That isn't unfair but we should wait to see how the 2022 offseason goes on the OL before we lob that grenade, IMO. A clearer argument could be made for the lack of investment in this past draft, given the resources we had.
-
100% agree. They deserve the lumps they will rightfully take for not addressing the OL this offseason, and Rhule(somewhat) for not addressing it in the previous offseason. The only reason I feel better about it is that I don't think you are gonna see the same level of hubris we had under Hurney and Gettleman. I expect them to pivot and try to get better.
-
I don't feel like we got worse after our recent trades. I believe Fitt when he days that he has tried to improve the OL. I think it is telling when he says that he can't even get people to come off backup OL.
-
In fairness, you want them to be in a "win now mode" even if that is a bridge too far.

I almost sprayed bourbon all over this table.

As you are well aware, I was heavily anti-Darnold prior to the season but I just don't see how we could ever hope for him to be successful like this. It would be different if he were failing completely on his own accord but that isn't the case at all.
-
Yeah, some of that is the natural gunslinger in him. He was never going to be a true game manager.
-
It is kind of funny to see some of the Sunshine Squad jumping off a cliff while I am being optimistic.

I think since we are having Jets-like OL play, we are seeing Jets-like Sam Darnold. His ceiling is probably lower than we want but it's hard to get super upset at him when we knew he was a streaky player and didn't play well under pressure but we assembled a bottom 5 OL unit in front of him.
-
I am all for the youth movement in the OL but we also need to be prepared for the fact that they may not be better than the bad vets they are replacing. This isn't the Ron Rivera staff.
-
I am not saying I don't share those doubts, I just think that the talent they are assembling in the time they have is quite amazing. Not sold on the coaches just yet. Some good, some bad. I am still in a "wait and see" mode on them. I just think it's hard to have a great deal of success when your offense is so hamstrung by extremely poor OL play and underwhelming QB play.

Our problems are much fewer and quite obvious, though. Think about how many problems we had in 2020 or 2019 or even 2018. That and without a young, talented core. This one sucked but this is quite the assortment of talent to build from. The bones are there for an extremely successful team. We just have to add some more meat to those bones.

It's easy to be upset by this loss and last week's loss but let's not lose sight of how incredible our roster turnaround is from the end of 2019. The jump in talent and depth we have made in the roster is something I couldn't even fathom in early 2020. This may not be the playoff caliber team we wanted in 2021 but make no mistake....we are WAY ahead of schedule. Add to that the fact that our FO is not sitting on their laurels. "In on every deal" indeed. This loss fuging sucked, it was avoidable but there is a bright, bright, BRIGHT future for this roster. That future just isn't here quite yet.

Matt Rhule just showed us his true colors.

I think the staff and FO learned some obvious lessons about OL quality this season(and will continue to learn the same lesson). The fact that Fitterer said he has been actively trying to improve the OL makes me comfortable with the future. I think we see that our staff and FO immediately realize how much of a mistake they made and will learn from it. Although a lot of the fans could obviously see how bad the OL moves were, they can see it now too and I think they will learn from it. We all just have to take some nasty medicine this year learning from those mistakes. -
We need to improve 8 of 9 players in that unit. That makes us a potentially great team. Luckily making significant improvements across the board shouldn't be that hard. About 4-5 of the guys that have gotten snaps for us wouldn't see the field for the majority of other NFL franchises. I can't say I would trade CMC. You need a high caliber player/pick(s) in return and his trade value is probably not that high. Banged up as he has been, I don't think you dump an elite player for the sake of dumping him. You need to get something of significant value in return. Also, no panic on the window here. We are insanely young on defense and I am not nearly as worried about our ability to continue to replace players on it as I have been with previous teams.

Rhule/Fitterer thought this was a NFL caliber offensive line.

We are discussing sinking and floating turds here. This line has been bad in every single game. There is literally no question about this. I know for whatever reason you thought we had put together a competent offensive line this offseason but there have been few more obvious offseason blunders in franchise history than what we did on the OL this offseason. It's so incredibly upsetting because of how fuging obvious it was. All that said, this is a far, far better team that I ever expected. QB is still weak but we really are just a competent OL away from being a consistent playoff team. Maybe a competent OL and good QB away from being a championship caliber team. Zero chance I thought I would say that before the season. -
TBQH, he isn't that talented. He is a relatively one trick pony as an OL prospect. Brute strength and size with little lateral mobility or finesse. He may end up being a good 2nd string OL here but we only look at him with hope because of how poor the rest of the roster is. This is shades of Daley. Hoping upon all hope our late round draft OL bails us out.

Those were not even remotely competent acquisitions. -

Cut for who? This OL is the best available to us. Sad as that may be, it is the truth. -

kungfoodude replied to TheoJay10's topic in Carolina Panthers
This is his second straight game making boneheaded throws that actively hurt us. He is who he is. It doesn't help to try and coach his bad habits out of him and put a HS JV OL in front of him, however. This is not setting him up for success. Not at all. -
This is the same thing that was said about Little and Daley. The fact of that matter is, if you can't make it through this dumpster fire of an OL, you probably aren't going to amount to much. Not saying it is impossible but the odds are very low. And, why should we expect anything of Brown? He is a 6th round draft pick. Even making the roster was a win.
-
The people blaming this on the defense, I literally have no idea what planet you are living on. This was the most obvious blame imaginable.

50/50 Darnold and that terrible OL. -
I think you have to take at least 7-8 OL in the next 3 drafts. Sounds crazy but I mean it. There isn't a single member of our roster on that unit worth keeping other than Moton. Not one. That is a hell of a rebuild. QB....I think Darnold is a better bridge QB than Teddy was. Let him play out his deal and maybe try and get him back for a short term cheap deal while you target your next QB.
-
What changes are left to make? I mean....seriously? Fitterer already said that we cannot acquire anyone via trade. The bed has been made and we just simply have to lie in it. It's mostly upsetting because of how insanely predictable it was. Anyone with any sense could see this coming from a mile away. I love the defense they have built. It is far, far, far, far better than I ever imagined it being. I just wish we had been much wiser with our draft and FA moves on that offensive line. Any improvements at all would have been huge.
