It's basically the equivalent of betting on yourself. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Ed Dodds has been doing it as a GM candidate for years. He's said repeatedly that he only wants to take the right job because he wants it to be his only GM job, but he still gets interviewed on pretty much an annual basis. Johnson might feel the same. Or maybe he just wants to finish the story in Detroit.
