Would keeping Burns require another big D-line addition?
Rocky Davis replied to Donald LaFell's topic in Carolina Panthers
Another bad decision made by the former regime - letting Riddick walk for what Philly paid him. We could have easily signed him to the same deal. The key to increasing Burns value to this defense is another EDGE who demands attention/respect. If you don't add that then get ready for a heavy dose of running at Burns side from other teams and Burns putting up numbers similar to last year's. -
2023-2024 General Canes Thread
Rocky Davis replied to Panthers Fan 69's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
I see where you are coming from and I agree we need a top 6 forward for sure. We just haven't been able to put together the right deal for one. Last year we were very close with Svech injured and ran into Playoff Bob who burned his "heater" out getting Florida to the Cup where he became a human sieve against Vegas (who would have been difficult for the Canes to beat too, although I think we would have given them the biggest challenge). If Bobrovsky doesn't play like he did last spring we beat Florida. My point is this team *can* win a Cup without another top 6 added, but the guys in the room have to sacrifice every ounce of their being to get it. The 2006 team was beaten, bruised, and battered and we only knew how bad after they won the Cup. That's what it takes....getting to the dirty areas, winning puck battles, scoring ugly goals, blocking any shot you can (and I think this team needs to find this part of the game) to win a Cup. #LetsGoCanes #TakeWarning #CauseChaos -
I know some Canes fans think the "big" name forwards available are the key to a Cup, but let me just point to New Jersey last year who paid big for Timo, the biggest name available, just to lose to us in the playoffs and now are plodding through a miserable year. Well thought out decisions are better than impulse all day, every day. I have been happy that the Canes always seem to be in contention and I know there is a window for a cup, but I don't want stupid decisions destroying the Canes like what has happened to the Panthers. Give me a fair deal for Buch, kick the tires on Vatrano and Reilly, and see what you can come out with. Our D will be OK even if we trade TDA and we aren't getting a goalie. We are rolling with the D and G we have. It's all about the forwards.
-
I don't want to mortgage our future for Guentzel. He is now "the top" forward, but I don't know if he gets us over the top. He's good, but we also have to remember he's played with Crosby most of his career.... I like Buch better with term and probably a lower cost. I'd also look into what Vatrano and Reilly would cost. Reilly just hasn't found his place in Pittsburgh, maybe he could here? I think the Penguins would want Perets BTW - they are goalie needy too.

Luvu / Burns…. Gross / Peppers Dejavu
Rocky Davis replied to TheBigKat's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think Burns would bring back more than just that #29 pick from Detroit, not a lot more but another pick or possibly a true depth guy for the team. -
Honestly, when KK is playing well he is being paid fairly - it's just he needs to bring that kind of play every night. He's inconsistent and won't reach the ceiling scouts thought he had, but (and I know people hate when someone says this about an athlete) he has flashes/games where he has shown what he is capable of. I spoke about trading Pesce or Skjei, but we just can't this year even though I believe the time is somewhat right to move on from Pesce as much as I like him....Skjei is the better player we need to retain. I agree with Chief above that I would be willing to move Morrow and Philly's 2nd round pick we own this year and maybe a second or third in 2025 for a scorer a la Guentzel or Buchnevic. Less for the other forwards on the market. I would hope if we do trade Morrow we sign Chatty and Skjei in the off season because I believe we may be one D man down to start 24-25.

No Pono or Nikishin. We have some other prospects and draft picks that can get us there I believe.
-
I don't want to throw in Pono on any deal because I think he has upside that hasn't had a chance to be seen. I think it would be a mistake. TDA is definitely out there for a trade and I'd almost think that whatever is going on in the background with Pesce and Skjei could make them available although it would have to be for the best forward on the market. Pesce hasn't had a great season and doesn't have the leverage he had before the season started. TDA, Raanta, maybe Suzuki and maybe a 2nd round draft pick is what we have that I can see us using for a trade. Maybe Pesce to land a top 6 forward. I'd also include KK at this point, but I am not sure there is much of a market for him - I don't think he'll ever get to where scouts had his ceiling.

I was a little surprised we'd pay $1.3M for a 6th round pick to help out Toronto, but did we also do it to curry favor with the Ducks? There are possibly 3 targets on the Ducks that *could* help the team: Henrique, Vatrano, and a flier here: Zegras. Not saying this was the reason, but a 6th round pick barely moves the needle in any kind of trade and the chances of hitting on a player as a 6th rounder is low, low, low...although I will say the Canes have been very good at picking players and stashing them when they have some belief they will develop further.

The magical powers of Jim Rutherford.
-
and that is way too much for EP who wants somewhere in the neighborhood of $12M/year. He doesn't fit with our salary structure and isn't worth everything you listed, especially Nikishin, 2 1st round picks and a 2nd? That is crazy on our part. Necas, a prospect not named Nikishin, and a draft pick maybe, but for EP for the playoffs and then having to make sure to be able to extend him for the $$ he is looking for is a pass for me.
-
I think it's more realistic that we tag and trade rather than non-exclusive tag him. I don't know of any team that has an appetite for giving 2 1st rounders and Burns the $$$ he wants. I may be totally wrong, but we aren't talking about an elite QB here (who had shown multiple seasons of being great).
-
Bridges needs to just behave and understand he's a professional. The Hornets need to re-sign him, that's the best move.
-
Hornets did what they needed to do before and at the trade deadline - good moves for the team moving forward. I know the season is far from over, but I do want to see how the new ownership directs the new GM/President of Basketball operations now that Kupchak has stepped down. I actually have some excitement for the Hornets now.....go figure!
-
$25M is the max I would offer, anything more than that is insane....and that $25M offer is being overly kind to the performance he has given the last few years w/o Reddick on the other edge. Otherwise, trade him - tell him and his team to go find a team that really wants him and will sign him. If you can't get what is fair tag him and then trade him.

Getting Crunch Time for the Panthers and Brian Burns
Rocky Davis replied to 45catfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Burns ain't half a pep. Tagging him would put him in a reasonable contract for next season and some edge needy team would (or should) give us something of value for him to have him around $20M and have the rights to negotiate with him.....let him be their headache. He should have put up the numbers this past season, instead he had one really good game and then played it safe. He is not worth $30M until he actually shows he is, which I don't think he can. Hell, Hassan Reddick is a much better player than Burns and can't get into the $20Ms. -
Panthers current Free Agents
Rocky Davis replied to Leeroy Jenkins Ph.D.'s topic in Carolina Panthers
I can't believe we are losing so much........ /s -
I agree Wilks called a great 3.5 quarters - unfortunately the game is 4 quarters and crazy things like that misplayed/muffed punt played a part in the Chiefs being able to come back. I wholeheartedly agree that the 49ers defense was the most talented in the NFL this year and *if* Ryans was back they would have won that Super Bowl. The personnel on this years 49ers defense was better than last year's. The injuries were unfortunate, especially to Greenlaw - but I still cannot for the life of me figure out why he went zone - whether it be cloud, cover 2, cover 0. They were doing what they needed to do to beat the Chiefs: keep Kelce in check, stuff Pacheco, and keep Mahomes in the pocket. They abandoned it late in the 3rd quarter, into the 4th and OT. Wilks and the D aren't the only reason SF lost that game, but I guarantee you there were players on the 49ers D who didn't think Wilks was the right guy along with Shanahan and most likely the 49ers FO.
-
Rivera was the head coach when McDermott was the DC and despite Riverboat making McDermott play zone our defense was the best I can remember in this century with McDermott as DC. Shanahan is the HC not the DC and as far as we know, he only called a timeout once to tell Wilks not to play cover 0.
-
This, this, this - cover 0 cloud which Mahomey took advantage of a couple of time. Even when he was with Ron they would go to that soft azz zone and try to just keep the lead. Rivera and Wilks are two peas in a pod.
-
Old habits die hard. Honestly, the Chiefs didn't take as much advantage of that cover prevent soft zone than they could have....of course they didn't have great wide receivers.
-
I think most of us realize he dogged his last few years here. Yeah, he was playing for an imbecile coaching staff, but he didn't play for the fans or his teammates. I can never support a dude like that. He wanted to go west, his woman wanted to be anywhere but Carolina, and he got his choice of the Rams or 49ers and of couse he chose Shanahan and his "extended family." I don't wish injury on him, but I am glad he didn't get a ring and I hope he never does with the 49ers. Call me a hater, I call it like I see it.
-
They also wondered if he was a "system" QB - but with that arm most scouts knew better.
-
I don't think the 49ers offense was quite as bad as you say. They played pretty well, it wasn't like they didn't move the ball. The game went to OT!
