There are times I want my owner to get involved. Peterson actually is a very tempting name. A lot of times fans want the young, up and coming coach, but an older guy with loads of NFL experience, at all levels might be exactly what this staff needs. Lefwitch and Moore wouldn't be in consideration for OC, that would be a lateral move for them. People keep throwing out names that are HC candidates, OC candidates would be a different pool.

Carolina Panthers HC's - Winning % Through First Two Seasons
AU-panther replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
Rivera never had back to back winning seasons, did he really rebuild? -
Points for and against can sometimes be a bit misleading depending on who is on your schedule. For example, holding KC to 25 points is a good day whereas allowing Detroit to score 25 would be bad. This graph accounts for your opponents. Basically, we have the 7th (maybe 6th, in line with KC) best defense and 7th worst offense according to the chart. Snow's defense might actually help save Rhule's job. Tepper might buy the idea that if Rhule changes the offense that the team could turn around quickly. Add in the fact that we are one of the youngest defenses in the league.

Dane Brugler Mock Draft 1.0 (from The Athletic)
AU-panther replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
I agree with drafting with a drafts strengths. I thought we should have gone OT the year we took Brown and QB this year. I agree that this class is worse than last year on paper, but last year was one of the best QB classes ever, that doesn't mean they will turn out good, but as prospects it was one of the best ever. I just don't think you can always wait for that type of class. 2013 was bad on paper, and it turned out bad. 2017 was bad on paper, Trubisky was the first QB drafted, that tells you what people thought of it, but it turned out good. I just don't think you can automatically discount any one position because of some perceived strength or weakness. Last year pick 12 gets you the 5th QB off of the board. This year it might get you the 2nd. You might like the 2nd guy this year more than the 5th last year. Ranking doesn't matter, all that matters is grade, there might be a guy in this class that we have high enough grade on to take at wherever we are picking in the first. -
Speaking of that draft, people should look at the first round 2017 NFL Draft Listing | Pro-Football-Reference.com This idea of not wanting to trade down because they might lose out on a sure thing is ridiculous. Take the QBs out of the equation and Myles Garrett (there is a reason the #1 pick is so expensive) who are the 3 best players from that draft? Watt at 30? Ramcyk at 32? Adams at 6? White at 27? When you look at old drafts you realize how hard finding greats players really is, even in the first.

Everyone keeps saying that none from this class would have gone before the top 4 last year. Good chance that Mahomes, Watson, Lamar, and Rodgers wouldn't have either. -

and most of them probably had similar grades to the guys this year. Trubisky went before those guys. Those guys had question marks. -

You don't have to put him on the field, you can let him sit on the bench for a year. If you wait to get your QB to when everything is perfect you might never find one. If a QB that you like is available, you take him if you have that opportunity. If you draft an OL this year there is no guarantee there will be a QB you like the following year, or even if you like one, he might not be available where you pick. I'm not saying you force the pick this year, maybe its next year where a QB is available to you where you pick. My point is they are hard to find, if you like one and he is available take him -

What is your idea of 1st round caliber? Luck and Trevor? What about Watson? Mahomes? Lamar? Herbert? I guess you wouldn't draft them either. There will be a QB this year that will have a similar grade to those 4 on most teams boards. -
I agree our defense could be better, it always can be, but overall, it's not near the problem our offense is. Points scored last year and this year, 24th and 23rd. Points allowed last year and this year, 18th and 8th. Plenty good enough for us to win with a good offense. Fans get unrealistic and expect you to hold every team to less than 14 points, just doesn't happen for most teams. Weve had 3 games where we gave up 30+ points. The 5th, 6th, and 7th best defenses have each had 2.

This is so overplayed by people because everyone is comparing it to last year. Last year was different because you had a guy (Trevor) that probably would have been the 1st QB every year since Luck, then Wilson probably would have been a 1st QB a lot of years. Everyone wants this type of prospect but honestly unless you are picking #1 it usually doesn't happen. Depending on the team evaluating, if you combined all of the QBs from last year's class and this years, the top 1 or 2 from this year's class would probably fall in the 3-6 range. Same could be said about Mahomes, Lamar, Watson, and Herbert as prospects. Alos people think in terms of ranking instead of grade. For example, the Pats got the 5th QB last year at 15 who might have had a grade of 90, this year the 15th pick might be the 2nd QB took but he might have a grade of 90 also. -
Pederson actually makes sense in a lot of ways. When a process isn't working you usually want to try something different the next time. Pederson not only has the NFL experience but actually has the experience of being in that job. Guys like Dorsey and Kafka have NFL experience but they would be moving into a job title they have never done at the NFL level. and he might when it is all said it done. He has been very quick to move on from players, lets see what he does. Rhule isn't the only person who liked Brady, he was a somewhat hot commodity after LSU. Even if Rhule does make the decision on his own I do hope Tepper highly "recommends" they get some nfl experience on the staff.
-
I know we don't always agree but nice to see you back. If we are looking for a HC I could definitely see some of the names you stated being considered, but what if we keep Rhule and he is pressured to overhaul the offensive side of the ball? As we know NFL coaches usually don't make lateral moves so if we are looking for a new OC we realistically won't be looking at current OCs, more likely we will be looking at former OCs or up and coming position coaches. Who are some position coaches that you could see having connections with us? Ken Dorsey? Or some position coaches that are highly regarded in the league? Such as Mike Kafka, Chiefs passing game coordinator

5 plays analyzed from WFT game worth the watch
AU-panther replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
2nd play from the twitter above. 5 man front Haynes, Roy, Brown, YGM, and Riddick. LT kicks Haynes out, to be expected with Haynes lined up as he is. LG gets to second level and blocks Chinn. Center gets a great push on Roy. Luvu takes a wrong step at the snap, RG easily gets in front of him. I'm not saying Haynes is great at run defense but this idea that bigger DEs will automatically fix our run defense is wrong, it's just lazy analysis. Most weakside ends will get kicked out by the LT on that alignment. -

Everyone is getting caught up talking about Burns and our "tweener ends" but that is getting a bit overplayed. Watch the first play from the video that Gooby posted in slow motion. Reddick is the strong side end, the play goes away from him so it wouldn't have matter if he was any bigger. Weakside end is actually Haynes, not Burns. Your DTs are Brown and Roy, 320lbs and 330lbs. Everyone sees Haynes get kicked out of the play but honestly that is expected and would happen to most DEs that are outside aligned on the LT. So this idea that bigger DE's will magically fix that play is wrong. Watch the play in slow motion and watch what happens to both DTs. Roy can't get off of his block and Brown ends up going underneath the play and leaves the cutback. -
I think fans and scouts have to be careful about trying to force the next great thing. You try to convince yourself that Willis can be the next Lamar Jackson. Same thing happened with Zach Wilson, you see some of the same type of off-platform throws that Mahome does so you start hoping to find that. Trey Lance and Josh Allen is another example. Recently successful players heavily influence scouts on what they start looking for in future players, but that can be dangerous. Willis might be as fast as Lamar, or have as strong as an arm, but that doesn't mean he is going to develop the same way.

Pot Roast ripping into Defense on sidelines Sunday
AU-panther replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Of course bigger, stronger, and faster always wins, but in reality when you go bigger and stronger you end up slower. Maybe our defense gets better against the run but worse against the pass. Maybe instead of being 6th in points allowed we become 16th. -

We are 6th in the league in points allowed, but by all means lets go to big boy ball so we stop the few teams that run on us but then we can complain that we can't stop 75% of the teams that throw on us. NFL Football Stats - NFL Team Opponent Points per Game | TeamRankings.com Don't get me wrong, its never a bad idea to add talent, my point earlier is often when a team has sucess running on you its not just because your players aren't "big enough", often players are following their assignments. Personally I think this is why there has been all this chatter of leaders have to hold people accountable. -

A lot of times when a defense is getting gashed in the running game it’s not just about effort or having bigger players, it’s about discipline. Gap responsibility and doing your assignment is paramount and my guess is this is why you are hearing all of these comments about leadership needing to hold people accountable. -
5 major factors blame for loss. Cat Crave

I missed it, what did they actually say Cam did or didn't do? -
I was referring to his two long catches in the first half since you said his "biggest plays". I agree it might be just a coaching decision, my comment was in regards to you saying we using Gilmore more on running downs, that not correct. Form the most part they seem to be using him more on 3rd and passing situations, who they have him cover when he is on the field is a different discussion.
-
He was on the field on the first one, not the second. At the beginning of the game he was mostly playing on 3rd down and passing situations, then he had a series he didn't play much at all and then the series right before the half he played almost the entire series. I quit rewatching in the thrid. it's clear they are limiting his snaps and mostly using him in passing situations, not the other way around. Maybe he isn't 100%, even when he does come in they are leaving Donte on the other team's #1? Either they did a really good job of attacking us passing on early downs which is rather surprising for a RR team.
-
yep. Football is a game of possessions, that is why turnovers have such a high correlation to winning. Failing on 3rd and 4th down are like mini turnovers with less field position change. Change the conversion numbers by two (we go 5/12 and they go 6/15) and there is a good chance we win considering we had the turnover.
