Sounds like what Martin did with Song of Ice and Fire. Its like a mystery/political/historical fiction fused with a light tapestry of fantasy. Very gritty adult fiction. There's a joke between myself and my friends that he really wanted to write some porn, and disguised it as fantasy. The sex scenes are not graphic though. Dragonlance was awesome when I was 12! But Forgotten Realms was much better for tabletop campaigns.

Yep and I was the same age when I read Dragonlance. Hmmmm, maybe Raistlin is the fantasy genres greatest sin. Kind of too close to call there.

And the greatest sin of the fantasy genre is Drizzt.

I read it before I read any other fantasy, so it was new to me.

Dry is putting it nicely. Bland and predictable would be more appropriate.

Don't read Song of Ice and Fire then. The first half of the first book is really boring.

The first 6 books are really fun.
