I don't want it either. I thought it was a terrible signing this year. Just saying I won't be surprised at all if we option Bryce and extend Dalton so Bryce isn't threatened for his remaining time here.

Here's why it matters. Most NFL linemen range between 6'3 and 6'6. Using myself as reference, from the top of my head to shoulders is 11 inches. These guys have bigger shoulders than me and pads so adding back 4 isnt unrealistic. So their shoulder level would average 5'8 to 5'11. My eyes on the other hand are 4.5" from the top of my head. For Bryce, even at 5'10, that means his vision level is 5'5.5" but we can round up to 5'6". That's why those 2 inches matter. They're literally the difference between seeing over the shortest lineman or not at all. And when Bryce is standing next to Kyler Murray who is also 5'10", they don't look the same height. Bryce looks shorter. So when people like me bitch about physical limitations, he's staring 5 of them over 2 feet wide in the shoulders every play, and that doesnt even account for defensive linemen.

Maybe if they let Vic Romano and Kenny Blankenship commentate with Guy LeDeuche on the side lines.

If we option Bryce, expect a 1 yr extension for Dalton.

I think the qualification has changed over time though. A deep ball play used to take 4 to 6 seconds for the receiver to get to that spot on the field. Now a receiver can be there in 2.5. That's less time than most QBs have to set and throw. In my mind a deep route takes time to develop. A crossing route and a deep route can't take the same amount of time at full speed. You can have 4 deep balls on the same drive, almost 5 if you do 5 20 yard throws goal line to goal line. That doesn't even make sense when you say it out loud.

Kind of strange that half a yard outside the red zone, a TD toss is considered a deep throw.

I don't know if they were or not. The one thing I do know is they were all more viable than ancient Andy Dalton. It's just very strange optics. Even if you believe Bryce is the guy, injuries happen. You don't want to lose your playoff run because you couldn't be bothered to try and improve your QB room at all. I know it was lightning in a bottle, but the Eagles won a SB with Foles when Wentz went down. You gotta improve the room when the opportunity presents itself for next to nothing, relatively speaking.

Options were available. Anyone who saw Andy play last year knew he was cooked and another offseason wasn't going to turn back the clock any. The problem was if Bryce started off cold, which he did, and a backup like Brissett, Jameis, or even god forbid Wilson came in and outperformed Bryce after another benching or phantom injury, it was possible he never saw the field again. That could never even be in the realm of possibilities. It was all in with Bryce this year, but we really didnt need to put Dalton on a 2 year contract. If we give Bryce the 5th year, I expect Dalton will get a year extension to carry him through Bryce's contract term.

I think the windows are so small now teams are shooting their shots when they think they have a chance. 1st rounders aren't a guarantee of elite talent, plenty of flops, especially in the back half. You just got to hope you get it right. If not. Oh wee man.
