Canes offer sheet Jesperi Kotkaniemi (MTL)
GamecockSmitty4 replied to GamecockSmitty4's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
A late first and third for a 21 year old, former 3rd overall pick that has pretty solid advanced metrics is a fair value. The overpay in $$ for a single year is what it takes to pull a Madden and "force" the trade because there's no reason for the Canadiens to accept a fair trade. I guarantee you that Eric Tulsky was consulted before signing this offer sheet. -
Keep an eye on the Cowboys and Israel Mukuamu. I think he makes the team but he's on the bubble just due to numbers. He could be a great development FS option.

I'm not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me? -
Horrible to say, but I love watching the punt team!

I don't have a good way to show it from my phone but straight from NFL.com. Charlton = 46.3/40.8 Koch = 45.3/40.1 career average -

It will be interesting to see his development regardless of if he is in MTL, CAR, or somewhere else. Keep in mind Turbo was not all that great in his early years either and really didn't take the next step until he came to Raleigh. Kotkaniemi may just be a slower development guy too. -

Charlton's NET and gross avg last year was higher than Koch's career averages so not sure what you're getting on about bud. -

Agreed. Pierre Lebrun even mentioned that the Canes tried to trade for him before signing the offer sheet so it's not like they did this for a Joe Schmoe. Bold move but really not a loss either way. -

No but he's a 21 year old former 3rd overall pick and a Finn at that. Worst case is you overpay for a year and give up a late first and third and fill your 3rd line with a high upside play. Heck, he may even play up to his potential and then you have his RFA rights and that's easily worth it. If he doesn't play up to his value you can let him walk or negotiate a long term deal next year at market value. And, if the Canadiens match (I'd call it 50/50 but honestly have no idea) they overpay and have to offer more than that next year as a RFA and Canes lose nothing and screw over MTL for playing that game with Aho. -

Didn't realize it at first but even Waddell's comments in the press release is the same as Montreal's when they signed Aho just with the name swapped. Not to mention the Canes announced it on Twitter in French. This is next level. And if MTL doesn't accept, we get Kotkaniemi on a 1 year deal to fill the LW hole and lose a (likely) late 1st and 3rd. -
1 year offer sheet for $6.1M $20 signing bonus. Literally, 20 dollar bill. Same number as Sebastian Aho. This is 100% a troll move by the Canes because of the Habs offer sheet to Aho a couple years ago and I love it.

Mr/Ms 07579394, ever heard of outkicking your coverage? There is an optimal height:distance ratio for a punt to ensure a minimal return. Net punt yards is more important than gross punt yards. -
Svechnikov extended for 8 years

No way we have Slavin, Skjei, Gardiner, and Cole on the left side to start the year. I still think Skjei is the headliner for a big trade (Tarasenko is still my bet) or Gardiner goes out on a salary dump. -
8 years $7.75 AAV. That's honestly a great AAV for that term.

I went crazy watching that. For the record, that was NBA vet Michael Beasley he went around and NBA vet Kenneth Faried that he absolutely annihilated. Also, I have a strong feeling that Kai will spend most of the season in Greensboro. I think he could definitely help the Hornets now off the bench but getting a ton of minutes in the G-League may be better for his development. Keep in mind he has not played basketball for very long and was not a starter in college. With consistent playing time I think he will develop into a monster. Specifically, I think his defensive game could use some work. He's got all the tools but you could tell he was a little slow reading plays and that comes with reps.

Make sure that contract states you will catch the pass. Drop the ball every time. Tom gets pissed. You offer him an out for 120k. Profit.

One year deal per Shams. Really hoping this is for a 3rd guard role. I don't care much for him as a backup PG.
-
Definitely agree on 1PP. The more I think about it the more I agree with you about 1RD but not quite 100% on that one.
-
Fair enough. DeAngelo could honestly slide in at any of the 3 RHD spots. I'm just not sold on him defensively to be a top pair guy. But I guess that's what Slavin is for. He definitely hid Hamilton's deficiencies.
-
I expect Svech to come in around 6.5 for 3 years if they go the bridge route. And I fully anticipate Skjei, Nino, or Gardiner (+ prospect(s)) to go in any trade. If it's one of the defensemen, all spots are filled. If it's Nino, that just opens another forward spot to fill, preferably on the cheapish end. As it stands right now I think the roster looks something like: Svech - Aho - Turbo Nino - Trocheck - Necas Martinook - Staal - Fast Lorentz - Stepan/Drury - Leivo Slavin - Pesce Skjei - Bear Cole - DeAngelo Gardiner The LHD is stacked and very expensive, especially for Gardiner to be an extra. That's why I really think we use Gardiner or Skjei in a trade for a LW (ie Tarasenko). That would also offset 4 (Gardiner) or 5.25 million (Skjei) of the large contract we take on. In all honesty, I think Skjei+ for Tarasenko makes too much sense even though I would like to keep Skjei.

Stepan signed. There's definitely something brewing because there's way too much cap space available. If I'm not mistaken, we were operating with only around 2.5M available last season. So seems pretty apparent to me they are leaving a lot of money open to absorb a large contract. I still think Tarasenko is the target.

Mitch hit this one out of the park. I just hope people don't get their expectations too high on Kai Jones early on. I expect him to back up Plumlee for a little while and give us some energy on the 2nd unit and take a year or two to develop into a starter. But it's pretty apparent that his ceiling is the roof (lol). And he's going to be so much fun even when he only is contributing energy minutes and some high flying dunks. Not to mention that Bouknight has the makings of a star. His offense is going to be sooooo much better with NBA spacing. This dude is so smooth and just knows how to get buckets. His off-ball game when he rotates beside LaMelo is going to be insane.
-
Plenty enough to absorb all of Tarasenko's contract. I also fully expect to trade Gardiner for a much cheaper 3rd pair/extra LD at some point (possibly during season). That could free up close to 4M depending on who comes back.
-
Nick Ritchie will be a UFA on Wednesday. He's a good bigger LW. The Athletic says that trade interest is dwindling for Tarasenko and it might be down to two teams- one being us.

Confirmed by Pierre Lebrun that the Canes made an offer to Brandon Saad. Saad is weighing his options.
