This "we are going to treat him as a rookie" carp they tried to sell was asinine. First of all his contact alone nullifies that. With a rookie you have 3-4 years to decide to invest heavily. With Sam we invested before he even played for us with the 5th year option. Also people love to point out that 1st round picks like Fields have a low chance of working out historically. That is true, but first round picks that get drafted and play terrible for their 1st three years I'm guessing have even less of a chance of being successful.

There are coaches in that room that get paid for that. So you cut Sam, eat $19m then spend then spend another $4m to fill a backup QB spot that in the long run probably won't matter anyway. We just keep throwing bad money after bad money. Teddy is an example of that. We didn't like him so we cut him and wasted cap space on another guy that wasn't going to work out. We should have let him play out his deal, or at least the first 2 years, and drafted a new guy. Best thing this organization can do is to plan on being bad for the next 2 years. Its what we should have done the past 2 years.

and that gives their fan base something to look forward to. Everyone who tries to compare Sam to Fields at this point in time is stupid. Fields is a rookie. This is Sam's 4th year. I'm not saying Fields will turn out to be elite, but he still has time to develop. Their fan base has something to hope for. With Sam you usually know what you have with a player after 2-3 years.

I'm not sure why everyone is worried about getting rid of him, in the long run it really won't matter. What are our options this offseason for QB? Lets say we draft one. Sam can start the season and if/when he plays bad you go the rookie. Whether the rookie or Sam plays we are probably going to be bad. Lets say we draft a cheap FA QB. Sam can be a prepaid backup, saves us from wasting more money at the QB spot. Honestly if we go this route we will probably be bad anyway again. Any cheap FA is cheap for a reason. We go all in and sign/trade for an elite QB. At this point the backup matters more and you might want to have a capable backup if you realistically think you have a chance at a good season. People need to quit thinking in terms of winning but instead think about finding our franchise QB and quit wasting resources that don't help whatever QB we find in the future.

Its guaranteed salary so it is tradable. Only way somebody trades for it is we were to attach an asset to it, NBA style. What would that take? A first would probably do it. A second? maybe. A third? I doubt it. Maybe you attach a player to it, one of these corners we have? Sam and CMC and you get a some picks back? I think the most likely outcome is he is on our roster at the beginning of the year. Either we sign a vet and he is the backup or we draft a guy and he starts as the starter and if he struggles it will be easy for them to transition to the rookie. In reality the best scenario for the team would be for us to draft a guy, let him sit for a year, and Darnold to play good enough to at least get resigned by another team at the end of this contract and get us some type of comp pick. Or Darnold plays so bad we get a high draft pick to draft OL to help said rookie that we drafted the year before.

You don't need the Oline first, you need a QB first. There are teams on that list with great O-lines who are terrible offensively because they don't' have a QB.

The oline is bad but its distracting everyone from the main problem on this team.

Grier was always the correct answer Actually they should have slow played the Cam situation. "hey Cam, based on recent injuries we aren't comfortable giving you an extension. You are welcome to look for a trade, if not you can play on the last year of your deal" After that you go with Grier and we are still in this spot with a lot more cap space and draft picks.

I agree, on paper it seems to be a down year. I'm just afraid we have backed ourselves into a corner and we force something. Think about all the times you were high on a player and he turned out bad, or you didn't like a guy and he turned out good. Maybe that happens here.

Not necessarily. QBs aren't even money bets, if you get lucky and you are right then its worth it, all is good. Problem is, we have probably backed our self into a corner where we end up taking a gamble with really bad odds.

More like 2 games we should win, 1 game we will win that we shouldn't and 1 game we will win because the other team rest their starters. So we end up 8-9 and pick 15th.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if we do the opposite. We might be drafting in that 10-14 range and try to move into the top 10 to get a QB.

I could actually see him back next year. His salary is guaranteed, paying him 18m to sit at home hurts also. Especially if we draft someone, Sam could start the season, if he plays good the staff saves some ego, if he plays bad its easy to let the rookie slide in with no pressure.

Its obvious by the drafting and free agency moves that they thought they could be productive offensively based on scheme. Whereas defense needed personnel. Like you said it is probably a bit of a reality check for them coming from college. Maybe they learn from it and become better coaches.

Teddy is a way better QB than Sam and has been his entire career. You give Teddy this defense and we have a couple more wins.

This defense with just an average or slightly below average offense (Teddy or Cam) would make for a really good team.

I don't think so. I think Rhule, Hurney, Fitt, someone convinced him they coudl win now with these guys. Tepper wants his Roethlisberger. Franchise guy that you draft and he plays for you for 15 years. A QB that you helps you win, not one that you win in spite of.

Everyone has been so worried about Tepper being one of those hands on owners that meddles in the day to day operations, a Jerry Jones or Snyder type. If anything he has been the opposite, he has been more patient than most expected and he has seemed to stay out of the day to day operations and has let the "football people" make football decisions. I think we have reached a point were he might set some directives. Time to find a QB, enough with the experiments, everything we do from this point on should be for one goal, to find a franchise QB. I'm not saying he will pick the actual QB in the draft but I think there will be a lot of pressure to draft a QB this year, which can be dangerous when you start talking yourself into someone, but we have reached that point. Like I said he might not pick the actual QB but I could see a lot of people in the organization hoping it is Sam Howell. Being a Carolina guy would be good for the fan base. Lets be honest, best thing that could happen to this organization this year is to not win another game. In reality that probably wont happen, defense is too good and there are some really bad teams in the league this year. Drafting in that 6-10 range instead of that 12-16 range would be huge though, and even then might have to do a trade up. I could see anyone on the roster being available as part of a trade up along with picks.

the irony is, that with our defense this year, that our staff just wanted Sam to be a game manager which Teddy actually does well.

This QB class is going to be all of the place. There doesn't seem to be much consensus among the so called experts. With that being said I don't see us drafting high enough to get QB1 or QB2. There are a lot of really bad teams this year. We might even need to trade up a little to get QB3. I don't see Corral making it past QB2. If you are a Howell fan you need Willis to play really well and become QB2. His last game doesn't help that.

This team was so obsessed over finding a top 10 QB that we released a middle 10 QB to gamble on a bottom 10 QB because we convinced ourselves that said bottom 10 QB had a higher ceiling.

I agree. We took a QB who has been one of the worst in the league, not average, not slightly below average, but one of the worst by many metrics, and we act surprised by what is happening? I'm not sure how you really judge the offensive staff. I would criticize them more for thinking this was a good idea than the actual play calling.
