Jordan Staal Is Back With The Canes
Rocky Davis replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Those last two years may see Jordo play 4th line C and situational hockey for crucial face offs etc. Of course he could surprise us and still be playing at a decent clip in years 3 and 4. He's steady, a great presence in the locker room and our best FO man. Glad it got done. -
Pesce was still good last year, but he was either injured the second half of the season and playoffs or he has hit the wall. He wasn't nearly as good as he's been in past seasons, and I am sure the Canes are taking that into account. He is only 28 though, so it will still take a nice contract to get him signed. I hope he's back and at 100% if we go that route. DeAngelo doesn't need to play for a coach like Torts and needs to be a 3rd pairing and QB PP2. He isn't as bad as he was in Philly last year, but he still is a defensive liability.

Stanley Cup Thread. Vegas vs Florida
Rocky Davis replied to Panthers Fan 69's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Alex Lyons FTW Bob is cooked. -
You think Necas is ready to be Center? I think if he plays center his point production falls off. Just a hunch.
-
I think bringing back Freddie is the play. It looks like Koochie will be the backup at $2M a year now. Will miss Raanta, another great teammate. This braintrust needs to take a good hard look at the roster and see what they can do to maybe upgrade through trades. Drury is definitely a trade candidate, he looks like he will always be a 4th line grinder. Also, as the Athletic article pointed out Necas could bring in a good return after his solid regular season. I wouldn't say he was great in the playoffs when we really needed him to be...do you sell high? It's one of those trades you can come to regret, but if he plays lights out in the regular season again he is going to want a much nicer contract than the bridge deal he got. Can we afford it? I think we definitely need to get Fast signed to a reasonable deal for both sides, and Puljujarvi for $1M a season to play on the 4th line mostly. Coach him to be a physical, defense first forward with some scoring upside.
-
You really think Ghost will be back? What kind of contract do you think he'll command? I don't see the Canes overpaying for him. Overall, I wasn't impressed with him.....I thought he was our worst D-man during the playoffs, especially against Florida. I think Puljujarvi will be re-signed, BUT only if he agrees to a reasonable contract. I think if he is given a set role and has a full training camp with us he would be a good bottom 6 player. He has to use his size though and lay some hits on guys. Of course, maybe there are better options....I haven't really looked to see who is available.
-
Yeah I am kind of concerned about Fast. He has really been great for us and I think he would be hard to replace. I hope he likes Carolina enough to maybe take just a smidge less than the best offer he will get.
-
Hmmmmm..... I would like to see Fast and Staal back on reasonable deals. I think Staal may do a year to year type thing so he can call it quits when he wants to. Fast maybe a 2 year deal, he's been good and everyone knows he's a great teammate. I think Mack is a guy they should also look into signing as long as the contract is reasonable and not one way unless the plan is to keep him as an extra. Pool Party is a really hard call. We traded assets for him and I think there may be a place for him on either the 3rd or 4th line, but I am sure Rod and the brain trust will have a discussion about him and whether he is worth a contract. Not sure Stastny will play another year, but I think it's time to move on and get younger. Stepan will want to play...if his ask is reasonable he may be back. Ghost will want too much to slot into the 3rd D line, and he really didn't play great in the playoffs so he's outta here. Coghlan looked terrible when he had a chance to play, not sure if he just wasn't ready for the big leagues or if he just isn't it. Maybe it's Lajoie time?? I think we have to choose one of Raanta and Freddie and roll with them and have Koochie as our backup unless there is/are UFA goalies we think are better. I am not sure who is available. I wouldn't even doubt re-signing Freddie if he wasn't injured so much. He was great in the playoffs and has shown the ability to be lights out for long periods of time. Should be interesting.

Herein lies the problem with Rod - he doesn't trust the young guys until he does. I think that's why we rolled out that "old" 4th line the last couple of years. He wants to make sure that line is defensively sound and I think he feels like the younger guys aren't great in that regard. He has to change his perspective and let the youngins figure things out during training camp/preseason/early part of the year. If there is a glaring problem then maybe have a vet you trust to come in, otherwise let your rookies play. A speedy 4th line would be beneficial, maybe they also bring more of a scoring threat too.

PLD wants to play for the Canadians, I am not sure he would even sign an offer sheet to come to Carolina - he may want to play it out in Winnipeg and become a UFA so he can sign with Montreal. I know that sounds kind of weird, but for some players they want it all and as long as he doesn't fall off a cliff he'll be able to go to the Canadians if they have the $$$ which I think they would make it work. Just my 2 cents. I think Daniels exit will be handled in a more subtle way than him being fired. He'll be a special advisor or something like that and will be replaced. Would Justin Williams be a good assistant and overhaul our PP? I think Staal was planning on at least one more year from his quotes this past year. We'll see how it all shakes out in the offseason. Proud of the Canes for making it this far so banged up. I certainly didn't think they would get past the 2nd round - completely healthy I would be disappointed, but we were far from it.
-
Officials and leagues will almost never admit to being wrong unless the receipts are put out there and the majority of people make them respond. This crap has been going on so long against the Canes that every year I say the same thing, and I think Rod needs to tell his team this too: "You guys have to beat the other team and the refs, don't leave a game in the hands of the refs or you will ultimately lose every single mother fugging time. Play to make sure the refs and league can't steal it from you."
-
I know both Raanta and Andersen are FAs at the end of the year. After what Freddie showed do we re-sign him? I think we only re-sign one of Raanta or Andersen most likely, but Freddie showed up big time and kept us in all the games....and Raanta did as well in Game 2. I like Koochie, but I still don't see him as the starting goalie next year. Some tough decisions ahead.
-
I agree, this team played hard and through a lot of adversity in this series and lost by one goal each game with almost every ticky tack call going against them, all the injuries, playing two guys who were or would have been in the AHL (Mac and Drury) if we were healthy....nah I am not down on the team at all. Ghost was pretty bad in the ECF, he doesn't deserve to get a big $$$ contract but he will it just won't be from us. Pool Party doesn't know what he's supposed to be, I think Edmonton fugged him up. I think he needs to learn to play some good D with his size and be a third liner with some scoring potential. He looked lost in our "system." Patches and Svech and good health for our other players would have made this series different. Just bad luck!
-
Florida plays a low key dirty game and if the refs allow it they'll be in good shape. The stick between Freddie's legs/pads is just one of those examples where Florida got away with a lot of poo that should have been called. Injuries killed us.
-
Yeah, one of those bullshit calls by the NHL and the review center......that was never going the Canes way in Florida.
-
Congratulations the NHL refs and Panturds moving on to the Stanley Cup finals.
-
Staal is hurt, he usually doesn't pull up. Especially during the playoffs. I think we'll hear about some sort of upper body injury when the season is done.
-
This team is so depleted and isn't giving up....whole world against them and they are still grinding. #LetsGoCanes

Of all the teams I didn't want to play it was Florida. The way they came back against Boston and then took Toronto and now us out back behind the shed, I knew they would pose a huge challenge. They were the worst match up left for us and here we are. I give them credit, they have the neutral zone defended well and have been really good keeping us outside when we do gain the zone. Bob is out of his mind right now and we aren't getting any kind of breaks as far as posts or fluke goals. Still think we gotta throw everything remotely at Bob and have net front presence. Oh and for the love of he who is good and kind, please stop making cross ice passes unless they are available.
-
Aho hasn't been scoring, but no one really has. I am not going to place all the blame on Aho because the Canes are a score by committee team. He's played about as well as anyone on the team has besides our goalies. His defense has been great and most of his passes and shots have had purpose. I've seen a lot of crazy ass passes and plays from the Canes in the last three games that are really uncharacteristic. I don't know when we'll learn that cross ice passes aren't being allowed by Florida and you don't ALWAYS have to make an extra pass to get the puck on goal. It's infuriating seeing our guys give up shots to make an extra pass or try a cute little move only to lose possession or pass it off to a guy who shoots it right into the legs of the defender.
-
I would add that Nino could have been had.....the Jets got him, but I think he would have been a solid addition to the team. He also knew exactly what was expected and how we play! He was very affordable too! Would he have made a difference? I am not sure, but he scored a lot of dirty goals which would be welcome right now.
-
Yeah, I was on the "official" Canes board and those were some down times. I've heard people call Rod's style boring...I'm like go watch the Canes during the Bill Peters era. OMG I couldn't wait until they canned him, wish his dark news would have come out sooner so we could have gotten away from him sooner. At any rate, I'm glad the Canes have come so far since then and it would be nice to have a little luck and have our team healthy during the entire playoffs. Still my team through thick and thin and I am enjoying the success we've been having after all those lost seasons in the 10's. #LetsGoCanes

Canes vs Panthers Game 3 ECF 8pm
Rocky Davis replied to Panthers Fan 69's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
If someone told me we would hold Florida to an average of 2 goals per game through 3 games I would be ecstatic and thinking the Canes would have at least a 2-1 series lead. What I didn't expect was that we are averaging 1 goal per game. Somehow we were able to get through the first two rounds and our anemic offense went into hiding showing up here and there (mostly during the Islanders series). Now it's really obvious how much we miss Svech, how nice it would be to have Patches on the ice, and have Turbo not coming back from a broken hand and being really out of rhythm (he always is when he first comes back from injury). Throw in the fact that the refs have been poo this series and here we are...... I didn't think we'd get past the second round, and to be honest after Turbo went down I was prepared to go out to the Islanders so I am taking this in stride. I am pissed to be down 3-0 when we easily could be up 3-0 or 2-1. I am pleased to see our goalies plays so well, I never thought Andersen and Raanta would be so consistently solid. Give Bob his credit - he's made the saves needed to steal games and he's in the Canes head - along with us not being elite offensively is a bad combo. Oh yeah, having Staal obviously suffering from some kind of upper body injury doesn't help either. His line has still played well, but Staal isn't laying the wood like he was earlier in the playoffs and he can't put anything on his shot, let alone lift the puck when shooting. He's playing through it... I am not going to knock this team, they got farther than I thought they would and the fat lady hasn't sung yet. She is in the waiting room warming up though..... #LetsGoCanes
