Yeah, we are not going to be high on the list for veteran players that want to win. Maybe guys looking for a paycheck. We have to build the team before we can make ourselves a destination for "win now" guys.

Could Panthers be trading for a kicker?
kungfoodude replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Well we got sold the idea that a sport psychologist would fix him. I distinctly remember some of the Huddle buying into that hogwash, in spite of his entire college and NFL career performances. They did bring in another kicker that promptly got shown shown door early in camp. -
Highly unlikely. I would think he isn't coming back unless it is for a starting role and probably for a contending team.

Yeah, I mean, I am not saying there isn't any value but I don't find the depth of preseason reps to be anything I am worried about how it will impact his overall season here. And, credit to him for the joke he made in the press conference, but he does have plenty of experience getting hit. Not lacking in those reps. I am sure we just aren't going to agree about this issue but I just don't really find enough fault in limiting his reps in the preseason that I think it will ultimately matter. Definitely not what I personally would have done were I the head coach, but Rhule wants to roll that way so it just is what it is.

He technically took a discount to be here his first contract. We will see how that works out for contract #2

Yeah but you are kind of making my point for me with the second half of your post. I am not concerned about his lack of preseason reps for that very reason. He's either gonna be the same bust he has always been or he'll work out. That would happen if he missed the preseason due to injury, illness, hold out, whatever this weird situation is, etc. This is where I fundamentally disagree with the "He's a rookie" crowd. He has been a professional football player for three full seasons. He knows how to go about being a professional football player or he wouldn't have even made it to this point(those guys usually get jettisoned quickly). So, his biggest hurdles are learning our system(has had a full offseason in it) and getting over whatever poo is rolling around in his head that makes him unable to process the field correctly. That would be the case no matter how many reps he takes in preseason games.

Not saying reps don't serve a purpose but it isn't going to make or break a QB's season. Remember last year when we didn't have ANY preseason? Was that why Teddy didn't work out? If anything, it just means it may take a couple of games to shake off some rust. That's about the extent of it. If he doesn't get it by halfway through the year, it will have nothing to do with lack of preseason reps.

I don't see either of those scenarios being linked to the preseason. He's either going to thrive or he won't. Fake games aren't going to determine that. He isn't a rookie.

Yeah, to me this is basically the answer. IF he fails it won't be because he didn't get enough reps in the preseason, it won't be because our OL sucks, it won't be because of Adam Gase....it will be because he just isn't the guy. And that shouldn't be a shock if that indeed does happen. Would I personally have liked to see him more? Absolutely. As a fan, I want to see him play so I can decide if he might be the guy. That said, wouldn't get too high or low on him regardless.....because it's the fuging preseason. After basically week 1, the mere mentions of preseason in any NFL broadcasts, articles, etc are basically nil. Everyone is extremely aware of how little value these games have outside of determining your final roster.

Shits the bed, as in he sucks. Will you blame his failure on lack of preseason reps?

Wait....do we like PFF now?

Well the Huddle isn't a great measuring stick for intelligence. Just read through the various threads talking about how Cam Newton was a terrible passer or we have a top 10 defense in 2021 or Sam Darnold is a rookie, etc, etc.

I think you have to group some of the fans to gage what the honeymoon period will be. I think for the hardcore/long term Pamthers fans, 2022 will start to be when the heat is on. For the bulk of the fans(more casual) it won't be much about a honeymoon period or the seat getting hot, it will be just a steady decrease in fan interest. This still isn't an area with a large and rabid fanbase, so it will be easy for the bulk of the casual fans to just pay attention to other sports. For the media, I think Rhule will start to feel the heat in 2022 if the 2021 season doesn't show much improvement.
-
Let me ask you this, let's say he only gets two series in the next game(not likely but we will roll with this hypothetical) and then he promptly shits the bed as our starter during the 2021 season. Are you gonna blame that on missing reps in the preseason?
-
He is getting reps in practices. I don't see preseason reps as much more meaningful than those. If he fails in 2021, it won't be because he didn't get 30 more reps in preseason games.

Getting a new kicker is our top need and priority as a team, IMO. We can't fix the QB situation or the OL situation or the LB situation. Whatever we would add would likely be mild upgrades at best. Slye will flat out lose us games this season. That has to be remedied.- 63 replies

I don't honestly think it would matter if we played him every single down of the preseason or absolutely no downs in the preseason. I really mean that. He's either gonna be a disaster or it will work out. Reps in the preseason aren't going to change who he is. People are getting caught up in this complete myth about him being a rookie QB. He isn't. He is a 3 year NFL veteran. Outside of simply adjusting to what we are doing offensively, he is most likely going to be the player he is. Preseason reps aren't going to save him or break him.
