Jonathan Jones @jjones9 1m1 minute ago Worst fear for the Panthers: WR Kelvin Benjamin done for the year with a torn ACL, according to @RapSheet Black & Blue Review @BlackBlueReview 38s39 seconds ago #Panthers knew what happened as Rivera was talking after practice. MRI only confirmed it. Question is was MCL torn as well. &%^S%S&&@(#####$%%%*&!

Jeremy, a question. Were all 3 QBs off with their throws? If so, any chance that coaches were trying to work with them on changing something with mechanics that could have put them all off-stride? Or maybe something was going on in camp last night that kept them all from getting enough rest... Just wondering aloud, because if all 3 were throwing poorly, unrelated to defensive pressure, it seems like there must be some broader explanation.

This may deserve a new thread? I'll let someone else post it, if so. But the PFF grades for Friday night's game are out, and are pretty encouraging. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/08/15/grades-for-panthers-bills/ Go Daryl!!!:

It might be interesting to start a new thread on Practice Squad candidates, and particularly any "intelligence" about who's at risk of being claimed by another team if we stash them there. I was just browsing another much inferior site... known here as "derp", and there was a comment thread on Friday's game which turned into a debate over the likely 53 man roster. There's one commenter who seemed pretty knowledgable about our UDFAs and what other teams had shown interest. Here are a few things he wrote which caught my eye: (bold is mine) from here: http://www.derp/2015/8/15/9159795/carolina-panthers-buffalo-bills-final-score-takeaways-cam-newton#321603100 The same commenter also thinks Byrd would be picked up from the PS, though in that comment it seems purely his opinion. So: among Cox, Wegher, Byrd, Ward... who among these are we most "at risk" of losing if we place them on the PS? If anyone has intel, please share it! It's so much fun getting to play imaginary GM and try to craft a perfect roster. But boy, I'm glad I don't have to really make such choices. Gettleman's got a tough job!

Good Jonathan Jones article on the competition between Bersin & Boykin for the 6th (and probably final) WR roster spot. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article31200566.html Excerpt: The article then goes on to give a good analysis of both players' contributions on Friday night.

Here's the pic of Ealy's pressure: Buffalo Bills' Matt Cassel (16) gets pressured by Carolina Panthers' Kony Ealy (94) in the first half of their preseason game at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Friday, August 14, 2015. The Bills led, 14-10 at halftime. David T. Foster III [email protected]

It may not be recorded as a stat, but I seem to recall he got at least 1 (at least partial) QB pressure. I think there was even a pic. of it in the Observer photo gallery. Let me see if I can find it.

One thing on the Bersin / Boykin / Byrd debate. I seem to recall Bersin commenting in a recent interview that he knows the whole playbook. Can play all the WR positions. Not sure whether the other WR candidates also have been learning multiple positions? I know Funchess has, but what about Boykin and Byrd? Certainly I wouldn't expect Byrd to with his size. He wouldn't back up KB for instance, whereas Bersin could... Just more food for thought in the WR position battle. So much fun to have so many interesting receivers to watch and root for.

Turns out he did play, but I don't know how many snaps. There's a picture of him in the Observer photo gallery. Carolina Panthers' Bene' Benwikere (25) helps to brings down Buffalo Bills' Charles Clay (85) in the first half of Friday’s exhibition game. The starting and backup linebackers showed well during the initial outing. David T. Foster III [email protected]

Question: In the game summary by Bill Voth at BBR is this comment: "CB Bené Benwikere, who missed the first week of training camp with a tight hamstring, was back in his No. 1 nickel role." DID Bene actually play? I don't remember hearing his name at all or seeing anyone make any comment on his play? I was thinking he'd been held out due to his hamstring.
-
Don't understand your comment? You hope what changes? You don't think we looked good or you think that the team is not excited? That one of those things needs to change? I think it's too early to say whether we "looked good" overall. Last night was mixed. Some things (Oline!!!) quite encouraging. Other things frustrating. Preseason game 1. Normal. As to "every banner year we looked good in preseason" - not necessarily according to Bill Voth's stats. Several of our banner years we had mixed preseason (2 - 2). Data below are for all our playoff seasons. http://blackandbluereview.com/numbers-and-notes-panthers-vs-bills-preseason-opener/ 1996 2-22003 4-02005 2-22008 2-22013 3-12014 2-2In two seasons we went 4 - 0 in preseason but did NOT have a "banner year." (2004 & 2006) So, hard to place too much significance on pre-season stats. The only fact that came out of Voth's analysis was that we've never made it to the playoffs if we've gone less than .500 in the pre-season.
-
Nice summary... Just FYI: Brandon Williams is still on the PUP list, and I think he missed most (all?) of OTAs too. So he is on the bubble for sure.
-
I haven't looked at the stats yet. Did Mike Brown get any targets or any catch? I don't recall hearing his name, but during the second half, the Bills announcers were ignoring the game on the field when the Panthers were on Offense and talking about junk. A few times they even missed showing the action because they had some graphic up about Bills QB stats. Ugh. Listening to an opposing team's announcers is NOT fun.
-
Any thoughts on WR depth now? KB, Ginn, Funch, Corey Brown, Cotch, Bersin, Boykin, Byrd is how I rank them at the moment. Boykin seemed to hold his own as a WR, but was he on ST? Bersin was... Mostly I'm just so darn thrilled we have Teddy Ginn back in Carolina Blue & Black. Phew. He adds so much to this offense plus the returns.
-
It's nice that all three of our QBs scored, and we got a Gano FG too.
-
Yes, caution re: his hamstring, and the game on turf. They also decided not to risk J. Stew because of the turf and injury risk.
-
WOOHOO. Riverboat. 2 points! LOL that it was Paul Browning making the catch. Our resident Browning fan is gonna crow about this!
-
So, really. The Bills announcers totally ignored the Panthers that entire last drive. They said NOTHING about the game and were talking about some Bills famous person I've never heard of. I have to find a way to get Panthers Network broadcasts. Can't take this.
-
Dammit NFL Network coverage. Bills announcers are talking about everything BUT the Panthers drive. They're ignoring the play on the field. fug I'm paying $100 for this?!?!
-
SURPRISE. Bills announcers on the NFL Network broadcast just said "Panthers have got good special teams" - and then went on to praise Coach Bruce DeHaven. What an amazing thing to hear after last year. Good. Special. Teams. Yes, I hope that's true this year. Certainly there have been a few improvements already evident tonight. But still some strugggles.
-
No, Shaq is not playing tonight. Precautionary for his hamstring, I believe.
-
KELVIN!!!!!!!!! Love you Benji!
-
PLEASE if there's a way sometime in the next few days to watch the Panthers Network version of the broadcast online, can someone message me? I really want to see the game with PANTHERS commentary. This Bills commentary sucks.
-
Damn Bills TV coverage on NFL Network. They don't even mention Panthers names who tackle, etc.
-
Dang. NFL Network is showing the Bills coverage tonight,, not Panthers network. I wasn't sure which they'd show. Last night they showed the Saints coverage and the Packers coverage - both the away teams, so I'd hoped it would be the Panthers coverage. Oh well.
