. His biggest issue is a propensity to pop up and play high with a narrow base, gifting the leverage advantage to opponents while compromising his balance. Like Matt Slauson, Mays may need to iron out the kinks early in his career before entering a starting lineup -

Round 6 Pick 189: Amaré Barno, EDGE, Virginia Tech

AMARE BARNODE, CAROLINA PANTHERS Panthers selected Virginia Tech EDGE Amare Barno with the No. 189 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Barno (6’5/246) wasn’t even rated by the major recruiting services out of high school, but it might have been for the best as he excelled at the JUCO level before signing with Virginia Tech. He took a redshirt before receiving Honorable Mention All-ACC recognition in 2020, leading the team with 16.0 TFLs, 6.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. Barno started all 12 games in 2021, but his production slipped to 5.5 TFLs and 3.5 sacks despite an appreciable jump in pressure rate, going from eight percent in 2020 to 11.5 percent last year. His straight-line speed is among the best of all time at the position, running an incredible 4.36 40, while his 37-inch vertical is 93rd percentile and his 10-foot-11 broad jump is one of the top marks in history for an edge defender. However, the Achilles heel for Barno is his play strength. His spindly frame leads to him getting overpowered at the point of attack, and he lacks the counter ability or technique to dislodge from blocks. A fast and long-limbed edge defender with elite speed, Barno will need to make some changes to stick at the next level, but his special teams acumen could help him stick around -

I like it -
Chris Simms @CSimmsQB Matt Corral, my #1 QB in this draft. Insane athlete, quick feet and the quickest release I’ve seen from a prospect in years. And awesome arm strength w great accuracy. Needs to put it all together but it’s all there. He was Round 1 worthy for me. Steal for @Panthers 8:11 PM · Apr 29, 2022·Twitter for iPhone
