Are the Panthers still coddling Bryce?
SmokinwithWilly replied to Jackson113.2's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think we should have tried to iimprove our QB room. Dalton as a mentor is fine but I don't want him playing long term. We should always be trying to improve, even in the backup QB spot. I'm more concerned about the team than a year one particular player. Look at Purdy, Dak, and Brady. All young backup players that had success once they had an opportunity to injury. Players that started moving forward. Jimmy G was a backup that was traded for a 2nd. These are exceptions to the rule, but you'll never find the gem if you never look. We should be developing multiple QBs all the time. BY is the starter for now but should always feel pushed. I don't want the team to fall apart if BY suffers an injury. Next man up. Always try to improve the caliber of players on your team. -
If Bryce doesn’t produce, we moving on?

Bryce has to show significant improvement, even if we don't win. I don't understand not bringing in competition at the QB position. Dalton is not the answer if Bryce gets injured. We should always be trying to improve the QB room. There are multiple examples of backups that ended up being better than the starter following an injury. I don't think that this team is going to magically turn around with one of the worst defenses in the NFL returning, but with new faces. The things I need to see. 1. Quick progressions and decisions for getting rid of the ball, whether that's to a receiver or sidelines. 2. Multiple long sustained drives every game 3. Confidence. We need that swag back. He was showing it at the end of the season. We need a full season of that. 4. Less fumbles. He can't cough it up when someone gets to him. 5. IT. Some QBs have it, some don't. You know it when you see it. 6. More game winning drives where BY is the one leading it and doing it. I don't consider handing the ball off 3 times and kicking a FG a game winning drive for Bryce. I need to see him put the team on his back like Cam used to do. If we don't see several of those things, I think we have to consider moving on. Can't offer BY starter money and a huge chunk of the cap if he's JAG. -
The Etienne pick was atrocious. Would much rather triple dipped and gone with Sawyer at that point or an OL.

Also any team taking him has to deal with his dad. I'm guessing coach Deion is as bad an omen as his interviews. -

Come on. Take Shadeur. I wanna watch a train wreck -
Always draft an oline every year. 9 of 53 players on the roster. At least 1 pick should be devoted there.

I'm wondering if Deion is a huge part of the problem. You're not just drafting Shadeur, you're drafting Prime Time as well and I can't imagine the thought of having to put up with his constant input is going to be appealing or appreciated, especially at the Giants where the coach and GM jobs are on the line. If those guys are out at the end of the year, you can bet Deion would be after the HC job and his son would make that push as well. -

I'm thinking Johnson. They can wait for him to get better and get a top 10 talent. -

Round 1 - Panthers Select Tetairoa McMillan at Pick 8
SmokinwithWilly replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's not crazy. I remember something about Stroud wanting Tank Dell and Houston taking him because of it. -
He can catch the freaking ball. It's a trait we haven't in it feels like forever. I'm happy we finally have a receiver that actually knows how to use his hands and catch the damn ball.

One of the things that worries me about Jaycee and that contract is they're starting to get a lot more ticky tack about hands on DBs. Could be Morgan anticipated the coming changes in the NFL, but I'm not willing to give him that much credit yet. -
Will the Panthers Trade Out of the #8 Pick
SmokinwithWilly replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
Absolutely. You never know where that 1st is going to end up. I know people say future 1sts aren't worth as much, but our 1st turned into the number 1 overall pick. How many of us said we should have traded Burns for those 2 1sts and 2nd? IF we had, we could have likely kept our picks, Moore, and used the Rams picks instead of our own which would have given us even more collateral when we traded out of the 1st spot to keep BY. Unless there is a bonafide HoF talent, like Peppers, sitting there at that draft spot, you have to be open to move, regardless of the team you're trading with. You just have to make division opponents pay more because well, fug em. -

You've watched the Panthers on draft day. That's the only way we play. -
At pick 57 and Shavon Revel Jr. is still available??
SmokinwithWilly replied to Basbear's topic in 2015 NFL Draft
I'm not a fan of drafting injured players, but cornerback is more valuable than RB for drafting purposes. -
Agreed. I don't think there's a true elite going to be there at 8. This draft just doesn't have that feel to me. If we can move down a few spots, pick up an extra 2nd and possibly a 3rd, we could try to fill in the holes we have on D or grab a guy that slid out of the 1st for whatever reason. No guys with raw potential. Don't get fancy.

Trading Down Could be a Gold Mine in This Draft!!
SmokinwithWilly replied to Hoenheim's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm always a fan of trading down unless there is an elite player at the pick. There's just too many blue chip players to be found in the early 2nd and 3rd rounds that can be very low risk, starter caliber as long as you're not constantly reaching for project players. But damn, we love guys that are raw projects. -
Schoen reminds me of Matt Rhule as a GM. Throw poo at the wall and see what sticks and when it doesn't play dumb.
