It all depends on if the coaching staff believes in him. I'm not in a position to say that. If Chicago offered us 2 1sts, 2 2nds and 3rd to move up would you stay put and take a guy from a small school that's going to take a couple years to develop. That's a lot of capitol put in front of you to build a complete team. That's a lot of capitol to move up next year and take Howell if you think he's the guy. It all depends on how the coaches feel about likely the 4th or 5th rated QB in this years draft.

It makes sense in some respects. We have a lot of pieces we need to fill, and the desperation to get a new QB for a lot of teams has driven the price through the roof. While we have to give up a 2nd and some cap space, this isn't a 40m a year contract and it isn't 2-3 1sts plus. That's what we may have had to give up to move to 5. I fully expect us to trade down if Lance is on the board. We can get a lot from one of the teams that could still be looking to trade up. If the top 4 are gone, maybe someone moves up for Jones, or we stay put and grab Sewell, Slater, Chase, a top CB. This opens up a lot of room to maneuver, even if we are out some cap space.
-
And if we drafted Lance or Fields at 8, we would still be just 1-2 seasons away and we could be potentially without 2 1sts and more.
-
This. So if Darnold sucks like he did in NY, we would be in line for a top 2 pick. Not that terrible to give up a 2nd to get your franchise QB.
-
Having the same philosophy is important. If they're on the same page together it will help bring him along faster in our offense. Trust isn't easy to build, but having a coach that believes in you will certainly help.
-
That's where I am too. And with Chicago, Denver, Washington, New England all looking for franchise guys, if Lance or Fields is sitting there at 8, then maybe we get 2 1sts and some 2nds from another team. We're so used to Hurney and Gettleman both trying to swing for the fences, it's possible that this FO is playing 4d chess and we just don't know what it looks like.

Im actually a little excited about this. I don't think Darnold is as bad as everyone claims. Coaching means a lot and Gase was one of the worst. People defend Cam by pointing out his lack of supporting cast in NE and how they didn't help him at all, even with Belicheck. The same arguments could be made of Darnold, except his coach wasn't fit to coach pop warner. After watching Rhule get his players rise above their talent this year, except for TB, I think Darnold could surprise us. Plus this allows us to get a starting LT possibly. I actually like our options in the draft a whole lot more now. If Lance is sitting there at 8 we could potentially trade down and pick up an extra 1st or more depending on who wants to move. Maybe grab Sewell/Slater/Darisaw. I'm ok with this.

Go on record. Who still wants Watson?
SmokinwithWilly replied to Sasquatch's topic in Carolina Panthers
Social media will try and convict anyone without one ounce of evidence. Faux outrage from people willing to shame and degrade for their 15 minutes. The goal being to wear down Watson into a multi million dollar settlement and Buzbee gets his cut. Who needs an actual court when you can use a social media firestorm to do it for you? I'm not saying Watson's guilty or innocent because I dont know. This is just how "justice" is done now. Facts are not important, opinion is all that matters. -
We want 2 1sts, 3 2nds, and 2 3rds for Teddy B. Doesn’t mean it’s gonna happen.
-
Go for the heated version. More expensive but worth it on those cold winter nights.

Davis Mills is my sleeper. I think he could be good but he needs some time to get up to NFL speed. I'd love to see him in the later rounds. Could he be any worse than Grier?
-
I was being a little sarcastic but he's probably a very safe pick. I dont think top 10 but he's safe.

Smokescreen so we can draft Parsons.

Superb O.... fug it, I can't even say it.

Tyler Lockett, also paid. The market is setting!

So if our top QBs are gone along with Sewell/Slater and Pitts, do we grab Chase? Kind of a luxury pick with a lot of needs but with RA and DJ as FA at the end of season, we aren’t left on the wrong side going into negotiations. -
It all depends on where you think Slater will end up. If it’s at tackle, then Sewell/Slater/Pitts. If at guard it’s Sewell/Pitts/Slater.
-
Because the game changing talent that is available at 4 is majority offense. If they trade down, yeah, I can see them going D. But if they stay at 4, Sewell, Chase, Slater or Pitts are better than any defensive player.

"I'll be shocked if it's not Mac Jones to 49ers."
SmokinwithWilly replied to Ivan The Awesome's topic in Carolina Panthers
If they like Lance better, then the better for us. We make the move to 5 and take Fields. While Gettleman was an egotistical asshole, the one thing I did like about him was his personnel decisions were for the most part emotionless and what he believed was the best course for the franchise. I see the new guys for Atl and Det doing the same. -

It may be toxic but you have to look at the reality around you. After 2 years Ryan is likely going to be a cap casualty. Father time is not on his side. You have the opportunity to get your franchise guy. You take it. Ryan isn't stupid. He knows he can't play forever and he will understand a business decision. It doesn't mean he'll like it, but these guys know they can get cut at any point. That's why they go for so much guaranteed money. It's the only guarantee they truly have. How long can you realistically expect Ryan to continue before noticeable decline? Are you willing to put your GM future at risk for him? Also, these are new coaches. They don't have any predetermined loyalties to Goff or Ryan. They may not be their guys. It's much easier to recover from a single bad 1st round pick. And there is no other position that is as important as QB. Teams are recognizing more and more the value of a rookie QB on a rookie deal. There's a lot that can be done with your salary cap when you have a young QB on his rookie deal years 3-5. That's likely 30-40m a year, depending on how QB salaries continue to rise, to go out and get play makers. You can get some key filler guys with that kind of scratch. I'm not saying Atlanta or Detroit will draft a QB, but I don't think it's completely out of the question because Ryan and Goff have big money deals. There's a lot of things at play in this decision. If I were the coach or GM I would definitely be considering it, Detroit especially. Goff isn't my ride or die QB choice if it came to job security. Same with Atlanta. Or as GM do you use a single pick at the most important position in football to possibly solidify your franchise for the next 10 years? My personal thought. I'm using a single pick and taking a QB (if they are my guy) and taking care of my franchise and my job. -
I take this with a grain of salt. Sometimes it's harder to perform when you're being watched by 100 people criticizing every move. You can overthink it. It's one of the things I hate about my recertification practicals. I have people standing over me every step of the way. It freaks me out a little and I don't do well. Put me in the field and I can do my job all day long without even hesitating or questioning myself a little. Game day tape matters more.

No. Your assertion was that only married people should have kids. Commitment isn't defined by a piece of paper nor does it qualify them to be a parent. Over half the marriages in this country end in divorce. Using that as the measuring stick to define who should and shouldn't be allowed to be a parent is a weak standard. -

SmokinwithWilly replied to Sasquatch's topic in Carolina Panthers
Just because 2 people are married doesn't qualify them as parents. There are tons of married couples who have no business being parents. A couple that has been together for 25 years and doesn't get their relationship legally recognized in no way makes them incapable of raising kids. And how many people are still married that shouldn't be? A piece of paper doesn't mean you have a good relationship and are capable of raising children. The hardest question on that test is what's your name. -
There's a few things I would do. 1. If Fields is there, draft him to be the eventual replacement for Ryan. I know, I know, they still have Ryan, but if you have a chance to get your future QB, you take him. And sitting on the bench for a year would actually benefit him rather than being thrown into the fire to become franchise savior. Ryan gets hurt and Fields gets playing time. Also, franchise QB for 1 draft pick vs having to possibly spend 3 1st plus extras 2 years from now. 2. Draft Sewell if no drafted QB. It's not Pitts or a QB, but Sewell is a franchise LT and those are the 2nd hardest thing to come by. 3. Pitts - Great TE prospect and we all see how much of a mismatch an elite TE can be. Do I think it's a little early for Pitts? Yes, but with the right OC he could be a real weapon if he pans out 4. Trade down to a team not name Carolina in love with a QB. I particularly think Denver could be in play here. Slide down to 9, still grab a CB or Pitts if he's there, possibly even Chase or Smith for a wicked 3 headed monster at WR and still be in good position to move on from Julio and his contract.

I found this interesting re: first round QBs
SmokinwithWilly replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
So for T2G that would be what, 10 yards? -
Minshew for a 5th and I'd be happy. Darnold has all the talent but did he get ruined by Gase. I'd go as high as a 3rd comp for Darnold. Jimmy G, no thanks. If we could get Minshew, that's the route I would go first. Better than Teddy, not afraid to sling it, and with some receivers he might be able to do something. Keep our 1st and 2nd, get Sewell/Slater at 8 and Humphrey at 39 if he's available to start at guard then slide to center next year. If he's not, go safety and grab an IOL in 3 or 4.
