  1. NFL Notes: Draft, Buccaneers, Eagles, Panthers Draft Ian Rapoport reports that South Carolina RB Mike Davis has workouts/visits scheduled with the Buccaneers, Seahawks, Browns , Falcons, and Patriots. Maryland WR Deon Long reportedly has interest from the Patriots. (Jason La Canfora) Tony Pauline reports that South Dakota OL Matt Huffer is working out for the Raiders on Thursday. According to Tony Pauline, the Raiders will bring in Indiana WR Shane Wynn for an official visit. The Raiders are also bringing in New Hampshire C Mike Coccia for a pre-draft visit. (Tony Pauline) Northwestern S Ibraheim Campbell has worked out for the Buccaneers, Browns, Texans, and has workouts scheduled with the Bears and Eagles, according to Aaron Wilson. Aaron Wilson reports that New Hampshire TE Harold Spears will visit the Broncos. Buccaneers Former Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik mentioned that they had a scout shadow WR Justin Blackmon during the pre-draft process in 2012 to gather information about his off-the-field behavior. “We found out there was a bar called the Cricket Inn or the Cricket, which was a popular bar there in Oklahoma State,” said Dominik, via ESPN.com. “He [the scout] sat there for one week, went in at 3 o’clock every day and stayed until 11 o’clock at night. That was his job, and we checked how many times did Justin Blackmon come in? And he came in too many times and we took him off our board.” Eagles Kevin O’Donnell reports that Eagles HC Chip Kelly is in Tampa Bay to work out USC WR Nelson Agholor. Panthers David Newton of ESPN writes that the Panthers are no longer in a position where they have to come away with an offensive tackle in the first round. “I think some of the things we’ve done takes a lot of pressure off, so when we get into the draft we can abide by what the board says,” coach Ron Rivera said last week at the NFL owners meeting. Newton adds that Carolina could consider other positions such as running back, wide receiver and defensive linemen.
  2. Greg Jennings @GregJennings Really glad to be wrapping this #FreeAgency process up! Glad it's coming to an end.· Hmmm Interesting Kelli Storey ‏@KelliStorey @GregJennings we have lots of sweet tea and Bo Berry biscuits here in Charlotte, Mr. Jennings. *cough, cough. Come to Carolina cough* lol
  3. The Chicago Bears announced the signing of former Falcons RB Jacquizz Rodgers to a one-year contract on Tuesday. Rodgers, 25, is a former fifth-round pick of the Falcons back in 2011. He payed out his four-year, $2,231,000 rookie contract with Atlanta that included $191,000 guaranteed. In 2014, Rodgers ran for 217 yards on 58 carries (3.7 YPC) to go along with 29 receptions for 173 yards receiving and two total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 17 running back out of 57 qualifying players, due in large part to his effectiveness as a pass-protector.
  4. NFL Notes: Draft, 49ers, Browns, Buccaneers, & Falcons Draft Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that FSU DL Eddie Goldman will be visiting with the Browns, Colts, 49ers, Lions, Patriots, and Panthers over the next few weeks. The Panthers met with UConn CB Byron Jones again on Tuesday after the workout, and the Patriots met with him this morning, according to Tony Pauline. Tony Pauline reports that the Giants have invited FSU TE Kevin Haplea to their facility for a visit. 49ers Ian Rapoport reports that the 49ers didn’t just bring in WR Hakeem Nicks and LB Lance Briggs for visits, they also put them through tryouts. Browns Aaron Wilson reports that the Browns are scheduled to host Washington DT Danny Shelton for a visit in the coming weeks. Buccaneers For what it’s worth, Buccaneers GM Jason Licht referred to Florida State QB Jameis Winston’s Pro Day as “outstanding.” (Roy Cummings) Falcons Field Yates reports that Falcons QB Matt Ryan will receive a $12 million deferred payment on Tuesday.
  5. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is reporting that the NFL has made the decision to move up the June-1 release date to May 12. NFL teams have had the option to release players after June 1, which ultimately increases their savings. It’s also worth mentioning that signing players after June 1 first don’t count against the compensatory draft-pick formula The downside with designating players as June 1 cuts is that they don’t receive the added cap space until that point in the offseason. By then, free agency has already played out and teams have added players through the draft, so their rosters are well stocked for the most part. By changing the date to May 12, the NFL will give free agents a better shot at signing on with a new team before the start of offseason workouts and in turn allowing teams to fill out their rosters without impacting their compensatory picks. Overall, it seems like an obvious change to make given that teams and players will both benefit from the May 12 date.
  6. Panthers Sign LB Jason Trusnik To A One-Year Deal
  7. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Raiders have released veteran DL Antonio Smith. Smith, 33, had one year remaining on his two-year, $9 million contract that he signed with the Raiders last March. He was set to make a base salary of $3.2 million for the 2015 season. According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Smith will free up $4 million available cap space for Oakland while creating no dead money. In 2014, Smith appeared in all 16 games for the Raiders and recorded 20 tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 57 defensive tackle out of 81 qualifying players. Interestingly enough, he graded out as the third best run-stopper in the league, but was also the worst interior pass-rusher.
  8. Report: Michael Crabtree’s Market Crashed After Playing “Poker” With Teams According to Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report, sources around the league believe free agent WR Michael Crabtree‘s market crashed after playing “poker” with teams this offseason. Cole mentions that Crabtree was expecting to secure a contract that would pay him close to $9 or $10 million per year. As things stand right now, it looks like Crabtree may have to accept a one- or two-year “make good” contract with the hope of testing the open market in the coming years. There’s still a chance that Crabtree’s agent could get some team to step up an offer him a more respectable contract at some point. In the end, Cole doesn’t see Crabtree getting the kind of money he’s seeking given where we are in the offseason and the fact that there is another deep draft class of receivers this year. Crabtree has visited with the Dolphins and reportedly still has interest from the 49ers. However, Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area recently reported that Crabtree is willing to wait as long it takes to find the right situation for him. Crabtree, 27, appeared in all 16 games and caught 68 passes for 698 yards receiving and four touchdowns last year. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 95 receiver out of 110 qualifying players.
  9. Free agent QB Matt Schaub is meeting with the Ravens Tuesday afternoon. Aaron Wilson @RavensInsider · Ravens expected to sign quarterback Matt Schaub, sources say NFL source says Matt Schaub deal is a one-year, $3 million deal
  10. NFL Notes: Jameis Winston, Draft, Bears, Chiefs, Vikings Jameis Winston Jason Cole reports that questions still remain from NFL teams regarding FSU QB Jameis Winston’s maturity. Cole has spoken to people within the league who are “scared” of Winston because “he acts like a ten-year-old.“ This has reportedly led to some questioning whether or not Winston will be able to hand the spotlight if he ends up being the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft. Cole adds that even people within Winston’s camp have acknowledged the maturity concerns. According to Cole, there are no questions regarding Winston’s athletic ability. Draft According to Ian Rapoport, FSU CB Ronald Darby has workouts/visits scheduled with the Buccaneers, Colts, Saints, Panthers, Jets, and Titans. Tony Pauline reports that all 32 teams were present for UConn’s Pro Day, and the Buccaneers, Jaguars and Bears all sent their defensive back coaches to watch CB Byron Jones. Ian Rapoport reports that Northwestern QB Trevor Siemian is visiting with the Broncos on Thursday and has a workout scheduled with the Bears. Chiefs Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said that they have no plans to cut ILB Derrick Johnson, who’s coming off of an Achilles injury. “Derrick is obviously one of the greatest inside linebackers to ever play for the club and there are some pretty good ones, if you go back in time,” Hunt said, via The Kansas City Star. “In terms of the modern era of the Chiefs, it’s hard to think about the club without thinking about Derrick at inside linebacker. He’s a great leader, he’s a tremendous person, represents the club well on and off the field. We’re looking forward to having him back this year, hopefully good as new. “You mentioned that his contract is up this year. There will be a point in time where we address that. But it just hasn’t been germane to this point. Bears Tom Pelissero reports that new Bears DL Ray McDonald’s one-year contract includes no guaranteed money and has a base value of $1.05 million to go along with $450,000 in incentives. According to Pelissero, the contract also includes a $30,000 workout bonus, $50,000 bonus for one game on 53-man roster, $870,000 base salary, and $6,250 for each game he’s active. Vikings Tony Pauline reports that the Vikings have four people on hand, including general manager Rick Spielman for Florida State’s Pro Day. According to Pauline, the Vikings are concentrating on the FSU defensive backs.

  13. Bills GM Doug Whaley mentioned that they hoping to re-sign veteran ILB Brandon Spikes in the coming weeks. “Hopefully get Brandon Spikes back,” Whaley said, per Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News. The market for inside linebackers has finally started to pick up in recent days, and Spikes is clearly among the best available players at the position. 49ers GM Trent Baalke said that Spikes is among the free agent linebackers that they’re considering right now, per Matt Barrows. Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 recently reported that the Vikings have “lukewarm” interest in Spikes. Spikes, 27, was forced to sign a one-year, $3 million contract with the Bills last year after finding very limited interest on the open market. In 2014, he appeared in all 16 games and recorded 54 tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and three pass defines. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the N0. 13 inside linebacker out of 60 qualifying players due in large part to a very solid rating as a run-defender.

  17. NFL Notes: Chiefs, Cowboys, Raiders, & Ravens Chiefs Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt mentioned that he’s optimistic that they will be able to get a long-term contract worked out with franchised OLB Justin Houston at some point. “I’ve been very consistent in saying that we not only value Justin as a football player, that we not only value Justin as a person and leader, and we want him to be a Chief for life,” Hunt said, via Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star. “And the negotiating process in these type of situations, as (general manager) John (Dorsey) has said, takes some patience. You just have to have patience. It will work out.” Cowboys Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mentioned that they’ll have to start looking for a future quarterback at some point in the near future. “We do have to look to the future relative to quarterback,’’ Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “It’s starting a time frame where a guy could come in and be a good backup. “Look at how Romo evolved into the guy he is today. He did a little time with the clip board.’’ Raiders Bill Williamson of ESPN takes a look a the remaining Raiders’ free agents and where things stand with Oakland. While Williamson mentions that the Raiders have told CB Tarell Brown that they want to get younger, there’s at least a chance he could be back on a “team-friendly” contract. Williams doesn’t expect the Raiders to re-sign CB Carlos Rogers or TE David Ausberry. According to Williamson, the Raiders to looking to find a better receive than Vincent Brown. Oakland apparently has no interest in re-signing RB Kory Sheets. Ravens Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that Louisville WR DeVante Parker will visit the Ravens prior to the draft.
