Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?
kungfoodude replied to Verge's topic in Carolina Panthers
Sounds like someone who has never looked at his almost 3:1 TD:INT ratio in his career. -
Harbaugh to Carolina Makes Too Much Sense...

Yeah, remember that .700 winning percentage that Harbaugh had? Doesn't sound like a bunch of disgruntled players laying down, now does it? -

I mean....I think the choice is that or unemployment. As much as you heard some players bitching, it never tanked their teams enough to not win 10+ games. If players complain their way to that kind of record, I hope our players constantly complain. -
PFF grades from Panthers Week 17 loss to Buccaneers

That would be insane after what we turned down for him already. -

Yeah, I get that but all joking aside, I doubt he accepts that. If he does.....yikes. -

Minshew is better than Darnold, IMO. Not as talented but takes much better care of the ball, so he would be an option. https://overthecap.com/free-agency There are actually a lot of game managing type QB's that are better than Darnold that should be available. No one that is going to blow your socks off or become the franchise(save maybe Carr or Jackson). Garoppolo may be available so he would probably be the most premium option realistically available but at his price you may as well go after Carr. Then you have a group of game managing QB's like Minshew, Bridgewater, Brissett, etc. A few cheaper, younger higher talent gambles mixed in. Overall, there will be options available but nome of them particularly stellar outside of Carr or Jackson. -

I don't think he is likely to accept a demotion. -

Yeah, that is a mid to late first type of move. The top end of that position has extreme value but it's too rare to get those type of players. Not a premium value position unless it is a truly elite player. -

That is really gonna be an issue with any of the non-offensive guru candidates, TBH. What almost no candidate has is the established track record of success that Harbaugh does. -

I think once we won a ring I would finally accept it. Basically everything before that I would hate his fuging guts, the way I do now. -
NFL Schedule Options After Last Night
kungfoodude replied to Sgt Schultz's topic in Carolina Panthers
Cancel an entire week of games??? Lol. I didn't think there would be a less likely scenario than moving the entire playoff schedule but you found one. So you think a multi-billion dollar industry is just going to willingly give up(using some figures from 2020) roughly half a billion dollars in revenue? -

Ugh.....I would hate to have to accept that. Thankfully it is very unlikely. -

Yeah, Tomlin does have the advantage of being on the most stable franchise in NFL history but he has clearly proved to be one of the best coaches in the NFL. -
Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?
kungfoodude replied to Verge's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don't get caught up on age at all unless it's close to 30(Weinkie situation), a QB that has taken a beating and/or has a very suspect injury history. I care about ability to play the game and adjust to the NFL. Sam really just doesn't have that at all. It is what it is. I think we have very, very, very different views on Sam. I am willing to bet he is just simply not in the league in 3 or 4 years. That how far behind he is. His value is so extremely low in the backup QB world. Yeah, this horse has been beaten enough. I will be glad to see him gone and just move on with our QB carousel to a hopefully better prospect(or prospects). -

Yeah, I don't think this is really about getting a hot shot offense with him. It's about restoring credibility for the franchise and getting some success. It's hard to beat a guy that never had less than 10 wins in a season. Who knows if he can replicate that here but count me in for willing to find out. -

I mean....the man did play in the NFL as a QB. -
Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?
kungfoodude replied to Verge's topic in Carolina Panthers
He is without question a very talented athlete. He had success in college, as well so it is a credit to his natural abilities for him to ever make it to the NFL in the first place. But, as with most things in professional sports, being successful at the highest level is about much more than just natural abilities. -
Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?
kungfoodude replied to Verge's topic in Carolina Panthers
Lol. I mean, I am not gonna get fooled by that argument, man. It has been made before and it very clearly was not a factor. We may as well move on. We have vastly, VASTLY different opinions on him. -
Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?
kungfoodude replied to Verge's topic in Carolina Panthers
I mean, it really has been about limiting him. Tampa was the only game where it wasn't. It doesn't matter, there is no point in rehashing this argument since he is very likely to be off the team and a relative afterthought for the rest of his career. Unless he becomes the new Matt Moore and develops a completely illogical cult following. -

He was actually a basketball player for most of his childhood. Went to football in HS and only played one full season as a QB. Played some spot duty due to injury as a sophomore. So we are talking about the equivalent of a middle school or early HS player in terms of total experience versus most prospects. -

He also had a couple of INT's dropped in the game. His run this year shows that he has improved but he is still a backup caliber QB. One that really can't be trusted to do much more than manage a game with a light workload. The more he throws, the greater the odds of him making a lot of mistakes. He's just very, very limited in his processing abilities. It's been discussed at length here but keep in mind he has very little background as a QB. His learning curve was already going to be much steeper than almost any other prospect. -

kungfoodude replied to Verge's topic in Carolina Panthers
Well most of the QB desperate teams are picking in positions to be able to get one through the draft. It's really mainly the Colts, Texans, Raiders and Seahawks. 3 of those teams have better options for starters on the roster now and all of them pick in the top 8. Not to mention he wouldn't be in the top 10 free agent QB's(some of which are likely to resign with their teams) in 2023. That is basically the recipe for being a backup QB. His only chance at starting is likely here. -

Eh.....strike while the iron is hot but I get what you mean. Probably one of those loose lips situations. I doubt this was supposed to be for public consumption. Also shows that Wilks is merely a consideration and not the guy.
