If you want to celebrate a win, feel free. I'm bigger picture at this point. I've seen this team screw itself over and over again with wins that don't really matter and everyone has forgotten by the first snap of camp. And Ive seen enough mediocrity to last a lifetime, and calling the last 6 years mediocrity would be generous. Dalton's career is all but over. But we should never stop looking for our next QB. Even with the GOAT, Billy B still drafted and looked for his next QB just in case. I'm ready for bigger picture football. Once we actually do that, then I'll start celebrating wins against really bad teams. It's just where I'm at as a fan.

We have Dalton and possibly Plummer ATM. Neither are great options. The time to address this was in the off season when we actively chose to not bring in any real competition. Bryce played Josh Rosen level bad last year. 1st pick or not, you can't just hand the starting position to that level of QB play and be taken seriously. After the 1st 2 games he was benched and many were blaming the supporting cast, but then Dalton lit up the Raiders with the same cast. If you're willing to bench him 2 games into the season, you're openly admitting he wasn't ready to be the only option at starter. We have no good options right now and that is a huge failure of the FO. We didn't win today because of BY, we won in spite of him. Chuba carried this team. Bryce did nothing extraordinary. He played a game you would expect to see from any backup QB in the league. If the Giants D wasn't so horrible against the run, do you think BY would have been able to put 300 yards and 3 scores on the board? I don't and that's my problem. When the game is on the line, and we saw it twice today (Coker and Chuba) he couldn't make the pass. That's a basic NFL pass. Daboll didn't respect him enough and punted away with 3 minutes on the clock and had the ball back in under a minute. Maybe I'm wrong and BY becomes great and that would be the best thing for the team and I will happily eat crow. The worst thing is he becomes mediocre and we consider that success and stop trying to get better at the position and we live every year somewhere between 6-8 wins.

Bryce failing is horrible for this team and I don't want him to fail. I want him to succeed because we need him to succeed. But I'm not going to pretend that what he's doing has been anything short of backup level football, and a bad backup at that. Nothing I've seen says we should stop looking for a starting level QB.
-
Bingo. He was crowned played of the game when Chuba clearly put that offense on his back and carried them down the field over and over again.

There comes a point when you have to look at BY game and ask yourself, based on his performance, if he hadnt been the 1st overall pick, would he be starting in this league, or even a backup ? For me, the answer is simple, no. Bryce's game stats are what most QBs accomplish in a half or less on a regular basis. We can win games, but the ultimate goal should always be to make this team a contender. I'm over the feel good wins. At some point you have to accept reality. To compete in a pass friendly league you have to be able to throw the ball with consistency, accuracy, and strength. We're not doing that and we're not getting a winning season, much less into the playoffs, until we do.

Picking high gives you a better opportunity to draft great players. But you still have to actually select the right one, which we suck at. -

Chuba had 27 more rushing yards than Bryce had passing. -

That's why I never saw an issue with them taking a QB. Sitting him and letting him develop like Love behind Rodgers. It's good for these guys to get some time to sit and learn.

Where have you been? Center has been an issue since Ryan Kalil's neck injury. We haven't had a solid center in almost a decade. The IOL has been god awful. KC has the best IOL in football and they are all players that many of us were screaming to draft because we recognize how weak our IOL was. BY showed nothing other than 1 half of competent football against one of the worst defenses in the NFL last year. He was the worst starting QB in football last year. 33rd with only 32 teams. Someone's backup was better than our draft prodigy. Yes, Bryce needed real competition because he was benched 2 games into this season because anyone with eyes could see he wasn't ready to be an NFL starter. If you want to compete for something other than the 1st pick, you need real QB competition. A 2-15 team can't afford to draft an injured RB that's not going to contribute immediately. With holes all over the place, RB was a luxury the team couldn't afford. We have no pass rush, but we got Jerry Jones' guy. High 5's all around. BPA is OK but if the BPA is a RB 4 rounds in a row it doesn't make sense to take 4 RBs. You have to build a team that can compete. We're in serious contention for back to back 1st picks and Morgan had a hand in building both those teams. Has he made some good draft picks. It appears so. But when it comes to team building, that's a whole different story.

If there's another QB that came to the combine after packing on 15 lbs of water weight to hide his playing weight, I don't remember it. I understand it's all part of the pre-draft game, and he participated. The FO was stupid and ignored huge red flags. On a side note though, I was at the airport a few weeks ago and saw a basketball team going through and decided to try and look through them. I'm 6'2 and these guys were 6'6 and up. I was amazed by how much I couldn't see around them. And these guys weren't 300 plus in pads. I still think he's having a hell of a time seeing the field at the NFL speed.

It absolutely is on him for doing it and I'd wager he used a good bit of that psychology major to help him through interviews because he could read people better than most. The Panthers should have recognized it for what it was, hell, we all did, but you can't absolve him just because everyone else does it. 38 Million guaranteed.

We're doomed. LG & CWC agree. The apocalypse has begun. -
That and you can bet that big ass paycheck came with an ironclad NDA.

Can We Not Over React to This One Game??
SmokinwithWilly replied to Hoenheim's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don't blame every last thing on BY, but at this point, my genuine concern is play whoever is best to develop our other talent on offense. -
How do you give a poo when you're hired to do a job and have your legs taken out from under you before you even have a chance? He wasn't even allowed to have his choice of tools to do his job. That's like asking me to replace a motor and handing me a hammer.

Even before the draft, BY was supposed to have the highest floor but had the lowest ceiling of the top 3. Just turned out that Stroud's floor was higher than Young's ceiling from the start. -
Part of why I want to see Plummer play if/when BY is benched again. Let's see if he's backup material or not in a real game scenario. Who knows, maybe he balls out, most likely not. Either way, we evaluate and move on or he's our next backup QB. It's time this team got serious about the QB position.
-
I guess breaking an NFL record just doesn't carry the same weight it used to.
-
Kind of hard to give a poo when the owner cuts your balls off in front of the NFL on draft day. BY wasn't Frank's pick. Stroud was a far better fit for the type of offense Frank liked to run.

Rookie Tracking - Some Good Signs
SmokinwithWilly replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
I find what he's done less than impressive. We've got a historically bad defense, an offense that can barely average 2 tds a game, and a QB that wouldn't be on a practice squad after last season if he wasn't the 1st overall pick. The biggest issue I have is going into the season without bringing in competition for BY. As a former MLB, there is no way he looked at BYs footage and said this guy is so good he shouldn't have any camp competition, only to have him benched after 2 games. We dumped an insane amount of resources to answer a question this MB already knew the answer to, BY ain't it, and for what, 2 wins against terrible defenses? And the best he's looked so far came against a shitting of the bed so bad it literally set an NFL record. What we're seeing from this team is not good. Maybe we've gotten a few possible good pieces, but this overall team is not impressive in the slightest. -
He's not looking so bad these last couple drives.

Absolutely fixed.
