That's why I've been pretty adamant I want Bryce to either really, really succeed and become the franchise QB we all hoped he would be after he was drafted, or really really fail and we could cut him and move on. Those numbers scare the bejebus out of me and with Tepper being involved in the big decisions, it makes it even more nerve wracking. This up and down, good week, bad week, winning in spite of a bad day for Bryce, is just about the worst thing we could have had happen. Seeing what Arizona paid Kyler and they're ready to walk away and be done feels like staring into the future right now if things continue along the same pattern of good week, bad week.

I think a lot has to do with a significant amount of injuries increasing as well. It seems like this year especially, there have just been a ridiculous number of injuries across the board. There's not really a 1 and 2 receiver because most teams have been lucky just to keep a number 1 on the field. If you go and look at the list of injuries to RB, WR and TE this year, it's pretty appalling how many guys have missed time.

Icky is exactly who he was coming out of college. Run mauling tackle but below average pass pro at the NFL level. Charles Cross was the pass pro ready tackle. It was always going to take a couple of years to get him up to the NFL level for pass blocking. Icky has earned his extension because he's right on pace with where he should be given where he started. The difference between Bryce and Icky is most drafted QBs still with their team don't play on their 5th year option. They get an extension after year 3. The exceptions to this are rare. That's not saying that Bryce wouldn't play on the remainder of his rookie deal, or the 5th year, if that's all we offered. I'm just pointing out that that hasn't been the trend, and it's something I'm sure his agent is well aware of when it comes to negotiation time. Trevor Lawrence: Jacksonville Jaguars, 5 years, $275 million Joe Burrow: Cincinnati Bengals, 5 years, $275 million Justin Herbert: Los Angeles Chargers, 5 years, $262.5 million Brock Purdy: San Francisco 49ers, 5 years, $265 million Jalen Hurts: Philadelphia Eagles, 5 years, $255 million Kyler Murray: Arizona Cardinals, 5 years, $230.5 million These are some of the recent extensions. Icky's contract would be around half of this. The question becomes then, if we plugged in an average QB behind a line of Icky, Lewis, Mayes, Hunt and Moton, would the results be similar, better or worse to Bryce with an extension behind ?, ? Mayes, Hunt and Moton? Icky, Corbett and Lewis would likely be cap casualties. That's why I question the Bryce option. It's whether or not we're stupid enough to pay an extension if it comes to that, because I definitely don't think it's warranted baring a SB appearance that Bryce drags the entire team with him based on his 3 years of Jekyll/Hyde performance and his still less than desirable mechanics, footwork, and other issues.

Bryce might be the most frustrating player we've ever had.
SmokinwithWilly replied to OneBadCat's topic in Carolina Panthers
If they touched the ball and equal amount of times a game, I could see the argument. But Bryce, being the overall #1 and a QB savant, never having back to back complete games looking like a franchise QB is about as frustrating as you can get year 3. He does what he does in ATL and the week before did what he did vs NO. XL can be benched, Bryce can't. Dalton is worse by a country mile. -
Im not disagreeing with your logic and it would be mine as well. We've just seen a lot of stupid things play out when it comes to Bryce and the way he's been handled. I have no idea what big daddy Dave will mandate though. He's not exactly been the best at leaving football decisions to football people.

Scott FOWLER on Chuba in Observer
SmokinwithWilly replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's simple. Play the hot hand. Rico was hot. Play him. This week Chuba had it. Play him. You can tell pretty quick in a game who's feeling it and who isn't. I don't understand why everyone is trying to make this so damn complex. -
Fitts fuged up the Burns contract by not taking the trade. He lost his leverage at that point. That level offer was for a top 3 complete edge rusher which Burns never was. It should never have been a debate. Take the Rams offer if we weren't going to pay Burns that type of contract. Icky should get paid. Where it will get interesting is when/if Bryce demands an extension after this year. If he follows the trend of 1st round QBs drafted and immediately starting for their team, and still with them, end of 3rd year is extension time. If Bryce demands his 45-50m per season and Morgan/Tepper pays it, I see Icky starting for someone else and us looking to the draft or FA market for a new LT.

The entire offense rises or falls with Bryce. XL may be our most frustrating receiver but Bryce is Jekyll and Hyde. -
He got dared to watch 2 girls 1 cup.
-
True. But he's fun to watch until his career ends next year on IR.
-
Same thing a lot of people said about Cam at the beginning of his career when he was getting hit 3x more than anyone other QB. Ironic that Cam's career didn't end on one of the many helmet to helmet hits the NFL was adamant on getting rid of, but on that hit to the shoulder.

Just went back looking through threads and it was 29.7m this year before the deal. I'm all for paying tackles. It's when you lump in the guards I see problems on the horizon. IOL are guys that can be replaced in the draft pretty easily if you keep on top of it. -

His cap hit this year is now 23 and change. 2027 is 28m with a 13m dead cap if we cut him. Dayum. I could get a lot of sushi with that kind of pocket change. -
Andy is doing the job he was hired to do which is basically nothing. They could have paid me half that and accomplished just as much.
-
He'd fit in Buffalo because that's what Allen has really been lacking this year. He hasn't had that deep ball threat to throw it to. Now what could we get for him? Not much I'm afraid because his bone headed plays stand out just as much as his good ones do.

Pay me 40m to become the next off season guru of the Panthers for 9 weeks of my 7 year contract in 2026. I'll even throw a pizza party for the Huddle with a 6 pack of Bojangle's hard tea for everyone. It won't do the Panthers any good, but it's ultimate success for me anyway.

Nope. Was Morgan this past off season. 2 year 44 million extension with 40 guaranteed and a 21.35 signing bonus. -
This Bryce Guy (General BY Discussion)

If we weren't facing the 5th year option this off season I would be able to enjoy this more from a fan's perspective. I don't trust the FO, and by that I mainly mean Dave and Nicole, to make the right move for this organization moving forward. It's been 8 years of suckage and I don't want to get locked into another 5 because of a couple of feel good wins that end up being a mirage and not reality. And is that Bryce's fault? Not entirely. It's really just a history of Tepper and the FO doing really dumb things. -

SmokinwithWilly replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
We're not happy because we're facing having to pick up a 5th year option or an extension and still have NO IDEA who Bryce is as a QB. He has great moments, but he has yet to put together back to back great games. We haven't had back to back winning seasons in 30 years, so asking for back to back franchise QB game performances from your QB isn't a whole hell of a lot to ask for. -
Adam Thielen Requests and is Granted Release
SmokinwithWilly replied to Proudiddy's topic in Carolina Panthers
I didn't think it was weird. It's his final year. He thought the Vikings had a shot at making a real playoff run and his wife wanted to go back to Minnesota where they have roots. Carolina does nothing to upgrade the QB room, Bryce's past performances would lead him to think this is a paycheck, nothing more. I totally get why he'd want out of here. He wanted a shot at a ring and let's be honest, no one had Carolina making any serious deep playoff runs. He's still trying to get a shot at a ring. -

SmokinwithWilly replied to OneBadCat's topic in Carolina Panthers
One of the reasons I really didn't like the timing of the Moton extension. Not knowing how Bryce was going to perform and how the option/extension was going to play out, that flexibility of not having that guaranteed $$$ could do a lot moving forward with getting Icky signed. There was nothing wrong with waiting until the end of the season to see how all of this played out then extending him if we felt the need to do so. -
It's actually why I thought we should have opened it up against ATL in the first game when we were up big. What was the worst that could happen. It's not like the score was 28-3 and they were mounting a comeback with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Sling it around some.

That's if he doesn't push to have his extension like other QBs that have remained with their teams have done following year 3. Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Herbert, Hurts, Lawrence all got their extensions after year 3. Lamar played out his 5th year. That's why I said the 5th year and extension could be a potential clusterfug. His agent could very well push for the extension. Lamar didn't have an agent to advise him. Playing out the 5th year is not the norm at all. -

SmokinwithWilly replied to OneBadCat's topic in Carolina Panthers
Moton is a lock next year. His dead cap if cut is in the 20s. Hunt is too. His hit is too big. Lewis could be a casualty and Corbett certainly is one. Mays, dunno. If we keep him, unless we plan on drafting a center, he could pursue starting money. That's why I thought paying Hunt and Lewis was insane instead of drafting guards and a center with Icky's contract looming on the horizon. This 5th year and extension is a potential clusterfug. -
That's a little different than signing a 5th year extension then bringing in another player to push the guy you just extended. Drafting a QB to sit on the bench and learn is how it used to be done and QBs actually perform better generally when they do have that opportunity instead of being plugged into the starting lineup right away.
