I think we're probably fine at WR as long as Olsen can keep getting open, and Ginn keeps hauling in those deep passes. I'm not convinced the Norwood trade was entirely about getting lots of production this year, but for greater depth and grooming someone who we wanted to draft last year. Maybe he'll step up this year, maybe not. But remember, at the time we got Norwood, Funchess had hardly played due to injuries. We really needed another body on the WR corps, especially a guy who seems like he can handle the physical part of the game and go up and high point catches, all of which Norwood is reputed to be able to do. Lets see how Norwood gets used after the bye. I trust our F/O in drafting, and the Norwood pick was basically an extra 2014 draft pick up.

When we first picked up Tillman there was a lot of concern about his age & injury history. Look how much he has brought to the team... Solid play, getting the DBs to FOCUS ON THE BALL, teaching the Peanut Punch, his coaching and mentoring of the young guys. Hopefully Allen will do the same for the DLine

THIS.

Ah, true... hadn't thought of that.

Seriously, given that we have all been talking today about what a fantastic trade Greg O. was for this team... I hope this proves to be another great player acquisition from Chicago!

Wow. So much for all the "fans" who complain that our F/O never does anything to address roster needs. TWO trades this year. Quite a surprise. So who gets cut?!?!

Panthers have 3 defensive players on the PFF best player at each position team this week: KK, J-NO, Coleman. SWEET https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/09/21/the-best-players-at-every-position-for-week-2/

Think by early he meant the first few drives of the game. It's been taking Cam and his receivers awhile each game to get in a rhythm.

The vets may not be "balling out" or beating the young guys on the PFF stat sheet, but they sure add an important component to the team. TD helping keep J No's passion in check. His leadership when Luke went out last week - including his awesome interception to help seal the game... Tillman teaching J No and others the Peanut Punch and helping our secondary be really focused on getting the ball and forcing turnovers... CJ providing key leadership on the Dline with Star out. Cotch helping shore up our young wideouts and getting the clutch TD in game 1 and grinding out those extra few yards for the tough 1st Down. Kalil anchoring the Oline... These things don't show up on the PFF stats, but I think they play a huge role in the WIN stats. Got some interesting research on rookie starting % and win % that I'm almost ready to post. Keeping the team young and playing rookies & 1st years is important to get them seasoned. But too many rookie starters generally = less wins. Stay tuned. I'll have a new blog entry & forum topic on this soon.

Yeah, we had a very poor 1st quarter on offense. But once we got going, it was nice, especially the 2nd quarter. That's where we've been dominating on offense. Here's the breakdown of our offensive production by quarter for both games: Also, I noticed we had a LOT more "big plays" on offense both running & passing in the Houston game than against Jacksonville. It was 10 big plays against Houston (7 rushing / 3 passing) vs. 4 big plays against JAX (3 rushing / 1 passing). ["Big plays" are defined as 10+ yard rush, 25+ yard pass.] They were key in creating scoring opportunities.

I admit I don't really know the ins & outs of how PFF grades work, especially for the defense. How signifcant a factor is TD's late hit penalty in his overall low score? In any case, the D played well. Houston only had two big plays in the entire game. (They capitalized and scored on both drives with the big plays). At one point in the first half we forced Houston to turn the ball over on downs and then punt the next 5 drives.I'd love to see the PFF scores broken down by half. We did a pretty good job of keeping Houston out of Carolina territory in the first half. The second half Houston obviously made some adjustments, settled down and began to move the ball better. The heat could have been a factor wearing down both Ds. We too moved the ball pretty well in the 2nd half...You can see my "game at a glance" tables illustrating all the drives of the game for both teams here:

Jags just beat Miami. Nice. 23-20. Makes our holding them to 9 last week look very nice. Miami's got a good D. ---- More from the Jags game and their win against Miami today, but look what Bortles & Robinson were able to do this week. Which they couldn't do LAST week. Kudos to Josh Norman. This was just tweeted by ESPN: -

It's the NFL. Players get banged up every game. But to my knowledge, we had no player leave the game with an injury who did not return. That is VERY good news for us. -

Perhaps the BEST STAT OF THE GAME which I don't think anyone's mentioned..... If I'm right, I think we got through this with no injuries?!?!?! I have to confess I was cursing up a blue streak when it looked like we were losing both Turner & Cotch early. I was thrilled they came back in and played the rest of the game. Well done. -

By the way, here's a nice stat courtesy of BBR: Houston’s Horrid Ground Game It’s hard to win in the NFL without a run game, and the Texans don’t have one without injured back Arian Foster. They gained just 24 yards on 11 carries in the first half and just 37 more in the second. It’s the eighth time in their last nine regular-season games that the Panthers have held an opponent below 100 rushing yards. It was the first time they’ve done it despite being without LB Luke Kuechly and DT Star Lotulelei. -

Um, major props to our Oline. Remmers might be the MVP. Also, Ginn had some good returns, and that clutch TD. Philly Brown too a beautiful TD catch, and Cotchery a really clutch reception. I don't know why everyone is moaning so much. Sure, there were some bad penalties and some blown plays, but really, there is quite a bit to be encouraged about re: how our offense performed against one of the toughest D's in the league. Too close at the end. Those Kony penalties and that blocked FG were awful. But we won. I'll take ugly. We'll get better. -

Well they're definitely our toughest competition as of this point in the season, but as the reigning NFC South champs and also 2-0, I would say WE'RE the team to beat! -
