Part of that could have been to try to entice Houston to trade up. If Houston had taken the bait and given us 33 to trade places with us, we'd probably being sitting with Stroud and maybe Laporta. Man what a difference that would have made.

Assuming it's done do you select a qb this year or wait?
grimesgoat replied to Panthero's topic in Carolina Panthers
The FA QB list is pretty uninspiring. Re-sign Dalton or grab Lock. Draft a developmental QB in round 3/4. We're going to be picking in the top 5 next year, so now is the time to grab an edge. LB or CB in the second. I think these guys may know what they are doing with the draft. From the 2024 draft, I think Legette, Brooks, Sanders, and Wallace will all be starting in 2025 (and possibly Smith-Wade). There is a decent chance Raym will be our starting C next year. Another good draft in 2025 could set us up well for a real QB in 2026. I'm an eternal optimist. -
Other than the last paragraph, I can't get on board with this. All the QBs had red flags. Stroud played at OSU, had ridiculous skilled WRs, and supposedly couldn't process. Richardson was wildly inaccurate. Levis was dumb and always played below expectations. Young was clearly the cream of the crop based on 75% of the pundits and scouts. He was the most pro-ready drop-in option. Alabama QB who won a National Championship and a Heisman. Seemed like a sure thing if size issues could be overcome. Human nature is to blame someone, but sometimes things just don't work out. I was team Stroud and now I look smart, but you never know what's going to happen down the road. Injuries, surrounding cast, coaching, all play their part. The good news (for now), is we are doing something about this going forward instead of wallowing in a seemingly bad call. It's going to take this group (Cannales/Morgan) 2-3 years to make something happen anyway given our draft/dead cap situation heading into 2024. I'm going to give them a little time to see what develops.

I think this is the path forward, however we cannot afford to cut Bryce now. We would incur a dead cap hit of around 30m. I think he will be here at least through 2025, however I'd be surprised if he plays beyond next week. He will develop some sort of nagging groin injury or something. But anyone can see we have to develop our guys and get better and Bryce just does not help us do that in any way. I always thought he should have been allowed to sit for his first 7-8 games instead of throwing him out there right away. He just wasn't ready and now he's completely broken. He needs to be on the bench, but under no circumstances should we win more than 3 games. The next draft is too important. If we have to trot Bryce out there in November/December to avoid winning more than 4 games, we should do it.

Just popped in to make sure the usual whiners posted the same thing they have posted everyday since the beginning of training camp. Was not disappointed.

BREAKING: Panthers signing Rashad Penny
grimesgoat replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think Panthers can save 4m if they trade him post-June 1. That might be the play. Given the disfunction of the panthers offense and the lack of o-line, I could imagine a team sending a 6th for an RB just 1 year removed from 1300 yards and 11 tds. Maybe a late 6th. -
I hear you. But the plan was more than insert a C that has never played in the NFL. Their plan was to jettison the guy that was lousy (Bozeman), sign a couple of studs at guard, and slide Corbett over. You can't look at C in a vacuum. Look at the big picture. The line is vastly improved and will hopefully mesh. Corbett will get plenty of opportunities to practice his snapping skills during the offseason, training camp, and preseason. I fully expect a couple of bad snaps at some point during the year and the Huddle experts will scream "see, i told you so!" But we're not winning a super bowl this year. We'll be lucky to win 6 games. We just need to see if Bryce can play with a decent line. We should be able to do that with Corbett at C.
-
Corbett is an above average lineman and apparently really smart. He has the second highest cap hit on the team and cutting him would be even more expensive. I'd rather the guy play center than sit on his ass on the bench while we trot out some 5th rounder. We have a lot to fix and it wasn't going to happen in one season. I believe we are markedly better than last year but very thin/raw. If everyone stays healthy, this could be an interesting year - maybe 5-6 wins and some close competitive losses.

that would be a spectacular draft.

Panthers Select Xavier Legette WR - Pick 32, Round 1
grimesgoat replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
I just think Johnson will get the vast majority of targets with Thielen pulling a fair share as well. Mixing in the other WRs, RBs, and TEs, he may only see 3-4 balls a game. And the way he plays probably means he will miss a game or two here and there. But he is a weapon that will help our QB. And hopefully, he will eventually be our moose. -
Panthers Select Xavier Legette WR - Pick 32, Round 1
grimesgoat replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
This is the exact point I wanted to make. I wasn't a Leggett guy until I looked at some film this week. He is very good with the ball in his hands. Panthers will find ways to use him besides running routes. He may end up with only 25 catches for 450 yards, which will disappoint some people. But barring injury, I suspect he will feature prominently on kickoff returns and WR sweeps. Getting an extra 5-10 years on a KR will be big. Kid is a hard worker. He will eventually fine-tune his route running. But the main thing is he is a dawg that plays hard. He will help bring the culture change they want. Watch for Peyton Wilson at 39. -

Not who you want, but who will it be at 33 (if we stay put)?

I don't think we move back. I think they are in love with Legette. -

Panthers extend defensive tackle Derrick Brown
grimesgoat replied to Carolina Panthers's topic in Carolina Panthers
CMC, DJ Moore, and Donte Jackson were all extended. But when you have to rebuild, you have to trade your higher (or potentially higher) contracts for draft assets. Its the only chance you have to get better. -
If you can get these guys into a bidding war, I'd do it. Vegas gives us 44, 77, 208 and 2025 3rd for 33. 4 picks in the top 77 could net us some very good players. Starter-caliber LB, TE, WR, and OC could all be on the table.

There are a lot of startable CB, WRs, and C's sprinkled throughout rounds 2-3. But I think their primary need is to find a clone of Micah Parsons. A disruptor/dog. Someone they can line up anywhere and create havoc. They will go in one of two directions... Option 1: If Chop is there at 33, they grab him. At 39, they move back 10-15 spots and get an extra 3rd. Then they go WR, CB, C/RB with their next 3 picks. Option 2: If Chop is not there at 33, they move back from 33 10-15 spots and pick up an extra 3rd and a 2025 2nd. At 39 they pick Cooper or Wilson. Then they go WR, CB, C/RB with their next 3 picks.

Our OL salary in 2024 is 69m vs. 42m league average. It is expected to balloon to 87m in 2025, second highest in the league, and that is without Corbett. You have to find a way to bring the average down to a reasonable level. Team-building means looking out more than the current year.
