the panthers weren't in rebuild mode in either of those. They missed the playoffs by one game in 2022 and looked fantastic down the stretch. The talent was clearly there; the coaching was not, until rhule was fired. And rebuilding or not, you need a QB that can actually like run practices and show up on sunday and paying a 5th rounder for one is completely reasonable. And you're not remembering the circumstances around Gilmore. The defense, especially early in the season, was looking like it was good enough to compete. the team was fuging 3-1, coming off a loss in dallas with a ton of bullshit. Never forget Jeremy Chinn hitting that white tight end so hard he fumbled, ut because he was literally stopped in time like he was hit by Thanos gauntlet the refs called hi forward progress stopped? A 5th for mayfield is fine. A 6th for Gilmore is something you do every single time. also ftr trading up to the first overall pick was the right play, they just ate poo on execution.

as i pointed out in my thread comparing first and second years, bryce becoming a top 20 qb would basically take a statistical leap that no other player in the past ten years has made. he was so bad his first year that just becoming would not have statistical comparison.

and there's no bigger story than bryce right now. you can't talk about the panthers or follow their training camp without noticing that the team is deficient at the most important position on the field. "I can't even read the TC thread without you people pointing out how bad bryce is" is like complaining Endgame features Thanos too much. it is the issue of this team, despite what some people would like to believe it will not matter how good the defense is this year if bryce can't manufacture more than 10 points a game.

just so we're clear regarding the guy who says it's a good thing bryce is throwing picks because it means he's being aggressive: one was a shallow out route that got jumped he threw those all the time last year and they're the kind of basic play he's unable to execute because of his arm strength

its not just about his height. he is so frail. He's just impossibly tiny. he looked small at alabama and now in the pros it's comical. i will go to my grave saying this but i refuse to believe any players with NFL experience saw bryce in person and thought it could work out.
