Update: Charles Tillman signed by Panthers (official)
Bartin replied to OnlyPantherFaninMaine's topic in Carolina Panthers
The assumption a lot of people make that a vet can somehow teach everyone at his position all his skills and automatically makes everyone better has always amused me. How often is that true? The Bears secondary outside of Peanut(when he plays) has been terrible recently -
Charles Tillman, CB aka "Peanut" signs with Panthers
Bartin replied to mc52beast's topic in Carolina Panthers
Other than extending Cam which is probably not happening any time soon there aren't really any options to clear cap space that don't involve restructuring and pushing money into the future which Gettleman has already said he is against and is what got us in this cap mess in the first place. He's not going to touch CJ's contract and extending TD into his mid 30s is not smart when he can just wait until after the season to see if he loses anything with age. Jennings would likely take around $4-5M in space and that would put us well under Gettlemans preferred buffer zone even when you factor in Williams coming off the books soon. -

1 year, $3.05M That's a lot for him and you may as well cross Jennings off any wish list. -

RUMOR: Panthers looking to move up to 16-20th pick
Bartin replied to @bobbyagnese's topic in Carolina Panthers
Kugbila may very well not have been BPA but unless you have access to the Panthers draft board then there is absolutely no way to know that conclusively. He also could have been ranked very highly on our board which could have been a scouting failure or he just hasn't been healthy enough for us to ever find out if he's any good. The player who went immediately after Kugbila was David Bakhtiari who has started 32 straight games at LT for the Packers so there was definitely a miss there though. -

So giving up a 7th to get Bene early in the 5th means Gettleman doesn't draft BPA? -
Curious as to why no Strong pre-draft visit.
Bartin replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
Strong's speed definitely does not translate to game speed. Many thought he would be in the 4.6 range prior to the combine based on tape. Running a 4.4 was shocking. -

We brought Short, Benjamin and Ealy in for visits and had a private workout with Star at Utah. -

How were his PFF ratings in 2013 and the 2 games he played in 2014? I thought I remembered him already being on the decline in 2013, but I'm not positive on that. -

There's not going to be any competition. If anyone really wanted him he would be signed by now. A minimum contract will probably be enough. -

That's probably the opposite of the plan. Tillman is 6'2" and fits the mold of big outside CB that Gettleman wants. -

Eh, no thanks. He's 34 and a shadow of his former self. He's struggled badly with injuries the last few years. -
Jarrett is about 15-20 lbs lighter than the NFL standard for NT's and maybe a little short. I wonder how much that would factor into Gettlemans evaluation. He seems to be really big on getting guys with the right measurables? Really good player though. I think he'd do well here.

They are probably weighing things like schools, whether or not they want to move the whole family and if they do then houses come into play. I'd guess teams are offering him 2-3 years at around $4M per year. His agent is probably trying to squeeze a little more guaranteed money out of teams but I'd imagine most of the offers are pretty well set by this point.

RUMOR: Panthers looking to move up to 16-20th pick
Bartin replied to @bobbyagnese's topic in Carolina Panthers
How much is he giving up and where is he trading to? 1st and 2nd to get him at #14? I'd be elated. 1st, 2nd, 4th and 2016 1st and 4th to get him at #6? I'd be pretty mad about it. -
The reports about Jennings always said he was going to take his time to come to a decision and weigh all the options. Everything he has done so far seems to mesh with that. He is 31 and has a family and wants to make the best decision for both he and them. He probably has fair offers from a few teams including the Panthers and Dolphins on the table and the decision will come when he is ready. I wouldn't be surprised if he still takes another visit or two and I don't think the Panthers are in any better or worse position than they were before.

I think some people need to separate GM Chip from Coach Chip.

RUMOR: Panthers looking to move up to 16-20th pick
Bartin replied to @bobbyagnese's topic in Carolina Panthers
If we trade up to #18 and get the 4th best player on our board then that is absolutely BPA. If we trade up to #18 and get the 18th best player on our board then that is still technically BPA, but it is stupid because we gave up valuable picks to get someone who is probably not much better than what would be available at #25. If we trade up to #18 and get the 20th best player on our board, but feel we have to because he is the only player left at his position with a 1st or 2nd round grade then that is not BPA. The act of trading up or down does necessarily mean the pick is BPA or not. -
RUMOR: Panthers looking to move up to 16-20th pick

No of course not, but that's just one way they justify a primarily need based pick to fans who think they reached. That doesn't mean the player was on the top of their board though. -
RUMOR: Panthers looking to move up to 16-20th pick
Bartin replied to @bobbyagnese's topic in Carolina Panthers
Based on what though? Have any GM's ever said that need factors into a players grade or position on their draft board with the possible exception of QB? The whole purpose of pure BPA is to be position independent and that is what Gettleman preaches. If you factor in need on the draft board then you might as well call it drafting for need and not BPA. -

Bartin replied to @bobbyagnese's topic in Carolina Panthers
Scheme fit is not the same thing as need. Scheme fit absolutely factors into the draft board. Need does not necessarily. -
Joe Person @josephperson ยท Mar 31 .@GregJennings tweeting he has a deal done. I'm told it's not with #Panthers. Yep, all he said is that Jennings himself said he had a deal and he was told the Panthers hadn't signed him which was 100% accurate.

RUMOR: Panthers looking to move up to 16-20th pick
Bartin replied to @bobbyagnese's topic in Carolina Panthers
You can't talk to anyone without it risking it being leaked and to be sure this wouldn't be his only plan. A smart man sets up contingencies to plan for all scenarios. Gauging the cost of trading up is one of those contingencies. -
RUMOR: Panthers looking to move up to 16-20th pick
Bartin replied to @bobbyagnese's topic in Carolina Panthers
A 1st and a 3rd gets us into that range and I think this is a smart move to ask around now if we are actually looking to trade up to that range. That way we can lock in a decent price early on and know what we have to give up to move to a certain spot rather than be forced to make a panic move and overspend on draft day during the 10 minute window each pick is allotted.
