New Coach Thread 2: Electric Boogaloo
kungfoodude replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
I suspect that it doesn't actually "settle" itself until Arizona, Denver and Carolina all announce their head coaches. Then I think all the media speculation about Payton will be over. It's too juicy of a story for them not to keep egging it on. -

There have been a bunch of leaks but none of them seemed particularly easy to verify. The closest we got was probably the Ben Johnson one. -

The scenario where we are "pushing" coaches onto any head coach, means it's time for a new head coach, IMO. Let the football guys do football stuff. If you don't agree with it, let them know you don't agree with it. If it proves to be a mistake on the field, show them the door. -

Surprised to see Kafka that far down the list. -
Which candidates would YOU interview in round two?

I actually like Caldwell a lot but he is 69 years old and has had some health issues so I don't think he is in serious consideration. Honestly, I would put him on my list(Steichen, Kafka, Reich) in the place of Reich if he were 10 years younger. But I would also have Payton if his interest was legitimate, which I do not believe it is. -

David Newton is maybe the least respectable person to get speculation from. I trust speculation from 70% of the Huddle over him. -

This is YOUR list. IE, what are your favorite candidates. -

McCarthy also had far better QB's playing for him. He also was often criticized as the Packers coach for not meeting expectations(fairly or unfairly). Not sure I would necessarily pin the Dallas issue on a specific person. -

I would put a healthy some on him heading back to TV. -

For the record, I did not include Payton in my personal list because I am becoming convinced he isn't that serious about taking a job this offseason. -
Curious to see how this matches the Panthers. This is multiple choice, obviously.

I am not sure consecutive 12-5 seasons meet the threshold of "poorly coached." The 2021 playoffs loss was a disappointment as a higher seed at home but they were supposed to lose the game that they just lost. So, while those crunch time play calls were both unfortunate I do think both McCarthy and Moore are getting way too much shade thrown at them. Consider that had Dak Prescott not heaved two insanely bad INT's this very well could have been a comfortable Cowboys victory. -

You are aware that this narrative you are pushing is going to look very silly if the Eagles win this weekend, right? -
We have some talent on the roster but it is not a stacked roster like some seem to believe. Good defense, good OL, couple of weapons on offense and that that's about the gist of it. Nothing elite about any single aspect(maybe the kicking/punting). It's a decent spot for a coach to have a quick turnaround if there is a plan at QB.

No, it really isn't. -

I am glad that it is highly unlikely anyone in our organization has that point of view. -

I gotta be honest, if the question of how to develop Matt Corral comes up during any of these interviews, we can just go ahead and consider this franchise as doomed. No 3rd round QB that has never played an NFL game should ever factor into something as important as a head coaching interview. -

As always, if you are having to force coaches on your head coach, he doesn't need to be your head coach. -
There is no QB in the NFL that looks at our roster and says, "Man that TMJ guy will be a stud!" It's basically Moore and a bunch of JAG's. Not something enticing for a FA QB.

Tend to agree. Deep pool and WR is very weak for us.

Watching Jalen Hurts sort of hurts.....

It is very rare that bad owners get lucky. -
When will the Panthers hire a new HC?

Technically Wilks would be considered a new hire. -

This process is very much longer than the last already. I also believe the only remaining candidate we have been linked to in the playoffs(that hasn't declined our interview request) is Shane Steichen. But he has also already interviewed with us. -
You are getting to this mountain via several levels of pure speculation. Just.....chill. Try and remain calm. Let the coaching search play out before we try and speculate about free agency and then the 2023 draft and then the offseason and then the preseason and then the regular season and then the postseason and then the 2024 offseason and then we can finally get to 2024 draft speculation.

I think we have more waiting to do, unfortunately. I can't say I am upset that they are taking their time with this process considering what a disaster the last coach hiring process was. It is tough as a fan to be in this limbo where you really can't plan or effectively speculate on the offseason until this gets resolved.
