Yeah, that guy has an unhealthy QB fetish. Not in a good way.
-
Yeah, I suppose he is. That is a tempting contract. I was only looking at it from a "cutting them costs the Raiders almost nothing" perspective. I think I am underrating him, as well. This market is crazy right now and that is a VERY good contract. I just can't fathom why you would elevate Mariota over him.
-
I don't think giving up a lot of draft capital is wise. He is a good candidate to get cut. He isn't a Watson or Stafford level QB. We might have to overspend in free agency depending on how many suitors there are. I would think he will draw a lot of action as a free agent.
-
I'd say he is probably in that same class as Goff and Jimmy G. Average to below average NFL starters. I am not against it given the money left on his deal(slightly less than $20 mil in 2021/2022). I don't know how much I would be willing to give up in a trade since he might just get cut.

How close did the Panthers come to getting Stafford? Dang close.

Yeah, anyone with half a brain can literally see that. The only "Stafford Sucks" discussions come from fans who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Football guys don't talk about Matt Stafford as not being a very good QB. It is plainly obvious that he is. I will say that these "good" or "dodged a bullet" threads probably aren't going to age well. I rarely like to be the "told you so guy" when it is bad for the Panthers but I won't be shy about reminding these Huddlers when Stafford is successful in LA. Especially if we whiff on a QB this offseason. Make no mistake, it is not a celebration to miss out on an answer for the most important position in football. I am not going to celebrate "missing out" on Watson for whatever giant haul he commands. -

How did it take this long for that to get called out? -
You are about as far off as humanely possible. Watt is also engineering an exit from the Texans and apologized directly to Watson for "wasted one of your years." You also realize that multiple Houston teammates told Watson to leave before he took this stance, right? Seriously, where do you get all these inaccurate takes from? Do you even pay attention to league news or just invent this stuff in your head? If he is a whiny bitch then I guess JJ Watt is too since he wants out(and publicly made statements all season long indicating that) with a year left in his contract. I guess that makes his teammates whiny bitches too for telling him to leave. Or maybe all these guys who want to win see that franchise for what it is, a crumbling dumpster fire. An owner who hired a professional search firm that didn't even have the GM they hired on their list of candidates, having a guy like Jack Easterby with zero personnel or scouting experience(sound familiar?) and allowing another useless New England slug to literally deconstruct the franchise on the way out. Maybe all these guys are seeing what the rest of the league is starting to realize, most of these New England guys are trash and don't know what they are doing in a front office.

The bulk of teams decide not to go after it. Arbitration is likely to be slanted in the teams favor but it doesn't mean they will recoup all of it.

Maker's Private Selection Rob Samuels pick

Well...I kept drinking. -
I think we are seeing how desperate they are to move beyond Teddy. At some level, that does give me hope. Rivera would have stuck it out for 4-5 seasons to find out how it worked out.
-
-
-
Yeah and he probably will not. But, we did try to take a flier on Haskins, so you never know.
-
He might be able to beat out Teddy but that just means he is the best of a bunch of backup QB's.
-
Yeah but he also isn't going to be our franchise QB, either. He's just an upgrade over Walker and Grier.
-
That isn't the thing I was responding to, though. It was the fact that you thought he is better than those guys. He isn't even close to the level of Stafford or Goff. He is certainly not worth more than any of the top 4 QB's in this draft. I am 100% fine with Trubisky on a very cheap 1 year. Definitely want no part of him on anything more than a 1 year cheap deal, however.
-
He isn't anywhere near the caliber of Stafford and he isn't as good as Goff. He might have a high ceiling but he is one of the streakiest QB's in the NFL. I wouldn't take him over any of the top 4 QB's in this draft either. I will gladly take him on a one year veteran minimum deal, however.

Stafford didn’t want to come to the Panthers
kungfoodude replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
I know but we are also living in the age of late 30's and early 40's QB's. I am certainly not saying it is the rule but I don't think it is happening rarely enough for it to be the exception, either. It seems like we are getting a lot more of these top 10 guys sticking around until their late 30's. -
It is in the new CBA. Article 4, Section 9 (a) (vi) and also (b). That addresses the arbitration of attempting to recoup "Forfeitable Salary Allocations." It does read as if they have to go after it in a year-by-year manner, though. They can't go after the future years outright, it doesn't appear. So he is likely to be out his 2021 salary and bonuses at most. Unless the Texans are dumb enough to continue this past a year. IMO, the league would be likely to step in if that happened. If there is anything the NFL doesn't like, it is bad press.
-
It is still subject to arbitration. It is not something they can just "take."
-
The signing bonus arbitration is part of the negotiated CBA. The owners gained some more ability to levy fines for holding out but that didn't include the ability to summarily go after signing bonuses. Furthermore, the NFLPA isn't going to roll over on that one. Watson isn't Antonio Brown.
-
That is incorrect. All that money was paid out at signing. That is all that is required for him to get that money, to simply sign. However, they can go after the bonus in an arbitration. It isn't likely to net them a victory and certainly not a complete victory. What they can do is pile on fines as he sits out but that won't impact his bonus money much.
