Imagine if we invested in offense what we did in defense
mickeye76 replied to Snake's topic in Carolina Panthers
I really like our defense. There I said it. Two pieces from completion. Free safety and MLB. Carter, Luvu and Shaq are solid but adding a young field general in the middle is "chefs kiss". Then adding a safety with coverage skills to go with Chinn who is extremely talented at finding the ball in run situations and has blitzing capabilities is part of fielding the top defense we are capable of being. Sorry tangent. To the point of post yes we need to spend draft capitol and free agency monies on offense. The offense is more like seven pieces away. Center, Left tackle, two guards, tight end, running back and quarterback. I think BC, tremble, Elflien and a healthy CMC can only help the situation. CMC and Tremble need running partners to share the load. BC and Elflein just need a shot at a position till we can find a upgrade or someone younger. If BC and Pat can fill two of those spots then it leaves only five spots. Still reading? Here's a top 10 mock draft. 1. Jags ~ Evan Neal, Bama LT 2. Lions ~ Aiden Hutchinson, Michigan DE 3. Texans ~ Kayvon, Oregon DE 4. Jets ~ Kyle Hamilton, ND Safety 5. Giants ~ Ikem, NC St OL 6. Panthers ~ Cross, Miss St OL 7. Giants ~ Linderbaum, Iowa OL 8. Falcons ~ Strong, Nevada QB 9. Broncos ~ Pickett, Pitt QB 10. Jets ~ Stingley, LSU CB This is the QB crazy draft. This is actually what we hope the steelers, browns and Vikings think is gonna happen so they trade up. Fun lil extra where the qb's land in this scenario 11. Redskins ~ Howell UNC QB 18. Saints ~ Willis Liberty QB I'd rather wait on a QB till next year. Weak class is a misnomer cause these kids can play but the caveat is they need to be put in the right situation. We are not it right now till we invest in the offense better. -
Our play calling and offensive scheme was horrible this year. Just no identity. Not a Sam apologist but where was the play action and bootleg passes ( one of the few things I've seen Sambo do well) Also the play calling when Cam was in there was silly too. RPO with that exaggerated slow hand off Cam was doing. Jeezus. All our Qb's dinking and dunking. I thought last year the dink and dunk was cause Teddy liked that style. I now realise the coaches were pushing that. Either from lack of trust (Sam) or lack of arm (Cam) or injury gun shyness (Teddy) we seemed content to get 4 yards a pass. I do think they were hamstrung by the limitations of our QB's though. That said it seems little effort was put into developing a scheme and identity for the offense other than pre-emptive damage control (aka playing scared), college style rotation of qb's ( aka bush league B.S.) and a misery go round depth chart on the offensive line. The lack of creativity and balls by the offensive playcallers this year was embarrassing. I do actually feel we can turn this around quickly on offense. We just need to develop an offensive identity. The fact in the same draft we took a BIG but slowish mauler like Deonte Brown and a finesse zone gap undersized LT like BC was an indication we had no clue what we wanted the oline to look like. I actually think Elflien can play center for us. I also think BC is deserving of a chance at LT. That leaves our guards as the missing pieces. Along with QB, TE and another RB to add to the committee.

My point was that the chargers oline has done a decent job keeping Herbert upright this year and have run blocked well for ekeler. A good QB will continue to be good behind a mediocre line to the point they will even make lines look better. But a rookie put behind a BAD oline will likely look worse and it could derail any future progress. Case in point Indianapolis had Luck ( franchise type) then failed to address the oline till too late. I mean if you think a couple free agents can bandaid this line well enough to place a rookie behind it cool. I disagree.

They were missing their usual right tackle. Part of the reason maxx crosby went off. Ekeler had gaps a semi could drive through. They have a functional oline. It works.

Trenches are the foundation. Front 5 and 7 man gang. Adding weapons on offense. Adding playmakers in the secondary. If you have a team built the QB might just come to you. Tampa Bay is an example. I still think the defense is the closest to built. Need to add more beef in the middle to go with brown. I also want a new school uber athletic MLB. Lastly another young safety that complements Chinn. So three positions. Now on offense the list is longer. Sadly CMC may never be the same. Chubba is decent but he not a bell cow beast mode dude. Need to add to the committee. Abdullah, Chubba and a rookie bruiser. I am interested in developing BC at left tackle but the interior line needs upgrading. I like what I've seen from tommy tremble but Ian could be upgraded. A tremble clone would be nice. Tough willing blocker with better hands than Ian. So QB.... Yep we all know. Six positions, four of which are really important. QB and the oline. Core players at each level with emphasis on the high impact guys. MLB general on field. QB terrorizer pass rusher. Playmakers at RB,WR and TE. But it all comes down to the trenches.

Trade out of 6 or trade away a player instead?
mickeye76 replied to Reebis21's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think it's a possibility. I'm thinking Houston. They need a face of franchise type cause Watson is ugly. I think they roll with Mills for one year. A third and fifth for CMC. Trade down with Cleveland cause I think they ready to evict Baker from the stadium. They get a new QB. We get a top tier lineman and a second round pick. Win win win. -

For us to get that lower pick is near impossible. We need the Jets and giants both to win. There is a post on here that breaks it down more. Just like last week with the taints. I would rather beat the succaneers and enjoy a win than care bout a draft. -
True. If he was only a big hitting safety. For his size he is a playmaker on the ball. Him and Chinn would a fearsome duo.
-
A safety has not been taken in top 5 since Sean Taylor. Taylor was a unicorn. A rare athlete and football player. But there is a player in upcoming draft comparable. Kyle Hamilton is that guy. 6'4" 220lbs of lightning. I know positional value etc. Really though can you imagine a secondary with a resigned Gilmore, a healthy Horn, Chinn and Hamilton prowling the center? Just saying. Believe it or not this could be a option if... We can find a guard and or center in FA. I prefer to either trade down and load up on BPA at positions of need, ( MLB, FS, OL and of course QB) or take either Ikem, Cross or Linderbaum and save QB till next year. Kyle Hamilton is a dark horse for that pick though. Someone no one is talking bout as a option so...

Please I hope this is not the plan. Without a team of competent coaches a rookie would be doomed. Without a stellar oline many a rookie has failed. It would take a miracle for a QB to succeed in the current Panther organisation.

Oh woe is me. Our coach needs to get gud. Stop sucking. All those teams have a passable to really good QB. The Titans have Derrick Henry ( maybe ya have heard of him ) Our oline is legit the worse I've ever seen. Our QB depth chart needs to be burned. None of them are starters. So yeah the fact a coach has not magically turned them into a playoff calibre team does not surprise me.

As much as it may hurt to do so. We need to trade down. Which means passing on top tier talent. But we have multiple holes on the oline. An example of a trade that could benefit us. Las Vegas Raiders move up. 6 for 22, 53 and 84. 22. Ikem Ekwonu NC St. 53. Zion Johnson Boston College 84. Jarrett Patterson Notre Dame BC, Zion, Jp, Ikem, Moton. Now I get the that guy won't be there argument. That's why I'm gonna rank the guards and centers. OG - 1. Ikem 1b. Green 2. Wanya Morris 2b. Zion Johnson 3. Thayer Munford. 3b. Nick Broeker. OC - 1. Tyler 2. Emil Ekiyor 3. Jarrett 4. James Empey. I am not looking real hard at LT because I'm starting to believe in BC. If given a legit partner on the left side and a full off season at his preferred position he could improve greatly.
-
Nice draft. I too am on the Muma hype train. We need a legit MLB. I've resigned myself to him getting scooped up late round three though. Around pick 80 something. Jets could have they eye on Linderbaum. If we trade down we are likely to miss on him or Cross.
-
Always beat the saints. A win would be nice.
-
I like it. Here is another one. Free agent - LT Leno Jr, look him up. LG Ikem OC rookie like Jarrett Patterson RG Brown or Rookie Josh Sills RT Moton
-
Nobody. The 2nd is from a trade down. I think CMC could be traded for a 2nd.
-
Trade down. Trade CMC. Acquire two 2nd round picks. Believe or not trading down could effectively move us out of the range of Linderbaum, Cross and Ikem. That said we are in prime real estate for a second tier tackle or guard. I feel we need four picks in the top 100 to progress the team. Add a linebacker and free safety during the first 3 rounds and hit on em the defense is set.
-
Pickett kinda reminds me of Herbert. That said id rather go with a later guy Carson Strong or hell a local guy like the coastal carolina or wake Forest kid. Run with cam and Sam for a year behind a improved oline and get that top 5 pick for a QB next year.
-
Crazy thought. Trade down twice. For instance Cleveland decides they just have to have the top wr of class so they trade up to 7. 17, 49 and 81 for our pick. Then NY giants trade up from 37 for a QB or offensive line help available at 17. Both positions we need by the way. But 17 and 105 for 37, 69 and 78. Yeah we have traded out of the first 10 picks even the whole first round. Crazy I know but the positions we really need like center, guards, MLB and free safety are available all through the 2nd and 3rd round. Of which we now have 5 instead of 0. Add on a blockbuster trade of CMC that nets Houston's pick in the second and we have two picks right outside the 1st.
-
Rivera did not throw cam under the bus but he did shorten his career by mismanaging serious injuries. Also Ron and his regime never addressed the declining oline. Lastly Ron ran CMC into the ground so... Wins will cover some glaring flaws.
-
I made some critiques on Cam in an earlier post but he gave it his all yesterday. Played gritty and tough. I like this new Cams attitude, unfortunately his body is starting to betray him. Placing blame on him is somewhat unfair. Why is Cam the leading rusher? The run game is non existent almost. Can I get a play action pass? It's unfair by Rhule to say Cam is holding onto the ball too long though cause from what I saw Cam did a decent job getting rid of ball quickly and not taking too many costly sacks. Our qbs have been playing "hot potato" with the ball the last 2 seasons. Teddy dinked and dunked cause he was skittish behind our oline. Sam's fragile confidence was crushed behind it. Now Cam is trying to be Superman still but the oline is kryptonite.
-
Ikem the dream. Him Green, Linderbaum and Cross are the guys I wish we would draft.
-
5 step drop? Cam don't do that. Cam played decent early. The 4th and 2 screen to the turf, the underthrown ball the one time he actually attempted something down field and that interception at the end were embarrassing. But I've noticed two or three bad habits Cam has developed. Does not use his waning athleticism to move the pocket. If he is running he is not looking down field nearly every time. Also what is up with his handoff? It's so slow. I get it's a rpo type of situation but it telegraphs the play. It almost looks like the RB has to time his burst to whatever Cam is doing. It slows the RB down. Lastly his arm is not as strong. Accuracy was never his game but his ball had zip. Now it's all short passes half of which don't make it over the outstretched arms of defenders. Oline was also decent early but gradually started to get mauled by the bills defense. If Erving was not waving people through like a turnstile the guards were ending up on there backside. I saw more than one instance where the oline barely slowed the rusher down. The entire offense is just plain ugly.
