Darnold's QBR was higher than Tannehill's
kungfoodude replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
Cam more than lived up to his potential. He just didn't last long enough to stay an elite player. He was more successful overall than a guy like Luck(in terms of ultimate accomplishments). Yet another #1 overall pick whose career was shortened by injuries and lack of quality OL. -
Agreed. As was stated in another thread, Jake is basically Sam's realistic ceiling.

Well, even they are aware that college performance isn't always indicative of NFL success. Especially for a smaller school guy like Christensen. He didn't get that rating facing P5 DE's and pass rushers. I LOVE non-P5 football but the average player is not as talented. He had an easier road(as did Kyle Wilson).

I wouldn't even put a QBR rating/ranking on it. He just needs to show he is the guy. Win close games, make big throws at critical times, don't consistently hurt the team with boneheaded decisions and generally LEAD a very successful offense. And do all that when things are going well and when they aren't. You do all that, and you are the guy. I don't imagine he is likely to be a QBR darling because he is a low completion percentage thrower and will always struggle with TD:INT ratio. Jake wasn't too far off that and he worked out.

It may change, it may not. The QB and OL are still big question marks, although the overall roster talent appears to be much better than 2020. Last year, it was obvious the Panthers were going to be terrible....and then they weren't quite as terrible as expected. This year....I think it is a complete mystery. We could be good, we could be mediocre or we could be bad. I don't have a good read on what to expect for the first time in many years. -
I don't agree or disagree with them ranking us next to last. I understand why they feel that way. That's the big difference, I can see their point of view, whereas you can only see yours. I don't agree or disagree with their rating of him in college. I personally like PFF but it isn't bulletproof. I am definitely aware that PFF college performances/ratings are not a 1:1 translation with PFF NFL performances. If you look at their data alone, you probably aren't going to see a strong correlation with high PFF college ratings and high NFL PFF ratings. Furthermore, they didn't even rank him as their best offensive lineman(or even tackle) in their draft rankings. So, that kind of shows how much stock they even put in their own college ratings to translate to the NFL.

If we extend him for being mediocre, the war drums will be beating for Rhule and his staff to be gone. I see only two logical options; Darnold is the guy and the search is over, Darnold is not the guy and we jettison him.

I have to assume it is true. Ultimately we may never know what percentage of blame went to Hurney versus Rhule and the staff. In the end....it doesn't matter much. Teddy flamed out and he is gone. -
The Arnold & Tremble Combo: Why it will shine
kungfoodude replied to saX man's topic in Carolina Panthers
If he turns into a viable pass catcher, even better. -
I am curious to see if that was the offense or Sam just leans backyard football when it all breaks down(which most gunslingers do) anyway. The one thing we can say about Teddy, is that he rarely ever went off script. I think he'll see plenty of pressure in 2021, so we will get a good side by side of what his tendencies are in this offense versus Gase's.

This is part of a greater problem with general sports fans. Just because we disagree with something(article, analysis, statistic, etc) doesn't make it invalid. We get way too much confirmation bias in here from the posters. It's natural for everyone to have that to an extent but some people are leaning into that a bit much. Especially when you see such an overreaction to information the person doesn't like or agree with.

The question is, will he get that time here with our current OL? I am not sure our OL is any better than the Jets but our scheme SHOULD help him avoid pressure. It did with Teddy. -
I don't think he is even capable of playing that conservative style of football anyway. He has always been a gunslinger. If we or he tried to change that, he'd probably be out of the league in a season. We don't need to reinvent the wheel, we just need him to make progress as far as making progressions, making reads and not generally going full Favre.

I didn't really think he needed to explain that but I guess I was wrong. He is talking about first three years in the NFL. That info takes 5 seconds to reference on PFR. -

You realize he said "first three seasons" in his post, right? Read it again. -
The Arnold & Tremble Combo: Why it will shine
kungfoodude replied to saX man's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don't think Tremble will factor much into the passing game. He wasn't really that guy in college, so I don't see that happening at the NFL. Well, at least not initially perhaps in a couple of years. I think Arnold is the guy as our pass threat. Tremble is a great blocker, though. I think we might quickly forget the loss of Armah. I didn't like the position we drafted him in but I think he is definitely a day one contributor. -
Okung was the best LT we have had since Gross. He just didn't play enough to matter. And, you are just getting upset because people don't agree with your world view. Calm down. This is a discussion board. Prior to you showing up about 2 weeks ago, we discussed things that people disagreed on. It happens.

Agreed. I don't think we are going to return to seeing CMC targeted 130+ times in the passing game for a season. He is a PART of the offense, not the entire offense. I would be pretty disappointed if Darnold isn't testing defenses deep at a substantially higher rate than Teddy did.
