Talk to me about the Saints. What do you know?
kungfoodude replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
I know that I hope they can't field a team this Sunday due to COVID and we get an easy and injury free W. A win is still a win. -
Christensen and Brown "close to contributing"

It's been about 7-8 offseasons on that unit so far. -

I wouldn't say I am admitting defeat. Just generally perplexed by what their actual plan is for the OL. I can see the plan for other areas of the team but the OL I just can’t(outside the Moton signing). Let's hope it all works out. -

I have no idea if they are serviceable or not. They have a combined 0 offensive snaps in the NFL so far. I get that it's always a struggle to build a line but we struggle more than most, IMO. I would like to eventually end that. We have had good and great offensive lines in our franchise history. -

I wouldn't say "ignoring" I would say largely dumpster diving at the moment(FA and the draft). That's certainly one strategy but it's a more difficult path to follow to get where you want to be. Hey, it's possible they are hip to things the rest of the league isn't and these are All-Pro guys. We will see. -

Maybe. The future will tell us how they feel. Another season of neglect and it will probably be as much info as we need to say otherwise. Perhaps OL is literally just low on their list of priorities and we will get to it eventually. Not the way I would ever build a football team but it is what it is if we end up where we need to in the end. -

Paying Moton was a good start. Drafting BC and Brown are TBD. They may prove to make our FO/staff look like geniuses or be further evidence they don't have any clue how to evaluate offensive lineman. We'll know in the next couple of seasons. -
We don't have any clue what we are doing at kicker. That's the honest truth.

I am concerned the biggest issue is that either we just don't consider OL a major priority(yet) or our franchise simply does not evaluate them very well. There aren't many explanations for why we have made the moves we have made the past two seasons(or the past decade). I guess we'll find out what the story is the next couple of seasons. -

He was not the best by a wide margin. We signed him anyway. Remember that was an initial flurry signing which was why a lot of the NFL pundits scratched their heads at the timing and contract(this goes for Erving too). -

Something that was known when we signed him by most of the league. -

That's drafting for need versus BPA. Our needs are extreme so it does make more sense to draft BPA, IMO. In truth, there is no "pure" BPA drafting, because you don't want to end up with 5 straight WR's or some other goofy poo. IMO, Slater is who I would have drafted because the need was higher and I liked him more as a prospect. We will see how that all turns out.

Sure, just as much as if you don't have any pass rush, having elite CB's isn't going to accomplish much. It's acknowledged that one elite player doesn't make a team. We all know that. The point is that it is literally generally accepted wisdom that LT is a FAR more critical position than CB. The reasons stated in my previous post lay out why that is even more so the case in the modern era of the NFL. This doesn't mean that CB is important but it isn't as important as LT.
-
You do understand that the reason you spend on a high quality tackle is that the more time you have to pass, the easier it is to get open? Even Jalen Ramsey will struggle to cover for 5+ seconds. Not to mention, CB's have been the biggest recipient of the rule changes against them to push offense. Also, the LT is protecting the absolute most important piece of a successful, modern NFL offense.....YOUR QUARTERBACK.

Watched a chunk of that game and a little of both. The Green Bay OL was down a lot of talent and they had to deal with a lot of pressure and DL penetration. That could be the case for us, as well. They definitely don't seem to completely trust Jameis. We may be able to him frazzled. -
This will be a good measuring stick for where we are early in the season. If we get smoked like GB did, might be back to the drawing board for a few games to adjust what we are doing. If we play well or even win, maybe we can claw our way to something significant. Either way, the Saints and their fuging fans eat a giant bag of dicks.
-
Yeah, I think they know that offense is at least a portion based on smoke and mirrors at the moment. The weaknesses in the OL are being covered up by scheme and CMC. As many weapons as we have on offense, we may have some fatal flaws on that side of the ball. We will see what it looks like in a few weeks.
-
Technically we already had a track record of that last year. If you look at CMC in limited action last season, we used him a LOT. It will be interesting to see if we basically roll with the Rivera era level of usage. I definitely get he is our best offensive player and we pay him a ton of money.....but it is rare for ANY NFL RB to last with a high level of usage over time. We have to eventually do a better job of managing his wear and tear. Maybe he is an outlier and can sustain this but that isn't something I would personally bank on as a head coach. This isn't college football where you have four years to use a player up and then on to the next. You have to try to protect your franchise players for the duration of their tenure with the team. They don't grow on trees.
-
Well, you are in a really small minority in that regard. I doubt you see many in the NFL that would agree, either.
-
I don't think there is much risk of Slye becoming an All Pro kicker. But you need to be sure the replacement is better.
