The unfortunate thing there is that he was also the guy who hired the scouts that evaluated the prospects. Marty had zero experience as a scout or talent evaluator before he was elevated to a job where you really really need to have those skills. Richardson making him GM was like taking a kid that worked in the mailroom and making him CEO of a major corporation.

Fair. Ron would have known Cowden from his time here, though. Seriously, even last night after we heard the story, I still believed Washington would hire someone else and make Marty a consultant or something. Then I wake up to this...wow.

Albert Breer covered it yesterday. Tepper wanted somebody that bought a different skill set. The analytics guys that were included in the search were his choice. Matt Rhule wanted a talent evaluator that could help him build a roster. After they went through the first set of candidates, they couldn't find anyone they agreed on so they decided to "reset" and add a couple of new interviews. One was a cap guy (Omar Khan) and the other was a scout (Fitterer). They chose the scout.

Tepper didn't force Rhule to take one of his guys at GM. Just the opposite, in fact. That gives me hope.

Our current GM has never made a bad draft pick for the Panthers.

Rivera was always the guy who took forever to realize things that other people knew in short order. Guess this is just another one for the list.

I do wonder what happens to Kyle Smith now.

Here's the biggest deal to me in all this... They interviewed Ryan Cowden. Ryan Cowden... The guy is a front office rock star with the Titans and loads of people think he's going to make a great GM, plus Rivera should know him from his time here. Heck, I was hoping we'd interview him. But with that said, it's one thing to pass over Ryan Cowden for a guy like Scott Fitterer. Passing on Ryan Cowden to hire Marty Hurney?! Yikes!

I mean, I suppose they could have a chance. They do have some competent front office people like Kyle Smith. Of course, there's speculation that Smith might leave if he gets passed over for the GM job.
