Rapoport and Pelissero talk head coach openings
kungfoodude replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's always tough to be the OC under a coach that is perceived as being the offensive guru. It's hard to get much credit. -
Players will bitch about that. A lot of then don't want more pads. That will have to be an NFL mandated thing. Sort of like those insanely goofy bobblehead things that certain positions were wearing in training camps on their helmets. Well the data shows that they reduce instances of concussions pretty dramatically. I have no doubt you will see something like that be mandatory at some point in time. And then the players and fans will throw a shitfit because they don't like change.

Harbaugh to Carolina Makes Too Much Sense...

Agreed but that aspect of "final say" is pretty important. And some of those relationships aren't as collaborative. We have definitely heard plenty of those stories, even in our own organization. -

Eh.....that's a Reid disciple, so I think that is a lot closer to a collaborative thing than a GM/HC division. -

I haven't reached that point yet. I am seeing how this next coaching hire works out. I want that to be the case but I know it can get worse. There is more than one example of that in NFL history. We just have to hope Tepper is capable of understanding his weaknesses and correcting them. If not....we are fuged until he sells us or passes away. Neither of those being something that is likely to happen quickly. -

I mean....if we set a floor lower than Rhule with our next hire.....buckle up, it's gonna be a long, long next decade or two. -

Yeah and he was reportedly skewered by other owners for the Rhule contract. Also reportedly embarrassed he made the decision. IF that is true, he might be a little gun shy this time. We will see. Harbaugh is a very intriguing option. The whale in the head coaching market, really. -

Okay, I wasn't aware he had that. Especially with a guy like Schneider being there. Which, in reality, even complete control is still a collaborative effort. Being a full time HC and full time GM is too big of a job for anyone, really. Fitterer already signed up with that as his deal so I doubt there would be much of an adjustment there. -

I think something we all need to immediately throw out the window is what he did in college. That applies to his previous and current college head coaching gigs. College football so vastly different that you may as well consider it Major League Soccer. It genuinely has absolutely nothing to do with NFL success(or lack thereof). -

Technically, Carroll doesn't have complete control in Seattle but I get what you mean. I am just not sure Harbaugh is the guy I want with complete control. I am not convinced that is a good idea. -
Well, there are very real business decisions that have to be made about it. It will seem callous but it is reality. I get that the NFL has a very well earned "evil" tag attached to themselves but we all tune in watch this entertainment and the show must go on eventually. Or perhaps both teams should be given the option to forfeit the game. That would work, as well.

I really don't think it's going to boil down to money. It's going to be who meets whatever personnel or FO demands that Harbaught has and what is the better situation for him. Any of these teams interested will pay whatever he wants. -

Yeah, you can't pursue Harbaugh blindly. He may have conditions that just make him not an option for us, even if he is generally the best possible coach available. -

Well there are plenty of cunty head coaches(or just coaches in general) in the NFL. What Harbaugh was able to do with those teams was pretty great. If we eliminate all asshole HC's that might narrow the pool more than we want. -

I think if you go Harbaugh it's with the full knowledge that he is probably here at most 5-6 years. But, if you get a ring in that timespan, it was worth it. Or, really, if we are a consistent 10+ win team. At least then we are a very attractive option for the next round of coaching hires. I do think he will wear out his welcome no matter where he goes. -

The concern is that he might be a "complete control" coach again. If that is the case, I am not sure I want him. He is easily the most accomplished coach available this cycle but we just got over that kind of thing. I don't think I want to make that mistake again. -
That is one of those unknowns that will remain that way until someone talks. It would be nice to know if it was just a case of him being driven off for a shitty reason.
-
Well, Reddick also might not have wanted to stay here at all and no offer we made may have been worth it to him.

The problem is that sort of compensation is what top tier QB's have been trading for, so it's very hard to justify keeping Burns given that haul. And I say that as a guy that likes Burns and doesn't want to get rid of him. That was basically as much as prime Khalil Mack was traded for and while I love Burns, he isn't nearly as dominant as prime Mack was. As the old saying goes, they made us an offer we couldn't refuse and....well.....we refused.

We don't KNOW much of anything that Tepper did or didn't do unless he has said it. As for Fields, maybe that is true he likes him but maybe Rhule the con man conned him into something else. Or maybe he just let them do their thing and didn't interject at all. We have no idea. All I am saying is that his personality from what I have seen reminds me of a micromanaging type, which leans towards meddling. I have no idea whether that is truly the case nor do you. That's just my read on Tepper the man from limited inputs.

We don't know that he has or hasn't directly meddled. We just hear rumors about it. It's not a reality TV show, some things we don't learn, some things we learn eventually and some are just whispers that aren't ever confirmed. He strikes me as a meddling type. His personality suggests it. Could be wrong about that but we do hear rumors about him being directly involved and we do see him being pretty involved in some of the Panthers own videos. Ultimately what level is hard for us to definitely say.
