Cost of trading for an additional 1st rounder
SteveSmithTD89 replied to Martin's topic in Carolina Panthers
Going by the value charts next years 1st and our 4 this year get us close point wise. Next years 1st and 3rd gets us there too. Issue becomes if its obviously for a QB. All charts and values go right out the window if a QB is involved. -
I dont see it. Its a one year deal. If we needed the cap space to get a guy like Watson, Armstead etc then maybe. However we are currently sitting with the most cap space in the NFL with few premier players still left. I think it would be more likely we keep him on the roster outright. I have a hard time seeing the value in parting with a player just to dump Sam unless a mid round pick is coming back.

New contract expected to make him highest paid receiver in the league.
-
And you couldn't do that with 20 million? And based on how he treated his son both before and after he was born Im gonna go ahead and assume that hes not too concerned about their wellbeing over his own.
-
Based on Raps last tweet about them offering to make Hill "one of" the top paid receivers I imagine they probably offered him 20/year and he likely wanted Adams money. Honestly be tough to split hairs over 8 mil a year if you're looking at playing with Mahomes/Reid or going to Zac Wilson/Tua... One of those isn't like the other. I dont blame the chiefs though. Good as he is now he's 28 and unlike other smaller stature guys like Smitty who could still out muscle any DB his speed and quick twitch are his primary assets. How long into his 30s till he's a shell of himself? TY Hilton, DeSean Jackson, Mike Wallace, Heyward-Bey, all straight line speed guys that vanished pretty quickly... Now granted Hill is far superior to all of them but 20ish million a year is a big risk, especially if they could get two firsts like they're looking for.

This pro day really enforces that there is a lot to love with both Willis and Pickett. Whoever we end up with I'm very excited for especially if Rhule takes a hands off approach to the offensive staff he's assembled and let's them develop and coach.

Im a huge Teddy fan. Born and raised in Louisville, my 11 year old lab is named Teddy... it was everywhere on every news and media outlet as soon as it came out he was going to do the pro day with out his gloves, everyone had a bad feeling what would happen. He gambled and the results speak for themselves. That decision is a big reason why Bortles went 4th overall.

Teddy Bridgewater lol

I've been driving the Baker train for the past week or so... I'm all in on Willis and Cam, go get an LT - whatever Armstead wants, pay it.
-
McAdoo sitting there with a big smile on his face rocking back and forth....
-
IF we could secure a long term LT whether that is BC making the step or signing Armstead I would be very interested in either Willis or Pickett at 6. Lots to like with both of these young men.

Was my primary concern as well. I think QB School did a break down on it last year. That said he apparently absolutely crushed the interview portion of the combine though and left a great impression with a lot of coaches. Came across as very coachable. The raw physical talent, strong character and that report would let me easily pull for the kid and get behind him if he is the pick at 6. Looking forward to watching this one and seeing how much of a presence we have here today.

Id argue Ryan was throwing to Kyle Pitts and a punch of practice squad players on a team, that now without him has the worst roster in the NFL. Ryan also has the respect that comes with an MVP and has missed 3 games in 15 years. I wouldn't want Ryan for a 3rd but could at least see why the trade was made. Bakers 3.1% doesn't scare me nearly as much as he's a year removed from a 1.6% in 2020 after playing through injuries last season. I'll concede Jimmy also was fighting a thumb injury and if memory serves a few of his interceptions were in that last month stretch. I just don't know that I see enough to determine that Jimmy is "much" better than Baker. Darnold? Absolutely, no arguments here. Without knowing what each would cost I can't make an absolute decision but I'd pass on either of them if they're wanting more than a 4th/5th.

He also passed for 20 TDs which was the same amount as Taylor fuging Heinicke (20) and two more than Teddy Bridgewater (18) in one more game. That TD figure also falls dramatically short of every other QB you mentioned with Mahomes (37) Herbert (38) Allen (36) Rodgers (37) and even Tannehill (21) Garoppolo also threw 12 Interceptions and his interception rate was good for 23rd in the league behind the obvious superstar QBs like Davis Mills, Daniel Jones, Jared Goff, Ben Roethlisberger, Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagavailoa, Teddy Bridgewater and a rookie Mac Jones. The two games against the Packers - in 2020 he was 6/8 for 77 (SEVENTY SEVEN) yards. Last year he went 11/19 for 131 yards and a pick at the goal line that took points off the board in a one score game. Lets quit with the revisionist history. The defense and special teams with the blocked punt for a TD won that game. You can win games with a guy like Garropolo but he is not an elite QB and has done absolutely nothing to warrant being in the conversation with any of the guys you listed (admittedly I don't think Tannehill does either) there are also legitimate concerns over his durability. You praise his one full season while ignoring the fact he has not stayed healthy in 84% of them. Now, at age 30 (31 by mid season) he has a shoulder surgery and wont be ready for offseason installments in a new system with new receivers? And he is gonna cost 25 million for one year before we have to commit big money long term/tag him? I could maybe get on board with a 6th or future 5th but anything more than that I am firmly out.

Panthers hold prelim talks with Mayfield reps
SteveSmithTD89 replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
Just for fun here's 3 QBRs the last 3 seasons. A) 2018 - 61.8 2019 - 70.5 2020 - 63.7 B) 2018 - 51.2 2019 - 54.2 2020 - 65.5 C) 2018 -45.9 2019 - 45.6 2020 -32.9 Player A is Deshaun Watson, Player B is Baker Mayfield, Player C is Sam Darnold. Let me be clear, I am only driving this train based on the presumed low cost associated with a trade. If the Browns are wanting anything more than a future 4th/this years 5th I'm out. Talent is there to take a flyer in a down year for the NFC and as sad as it is... Baker would be our best QB since 2017. -

Now do 2020 when he wasn't playing 12 games on what should have been a season ending shoulder injury. -
I'm gonna be honest... I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. In the event that you aren't... I hope you're aware how absurd it is to latch on to something he did 5 years ago when he was 20 and try and use that to claim he is immature now. People do in fact grow up. I'm sure you never did anything in your college years you look back on now and think "God that was stupid" You can both not like and not want Baker on the team, that's fine. But this is starting to feel an awful lot like the people who would poo on Cam 10 years after the laptop incident.
-
I mean considering that David Carr was in a Panthers uni at one point... Don't tell me you don't remember the saucy flip for a first down he had?
-
If he's so immature why didn't we hear a peep out of him during the Odell saga? There is 0 chance it costs pick 6. You're looking at a future 4 AT THE MOST to outbid everyone. If Seattle doesn't want him it will be even less than that. Its one year on a fully guaranteed 18 mil, same as Darnold. Schefter came out and said one team that was in talks asked Cleveland for a pick just to take the contract. Hes gonna be dirt cheap. Perfect buy low opportunity.
-
Realized it as soon as I wrote it out...
-
And then there were 2... Baker, Jimmy G or Pick 6 There are options available and the longer we wait the cheaper those trades get.
-
Which conveniently only comes out AFTER the Watson trade. That is 100% a leak from the Browns front office and more than likely not true just being used as justification for the trade after they've been dragged on the internet not only for acquiring Watson but structuring his contract in a way he faces little to no penalty for his inevitable suspension. The takes just a month ago were praising Baker for his grit and toughness playing through his injury that should have ended his season in week 2. Belive the exact quote from a teammate was "You could cut his dick off and he wouldn't fuging say poo" I'll take that attitude every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Saints resigning Jameis 2 years-28 mill
SteveSmithTD89 replied to NCTHFL0567's topic in Carolina Panthers
Because its another domino off the board. Every other QB gets that much cheaper... Also means the saints are hitched to him at least one more year and idk about you but Winston does not strike even the slightest bit of fear into me. He didn't look good against us in Tampa and he sure as hell didnt look good at all against us last year. -
Do want. Very much so. Love the cost is only going down. We don't HAVE to have him, could easily draft Pickett or Willis at 6 and sign Duane Brown. Browns can't cut him. We hold the cards here for a change. End of the day, as I've said in several threads - We are a playoff team with Baker Mayfield. He instantly at worse becomes a top 6 QB in the NFC. On top of that he truly sets us for BPA at 6: Want to draft a top 3 LT and slide them inside at LG for a year? You can. Want to take Willis at 6 and let him sit for a year and go the Alex Smith/Mahommes route? You can. One of the top two DEs fell because all 3 LTs plus Kyle Hamilton/any QB went top 5? You can. Best case Baker lights it up and we have 3 more years of Franchise tag control to negotiate a long term deal or are in position to flip him for picks if we took Willis and he's ready to roll. Worst case he flops, we suck, Rhule is gone Baker is gone, Darnold is gone and we have either a solid team for a rookie in 2023 to slide into or Willis/Pickett entering their second season ready to take over.

Matty Water to the Colts for a 3rd rounder.
SteveSmithTD89 replied to NCTHFL0567's topic in Carolina Panthers
One more QB domino off the board. Winston to the Saints I would assume? Mariota to ATL picking up steam... Really only leaves us and Seattle for Baker Mayfield/Jimmy G. The less suitors there are the cheaper thjs trade gets. Wanted two seconds for Jimmy G? A 3rd for Baker? Here's a future 5th. Better yet, why don't you send me a 4th and the QB for a future 5th since we're eating the salary and the dead cap means you cant release them... Make that trade and have another team who want to trade ahead of ATL and Seattle for a qb? We'll take this years 1,2 and a future 1 to make it happen. PLENTY of options available and this only helps the Panthers. Also, Matty Ice - GET THE fug OFF MY FIELD!!
