Chris Long: Bryce Young Went Toe To Toe With Patrick Mahomes
shaka replied to Icege's topic in Carolina Panthers
The way BY must play quarterback has a much higher degree of difficulty. Coupled with his physical limitations his margin for error is small. The guy evading the blitz and dropping a dime deep over double coverage is more exciting then a wobbling ball thrown into the blitz with good enough placement that gets 6 yards on a 3rd and 5. It's been beat to death that he will never be the first guy. He was the second guy vs the Chiefs. The second guy is harder to do because it's mostly mental: reading, reacting and processing the correct solution that the defense provided within a second or two. It's harder to see on film, it's harder to evaluate. That's why I think there's a divergence between fans yelling "noodle armed middle schooler!!" and analysts going "hold up, let's not write him off yet" I personally need to see the Chiefs game be the start of growth before getting hopeful. Ideally would like to see 1-2 300yd multi td games. Then I'd expect the entire off season to fix his footwork. With his physical limitations that footwork needs to be damn near perfect. I would still bring in competition at the QB spot even in that scenario. -
When a QB has an average or worse arm they need to get every bit of juice out of the arm with efficient and consistent throwing mechanics. Brees' footwork and throwing mechanics were his obsession and his work ethic was close to legendary. For any shot at redemption Bryce needs to dial in his footwork to perfection. That should help maximize his arm strength and increase his accuracy. Until that happens (which is unlikely), I'm writing him off. Even if he does, I still think the ceiling is nowhere near Brees unless some of that "elite processing" starts to show too.

I think this is strictly a developmental thing. Get him some experience calling plays without any of the pressure/expectations idk how it’ll play out but for the first time maybe ever in panthers history it feels like there is an actual plan for development in place not only in the roster but on the coaching staff i love it but I’m a glass half full kind of dude

Out of pie for today, tried to get all the tweets and links. Thanks for the updates yall. -
I believe Lasso is loosely based on one of the Harbaughs. Pete Carroll was a positive/energetic coach. I'm sure there are others that lean more lasso like. It's not a typical style but there is some success at the NFL level.

I'm drinking the kool aid on Canales. Absolutely loving the non-generic coach speak answers.

Where would the Panthers be if they sat Bryce Young last season?

Everyone that still thinks Reich was a good coach needs to watch this interview with Jeff Saturday where he touches on cleaning up after Reich in Indianapolis. Here's an appetizer: McAfee: So everything I had heard about that building was that it was in ruins....A lot of people in that building had the same message it was like, our culture has completely gone to hell. There are people missing meetings, there are people missing treatments, there are guys actually gambling against the Indianapolis Colts actually that are on the team. The building just kind of fell apart. So Jeff is coming in here and he's going to be a guy that's going to take it on the shins from everybody as he has to re-instate what a professional football team looks like. Is that an accurate depiction of what you had to do? And your first day in there were you caught off guard completely about what you were walking in to? Saturday: It was more than I anticipated I'll put it like that, I'll church it up a little bit. There was a lot of what you're saying going on. I think Irsay knew that... Continuing to have any faith in him as a head coach after these comments and what we saw last year is insane. Great guy, horrible head coach. -

CJ Henderson and TMJ appear to be healthy scratches... lol -
Chart is not mine, found on reddit. PFF grades so take with a grain of salt but... Mingo gets poor separation and has some of the worst catch point & YAC in the league. Actually all of our receivers that are not Adam Thielen have very poor separation. Tank is up there with some high performing WRs.

I'll be honest, listening to a few minutes of this interview really changed my perspective on Robbie. He seems like a man who's put a lot of work on maturing, getting his priorities in order and trying his best to put his head on straight. Hope he balls out this year.

What I want? One of the top 3 LTs or a trade down. What I think we'll actually get? Malik Willis at 6.
-
Malik Willis at #6.

That's fair. I've really only glanced at 2021 tape after the media started talking about him as QB1 and nothing before then. And keep in mind I was responding to someone asking if his ceiling is Teddy Bridgewater. I don't think that's the best comp, he's more willing with the deep ball. He has more of a Derek Carr like ceiling in my mind, but that absolutely does not mean he'll reach his ceiling. Most prospects don't, and I see no reason why Pickett would be any different. I'm not a huge fan of Pickett but wouldn't be upset if he was the choice. I learned my lesson that I know nothing about talent evaluation after I was cursing the front office for drafting CMC. If we do draft a QB this year, I'd prefer Malik Willis.

IMO, yes. I've watched a few Pickett vs (team) clips on youtube but I'm by no means an expert at scouting QBs. Couple things that I remember Goes through progressions well Mechanics are good Not afraid to take deep shots Can vary release/arm angle Great control of the offense To elaborate on the mechanics, a lot of the time he was in sync with his "hitches" and reads. IDK man, I'm not a scout or QB mechanics expert or even good at my day job but that bounce thing where the QB goes through progressions but also lines up his feet and hips to the target? I'm calling that a hitch. First hitch he was looking at the first read with his feet aligned, second hitch looked at the second read with his feet aligned, etc. This is something that Darnold notoriously struggled with last year. He would panic and speed up his hitches. He would be on the second or third read but his feet would be who knows where. I'm slightly concerned with his arm strength if he tries to throw off platform. I thought he ran the ball a little more than I'd like to see at the NFL level. I'd say his ceiling is Carr which isn't a bad thing but my personal preference is boom or bust for QBs. I would not be upset if he was our choice at 6.

And explicitly mentioned hand size as a factor. It may be nothing? It may be a glimmer of hope that Pickett ain't high on McAdoo's list.
-
McAdoo's thoughts on Baker Mayfield, relevant part bolded and underlined: https://brownswire.usatoday.com/2018/07/15/ben-mcadoos-wacky-qb-rankings-had-baker-mayfield-no-6/ McAdoo's view of that QB class: 1. Josh Allen 2. Lamar Jackson 3. Sam Darnold 4. Josh Rosen 5. Mason Rudolph 6. Baker Mayfield Just food for thought...

fug it I'll play devil's advocate here. Couple of things I can see making "sense" Out of cap hell in 2022 so 1 year for $18.9 million isn't the worst case scenario Commitment, trust, faith, confidence builder if he worked out and reached his potential you have him cheap while working on long term deal (or franchise tag / sign and trade / etc.) If it doesn't work out, it still shows Carolina as a place not afraid take risks on projects (injury, poor performance or otherwise) which could have an impact on signing future free agents If it doesn't work out, it's easy to move on. He's on the roster next year so there's some stability in the QB room even if he's not the starter and then he's easily cut and no one could blame the Panthers for cutting him given what he showed on the field It may have been part of the trade? IDK I'm grasping at straws here With those points being made, I think it was a poor decision that sucks for next year but it'll easily be history afterwards.

CMC Injury Update: "Less than grade 1" hamstring strain
shaka replied to shaka's topic in Carolina Panthers
Good point, it's a strain. I have no idea how to change the title or else I would. -
