The Panthers will need about 6-8M for the draft class. Almost all will be the QB and 39. Any pick after 75 or so doesn’t really change much from JAGs signed to the bottom of the roster now. Ridder is making 1.2M/yr and was chosen 75 last year. I think y’all had it figured out.

With 25-30M, it isn’t hard. See the numerous DEs signed in the past 3 years in the 15-18M range, like Reddick. Name the Edge player who is making 20-30M that is below average against the run. Is he really supposed to be paid like a Bosa or TJ Watt. Garrett? He’s not in their class. The positional value of not overpaying for one when you could be better with two very good DEs is the issue. Do better than some random team and long retired players. Burns wouldn’t even start for the Steelers. And that’s before we factor in pick 36 this year, a probable top 10 pick next year, and a possible one in 2025. What positional value do those three picks bring to the table?

Yep. And it’s called I can find 2 DEs for the 25+M/year Burns will want, and still spend the draft picks on other positions. Or use them to trade up and keep your own 1st round picks. But somehow overpaying one player is better than 5 high quality ones instead.

No. DJ was scheduled to have a 24M Cap hit so they gained almost 10M in cap space. No need to make room. Gotta try something. And the cost wasn’t bad. QB roulette sucks. And they are going to have to hit on whatever plan there is for skill positions. But overall, I would have done it and it is big deal to have it done this early.

Carolina eats 14.625M in dead cap this year.

Still doesn’t make sense to me. They aren’t going to find a QB3 cheaper with Corrals “upside”. He was never the answer to a starter, but he’s a better option than any QB3 they can get.

What cap expertise? Being over the cap with a team that has won 17 games in 3 years. And 32M dead cap already for this year. The Saints chickens are bbq-ing right now. And will continue to for many years. All for not even a SB appearance. Now they can’t even get rid of players they want to. And can’t keep the ones they want to. It doesn’t take “expertise” to just leverage every dollar available with no thought of future implications. At least the Saints did it with winning teams and a HOF QB during a SB window. The Panthers do it to win a 6th game if things go well.

Probably because he screwed up so bad with that ridiculous extension. From OTC…. Even though it was not a one year “prove it” deal the Panthers treated it as such and quickly extended Anderson after the season to a new contract worth $14.75 million a season. This would be a disaster for the team as Anderson only had 519 yards in 2021. Rather than paying the original $8 million salary and then letting him walk after a poor season, the new extension saw the team pay $12.5 million in 2021 and then an additional $12.31 million this year. For that extra $16.31 million in cash and cap the Panthers got 6 additional games, 13 receptions, 206 yards, and a touchdown of production.

Had Cam by his 2nd year. Of course. And Fields with slightly lower TDs and INTs, higher completion percentage, and a rushing season that far surpassed anything Cam ever did hasn’t proven worth the 11th? And teams won’t take a chance on that production, in the NFL, over having to pay 3 1sts for a hopeful prospect. These QBs aren’t Elway, Luck, Manning, Trevor. Not close to sure things.

The Bears staff is never going to do it. But thinking teams wouldn’t be trying to get him isn’t realistic. And I would take him over any other option the Panthers have right now.

It would be 3 if you’re going to use the 5th year option on one, you have to on the other. He was more polished than Richardson is now, when he got to GA.

What would be a better option for Carolina, ATL, LV, and others? Anthony Richardson who is way behind where Fields was in college. Will Levi’s if he’s even there Carr at 30-35M/yr Trade 3 1sts for an unknown QB? Field for 2 years at 10M after already showing major improvements and having the 2nd most rushing yards by a QB. Ever. With a team in tank mode. I’m sure ATL would mind bringing him back home. The Panthers paid Sam Darnold more than Fields will make over his entire rookie contract. Plus multiple picks.

I think it was more a positional value decision but l can see both ways. Not signing a G like Daniels(think Corbett, same player and contracts) is the confusing one. With a young QB. Between taking Claypool and giving up Daniels, I’m so glad the Steelers keep an eye on them…lol

Supporting casts are crucial to the discussion when one of the supposed issues for Fields is failure to “elevate” his team like Lawrence. But no one has mentioned that the Bears were in full rebuild/tank mode with 93M in dead cap. That’s why they have about 100M to spend this year. Last year JAX had the 100M and signed players for 260M and 150M guaranteed. Including a 20M/yr WR, an 8M/yr WR, a 9M/yr TE, and a 16M/yr G. Plus a healthy Etienne. A DEF that signed a 15M/yr LB, a 10M/yr DT, a 13M/yr CB, to a DEF that improved from 28th to 12th. The Bears traded Khalil Mack, Robert QUinn, Roquan Smith. Let Daniels walk with plenty of money. And the result was the worst DEF in NFL. And they are really gonna regret trading for Claypool. So how are those situations remotely comparable? By any metric. One team was “all-in” and the other was trying to get through the season to this offseason. You don’t have to dig deep when the answer is plain as day with each teams intentions for the season. As for Hurts, it took plenty of digging to get past a a lot of similar qualities and stats. No doubt Fields has his issues in the pocket. That improves with experience and confidence. But his extra sacks cost 209 yards more than Hurts. But he rushed for 359 more than Hurts. So it’s not like his proven elite trait hasn’t overcome that problem to a degree. Fields didn’t look great this year just like Hurts didn’t last year. He was very much improved. On a team worse than his rookie year by far.

Here’s PFF thru week 12. 10. BRIAN BURNS, CAROLINA PANTHERS Burns has been an ironman for the Panthers this year, leading all edge defenders in snaps (718). Despite that heavy workload, he's been incredibly productive. Burns ranks fourth in the NFL in pressures (53) while also placing second in hurries (34). He’s already recorded double-digit sacks for the first time in his career (10) and is still only 24 years. His lack of ability to stop the run (49.5 PFF run-defense grade) is the only thing keeping him from being higher on this list.

And the ability to move on from a “star” player to strengthen the rest of the team.

Who graded him top 20 against the run? I’d love to see the actual parameters if it even exists. And when did these 4th down “turnovers”occur. He sacked Mariota on a 4th but isn’t listed on any other 4th down play the entire season. I’d like to see those too. If you would tell me what games it would help.

Mitch is the perfect, low risk bridge and it’s much cheaper to jump up in 2nd if one they like falls. Just don’t think they want Pickett. Usually anything you hear about them in public is smokescreen. And 2nd is a more reasonable risk for Howell, Corral, Strong, Ridder. If your GM doesn’t have an idea of where other teams might finish, when it will greatly affect your own teams assets, that’s on him. Problem is, the only teams that even thought about it weren’t going to come off a 1st or decent 2nd. It’s like turning down 3 premium picks and 25/yr to overpay a one dimensional DE.

Where did he say that? He just pointed out your typical mistake. And the debate is a 3rd on Bigsby(or another RB) instead of a 1st on Bijan.

It’s more about RB value than what CAR got in the trade. I think the Panthers did as well as they could in todays NFL. Which is the whole point. How can a player do all those things you claim, and the best they got a mid 2nd value. All those picks add up to a value around pick 44. No team would offer a #1 for a player that is more than a RB? The positional value gap is wide and expanding. And injuries are the main reason every RBs value has gone down. That’s why CAR is eating 18M in dead cap to watch him play for SF next year.
