Getzenberg looks at the left tackle options
kungfoodude replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah and perhaps they don't value OL as much as we do. And also perhaps they didn't view Slater as an elite LT prospect. I was upset initially but I think we are gonna end up with a good player. The long term question of whether it was the correct choice is for another day. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing Horn develop and possibly become another top 10-15 CB, which we have been lucky enough to have a few of in the past 15 years. -
We really have no idea whether these coaches have any clue how to be successful at the level. The early indications are they seem to know what they are doing but we also know that there were definitely signs of learning curves having to be navigated. I don't get too concerned about that. In a couple of seasons if you don't see the growth, then you really start to worry a lot. We will never know the full story on Teddy. Was that the rumored, "He was a Hurney guy" thing or was he a Brady guy or was he a Rhule guy or some combination? We'll never know. What we do know is that the boogeyman(Hurney) is gone now. The early indications of guys we were interested in (Stafford and Watson) clearly shows some ability to at least recognize what elite NFL talent is. After the past season, we are going to see if they have the ability to determine what a potentially elite QB is(Fields/Darnold). In the very likely event that Darnold fails, I am not going to jump off a cliff and start calling for the firing of everyone. We do know he wasn't even close to the first option we had in mind. So, the big test to me will be in 2022 when we are going through our third consecutive QB search. Do we keep making poor choices or do we get desperate? The next QB search is where I am going to learn the most about the staff/FO, IMO. I think every successive offseason and draft class will allow patterns to start emerging and we the fans to start to deduct whether we have the guys that can build a long term successful franchise or not. The best possible outcome is that we crushed free agency and crushed the draft. The likelihood of that isn't great but if we can at least clearly see that our decisions were largely correct, that will give the fans peace of mind and perhaps even great hope for the future.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Carolina Hurricanes Game Thread
kungfoodude replied to Harbingers's topic in Carolina Panthers
The Caps vs. Bruins series is great because it removes one of the only two remaining teams I hate. I don't even care about facing either of them. Just let them lose. -
Yeah, I have the same doubts in the back of my mind. Is he so confident in his ability to maximize everyone's potential, that he is ignoring what it takes to be a great professional football player? The warning signs are all there. Dramatic preference for very young players. Drafting guys based on athletic ability and measurables rather than actual accomplishments. When I let the serious doubts creep in, all those thoughts go through my head. I want that to be needless worrying.

Ned is the dude. He is our franchise goalie. I got that sense pretty early on this season. -

Need to get some offensive firepower working. They are dominating us in this period. -

Need to put one in early to start to break them. Get ready for some cheap poo if we go up 2+. I am worried about them intentionally injuring one of our guys. -
I am very concerned we are gonna see a return to force feeding the ball to CMC. Not sure how many noticed how he was often used in his limited action last season.
-
Yep. I don't think there is gonna be a question about whether he can do it or not.
-
That is possible too. He has to add enough value to beat out whoever is ahead of him in those positions he is being considered for. If he is mediocre at everything that doesn't really make him valuable, regardless of how versatile he is. I definitely understand the value of having a Joe Webb type guy but he has to show that ability and proficiency, as well.
-
Well, you expect a JAG as your #3 QB. He is a JAG or lower, that is really a given. If he can help with special teams, he adds value that Walker or Will Grier do not add. I doubt seriously he will ever be used like Taysom Hill because I would hope our coaches aren't fuging dopes like Sean Peyton is and use some gimmick player for the sake of wanting to look like a genius.
-
Yeah, I mean I don't think anyone here actually expects him to be much more than roster fodder. He'll be a Huddle JAG infatuation for a couple of seasons and then will be out of the league. Still, probably more useful that Will Grier given that he can play special teams.
-
Don't do it CMC. Your jersey is on my buy list this offseason.
-
I have RG deficiency.....is Joe Brady a ginger???? I can't tell.
-
Completely absurd. This guy must have lost a fantasy football game because of DJ.
-
I don't think it matter if PJ, Will or Stevens or the 2nd or 3rd stringers. If they see significant time, we're gonna be just as fuged. The only thing that will change is the position we are getting fuged in.
-
If Darnold doesn't pan out, that is easily the worst assembly of QB's in the NFL currently.

Getzenberg looks at the left tackle options
kungfoodude replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Nah, there was a clear drop off from Okung to Scott. We can hate on Okung all we want but he was the best LT we have had since Gross. Scott did pretty well for what he was. I do think there is a good chance he wins that job if the new guys aren't an upgrade. He wasn't great but he held his own enough. Not a guy I would want as a long term starter but I could see him as a long term depth guy for certain. -

I have no stats to back this up but I have to believe that is one of the highest injury rates in football is on the OL. -
The only time I have ever seen an intentional on field tanking was the Eagles this past season. And we saw how that went. Lost the locker room and lost his job. Coaches and players almost always want to win.
-
Well our 2nd and 3rd string QB's wouldn't be likely to make many NFL rosters.

Good article. I like the thought process on wanting versatility, especially as the league transitions to an 18 game schedule(all but an inevitability IMO). Injuries and having quality depth are going to get more magnified the more games are added. That was actually why I was shocked they didn't take Slater at 8. I definitely don't see any long term answers at LT on our roster currently but hopefully we won't be in the kind of shape we were last season when Okung went down. That goes with the OL as a whole. Those injuries along the OL really started to hurt a lot the deeper into the depth chart we had to go. I don't think our starting OL will be appreciably better this season but at least we won't have that cliff like drop off we had last when the bench guys started to play. That was rough.
