    To be fair, Person wasn't the only one saying that. We had some other very reliable sources say the same thing. Somewhere in there, someone's mind changed. I suppose it could have been the addition of Fitterer but I don't have a solid enough grip on when things changed to be certain.

    Lance or no Lance, I also doubt you're going to see the Panthers building a system around a quarterback again. It's more likely they just acquire someone they believe can run what they have.

    I'm wondering if one of the folks who's better at cap stuff than I am has an idea about where this puts us. I know we can't say exactly because the NFL still hasn't made a firm ruling on the cap itself, and that affects the franchise values.

    Even those who advocate drafting Lance generally agree that he's gonna need a lot of reps to be an NFL quarterback.

    How many teams will have enough cap to offer him what he wants though? Free agency is gonna be reeeeeally complicated this year.

    Part of being good at your job is knowing when to tell the person above you they're full of sh-t. Marty never gave any indication that he was smart enough to do that.

    It was a damn good draft. If you're looking for the best draft the Panthers have had, it's probably between this one and Seifert's last draft in 2001.

    Like I said, it explains a lot. Gantt said many times that as far as Richardson was concerned, Hurney was GM for life if he wanted to be. He would never have been fired if he hadn't basically volunteered to fall on the sword. The fact that he was willing to work without a contract lent to that idea as well.

    And with our record being exactly 500 over the tenure of his ownership, it could also be said that he got exactly what he earned.

    Definitely. Of course, having an owner who judged the quality of the draft primarily by the first round probably made it easier to be a mediocre GM.
