A big part of it for me is the improvement of Young. He's miles ahead of where he used to be. Canales? I like him, but my judgment on how good a coach he can be is still pending.
-
It didn't mean anything in those seasons either. Neither does the incompetence of prior coaching and personnel staffs mean anything to our current situation. The quarterback we saw at the end of last season was perfectly fine and has a shiny new weapon who looked just fine on Friday. It's too early to know anything.

Media touting tonight as The Shedaur Show
Mr. Scot replied to Puresteel55's topic in Carolina Panthers
Remember when Anthony Richardson was about to set the world on fire? -
Cam Newton looked like refried horse sh-t in what was, at that time, the "dress rehearsal" game (preseason three) of his rookie season. Two weeks later, we were all thinking a decade of glory lay ahead of us.
-
I expect that this time of year. Hell, a ref said their ruling had been "conformed"
-
I've seen over fifty preseasons from various teams and can't think of a single time they were strongly predictive of anything. Heck, even the first few weeks of the season can be illusory.
-
I wasn't a fan of retaining Evero but I guess Canales believes he can improve. We'll see
-
I don't see how folks left this game without feeling excited after seeing Young and McMillan work.
-
You wouldn't know it by that rambling commentary about him near the end.
-
Newton's early coaching didn't do him any favors. Rivera, Shula et al decided to adapt the offense to who he was in college rather than try and adapt him to being an NFL passer. They had some success but it wasn't the ideal approach. Once Norv Turner arrived, he did what they should have been doing from the beginning and showed how good an NFL passer Newton could have been, but by then a lot of time had been wasted and wear and tear received. I'd love to have seen what could have been accomplished if they'd handled him the right way from the beginning.
-
It's also a bit premature to crown him as a star. I'm not convinced of anything yet.

The only part of this post with relevance...
-
Just curious: Has Smitty actually heard of JJ Jansen?
-
Much better return by Etienne this time. Shame about the penalties though.
-
So far I'm seeing just what I expected: a guy that excites people with highlight reel plays but still isn't consistently good yet. We'll see...
-
Good throw, even better catch
-
Ja... Len... Coker
-
Don't know that I'd have tried that pass
-
Okay, don't see that happen often
-
No disrespect to Smitty (I get what he meant) but "Throw Up Football" doesn't sound like a very fun game
-
Nice! And a Jimmy Horn sighting as well
-
That was a good pass. Still needs to be more consistent overall.
