  1. This is why QBs, OTs, and I'm guessing edge (or DT's that can rush the QB) are valued so highly.
  2. excellent point. If anything I would like to believe Morgan differed a good bit from Fitt on a majority of choices being made and hence the reason Tepper decided to promote Morgan. If Morgan and Fitt truly agreed on most, and then you still promote Morgan that doesn't look good.
  3. This is what happens when "old school football people" make decisions. There is little to no concept of positional value with this front office in regard to drafting or free agents. Does this mean that this front office is guaranteed to fail? No, but their margin of error is a lot smaller. They better get lucky in drafting. Anyone who thinks this team is heavily analytical driving clearly doesn't understand analytics.
  4. So the big time media football draft sources and the Panthers all had Bryce Young high on their draft boards, but every other team knew he was terrible and had him ranked low???? Come on now. Also, some of these sites actually do a really good job of predicating the top players so although they might not have access to every teams big board, their list turns to be very accurate. As far as fans knowing better than scouts it happens. Let's be honest it's not an exact science. In reality, everyone is wrong more than they are right. Some of these fans that were so sure about Stroud were the same that were so sure about Fields. Were there some scouts that didn't like Young, I'm sure, but here again its not crazy to think he was the top QB on a lot of team's boards. Fans scout based on stats, measurables, and usually YouTube highlight tape. Based on that Stroud felt like a no brainer. Throw in the game against GA and Stroud really looked good. Unfortunately for us scouts watch all the games. Young had some really good tape. The fact teams thought that high of him at that size tells you his tape was really good. Also, I do agree with you somewhat that sometimes fans are as good as teams at drafting. Just look at the results, teams aren't great. I think at times you could throw darts and be about as good. With that being said I don't think fans are as good as they think they are, it's always easy to be correct in hindsight.
  5. But it’s a pretty good guess. The vast majority of the normal sources who report on this stuff every year had Bryce as one of the top 2 QBs, if not the top. This was not Tepper going against the grain to prove how smart he was. Once we traded all the way to 1 I knew we were taking Bryce because teams don’t trade up to one to go out on a limb to take someone that nobody else wanted.
  6. We need to be focused on building a foundation through the draft. Spend wisely during that time then once that is in place open up the spending .
  7. Who are the 8 qbs better than Trevor and Dak?
  8. I'm not standing up for our drafting, i haven't really been impressed but from what I have read ForJimmy might be right. I can't find the actual article but if i remember correctly there is some history of TEs developing slower relative to other positions. Of course, there are exceptions but we are talking as a whole relative to other positions.
  9. Its pretty clear that a lot of people around here really don't understand analytics. What exactly are we considering analytics? Measurables? Advanced metrics? such as success against pressure for a QB? If a guy watches a film and can see that qb struggles against pressure is that really any different than when a guy watch's film and tracks how often a QB struggles against pressure and assigns it a number? People are quick to say I prefer the "eye test", really? One reason Young was on top of the QB draft board was because of the "eye test", he had good film. Made a lot of next level throws, maybe not the 60-yard bombs, but the anticipatory type throws scouts look for, also he did well when he got off platform and things started to break down. Analytics would tell you he was an outlier based on height and weight at the next level. Everyone remembers stroud from the GA game, but they didn't' really watch some of the tape from earlier in the season. Also most analytics would tell you trading up like we did for said QB isn't the smart play over time. People treat analytics as one super number when in reality analytics covers a broad range of factors that often overlap the so called "eye test".
  10. He spent big money on interior o-line, which is a position a lot of teams try to go cheap on, I would expect us to be good. We have the third highest cap cost o-line, we should be good. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/position/offensive-line/_/year/2024/sort/cap_total
  11. https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/03/13/carolina-panthers-david-tepper-frank-reich-split-quarterback-draft There was a report by Schefter where he said he heard a rumor that Frank wanted stroud. This was I think over a month out from the draft, also I don’t think he named the source. Later in the year there were reports that they were pretty much all in agreement on Bryce. Such as: https://www.outkick.com/nfl/panthers-owner-david-tepper-addresses-rumor-he-overruled-frank-reich-on-bryce-young-and-c-j-stroud
  12. Someone refresh my memory here, what are we basing the idea that Frank wanted around on? I’ll admit it’s entirely possible but I don’t remember any report saying that. All of the reports said they were in agreement on it. Also what about Caldwell. I’m sure he had a a well respected voice in the process. I’m sure Tepper was involved in the process but from all reports he defers to the football people, if he fell in love with one of the QBs I’m guessing it’s because the “football people” convinced him that Bryce was worth it.
  13. So….some of the same people who complained about Tepper promoting a GM that was part of the old staff are now complaining about the team getting rid of someone from the old staff.
  14. Or he got the QB that he wanted and he was just overrated as a coach because he had a good QB(luck) or a good OC.
  15. Didn’t have time to watch all of it but seemed to do well on contested catches and pushing off, we’ll see how well that translates. Has some physicality to his game, might be a good run blocker, some decent RAC, but not in the league of DJ, I didn’t see elite route running. He might struggle with press at the next level, but he has some physical tools and he might still decelop. I expect him to get some stats, the team can play to his strengths, wether or not he turns into a true #1 only time will tell.
  16. Imagine if we had traded back from #1 and got our 2nd Qb choice??? Sometimes not getting who you want is a good thing Also trading back doesn’t have to mean falling way back. What if it’s your turn to draft and you have 4-5 players all graded equally. Moving back a few spots and picking up a later pick isn’t a a bad thing. Also I like this idea of picking up future year draft picks. Teams tend to devalue those. I would much prefer a future 2nd than a current 3rd. It’s like earning interest on your draft picks. Nobody has the patience to do it that first time. If you did it every year you would really just give up that one year and gain a free round in each subsequent year.
  17. This is why its comical when people disparage fans for an opinion or thinking they could do better. Granted, your good front office people are smarter than most fans, but anyone can be terrible. I could take a big board list from ESPN or PFF and let my dog paw at it and he would at least be terrible also.
  18. I’m not saying we shouldn’t. Broncos and Pittsburg moved on from QBs that they didn’t trade the farm for. We gave up so much for young that they feel committed to him.
  19. Those teams didn’t mortgage their futures
  20. Who last longer in the league? Pickett or Howell? Just shows the talent difference year from year in the draft.
  21. We were 29th in the league in points allowed, shouldn’t be hard to improve. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-points-per-game
  22. Curious to know where you are getting those numbers from? Have always been interested in the real numbers behind drafting.
  23. Anyone notice how absent some people are from this thread???
  24. I agree that generational is a huge term but you are naming guys from 9-10 years ago to come up with guys that “might” be better prospects. Also you are looking at this as a fan and heavily weighing production. Think more in terms of evaluation like a scout. they aren’t looking at players and ranking them based on who had the most yards. Think about grading these guys on a variety of variables, Height, speed, hands, route running, rac, production, level of competition. i can see how he is one of the higher rated WRs in the last 10-15 years, that doesn’t guarantee him anything at the next level.
