All aboard the Tommy Tremble bandwagon
kungfoodude replied to Panther Believer's topic in Carolina Panthers
I 100% don't disagree but blocking TE's can be had relatively easily later in the draft, as UDFA's or free agents. Not so much knocking the player, more critical of the positional value. -
Not to mention he is 25, so his window might be smaller than usual. But, he did the Mormon mission thing so that was also probably two less years of wear and tear. I agree, though. Odd to keep trading down when there are so many good OL prospects you are passing up.

We will see. Not sure he is better than Scott. If he is, huge bonus. I would think he likely start somewhere on the line. Outside of Paradis and Moton there aren't many starting caliber OL on the roster.

That is actually not a bad point. As bad as we are likely to be at LT, having a nasty blocking TE could be the safety net that limits how much damage our LT situation could cause. Considering how likely it is that our LT is a turnstile, if we see a lot of schemed help from Tremble(or others) that would make me feel a lot better about the coaches understanding the roster situation a little better. The anti-Shula move. -
Matt Rhule “I thought Scott was masterful today”

I genuinely just don't see what the plan is, if there is one. I hope it becomes clearer with time and success. -
fug Joe Horn.

I think the scouting reports on him say he is likely an OG in the NFL. Leaves a big hole at LT still but if he can be an above average starting OG, that's still an improvement.
-
Yeah, just seems like a high draft pick to use for a one dimensional player. Let's hope he is better than he was in college.
-
Let's hope we are planning on doing something with those picks next year. I am not sure how much use the pile of 4th and 5th rounders will be other than fixing our persistent depth issues. Packaging to make them into better draft picks would be nice. I do wonder if we use them to trade for players. Maybe we plan on doing more building that way? Seattle was fairly active in that world, IIRC.

I am always skeptical of the "untapped" potential guys. Were they untapped or does that potential just not exist?
-
Lots of really head scratching decisions. I think we have gotten two starters and three potential depth guys with a chance to start. The potential is definitely there on a lot of them. I just don't think the FO and coaching staff's opinions on roster needs align with my personal view of it. Definitely very concerning that we don't really view OL as a priority. I certainly hope the moves work out and my skepticism is unwarranted.

Seems like the kind of guy I would have been pumped to land in the 5th or 6th round. Not sure I see the value in a 3rd round pick for a blocking TE/H-Back with limited pass catching ability. -
We literally don't have an NFL caliber TE. That is definitely a "need" based move to just attempt to plug a roster hole. He offers theoretical upside but so did Ian Thomas. I don't think he will be any better than Thomas was.

I am not really enthusiastic about any of the picks. I like Marshall the best. The BYU OT definitely can give us a potential upgrade at OG, or at least improve our two deep. The TE, I don't see much there other than a special teams/role player. But, we really didn't have an NFL capable TE on the roster, so it fills a hole in the roster. Definitely seems like our plan is to mainly upgrade our backup/special teams personnel rather than get starters. I guess our front office really, really, really didn't like this draft class. It will be interesting to see if they are right about that take in a few years.

I don't think I would take into account moves we "might" make. Just grade the picks we made. I will do this tomorrow and then have an "overall" grade. The overall would be a better spot to try and grade the Day 3 moves.
-
How do you have our picks rated? #59 Terrace Marshall(WR - LSU), #70 Brady Christensen(OT - BYU), #83 Tommy Tremble(TE - Notre Dame)

Round 3(a) - Carolina Panthers Select BYU OT Brady Christensen
kungfoodude replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
Highly unlikely to be an NFL OT but we need just about every OL position other than RT, so if he can start at guard, it's an improvement. Very perplexing that we just took one OL in the first three rounds. -
QB, OT, OG, C, DT, S, LB, RB, K
-
I guess. Not sure that will actually work but whatever makes them feel better.
-
I am gonna be honest, I hope eventually a strategy will emerge.
-
Well, we don't seem to be building through free agency and we don't seem to be building through the draft.....so.....I guess maybe open tryouts?
-
Move up?? Did you not just watch us draft?
-
So we had picks with value and we traded them for picks with much less value. I don't even know what to say.
-
I am not a big Jones fan but that is a good point. If either he and/or Fields establish themselves as an upper tier NFL starter, it will be tough on the staff. If Zod was right about Tepper wanting Fields.....I can see a scenario where he begins to be more aggressively involved if Fields ends up being a big star. That could be a disaster for us.
