For the 2023 season, the Panthers may be in a similar position to the 2022 Falcons: Improving in terms of the on-field product without actually exceeding the previous year’s win total. I’m especially dubious about Carolina’s improvements on offense, where they’re counting on good health and big contributions from rookies and players who need to improve significantly to raise the floor and ceiling of one of the league’s more forgettable 2022 offenses. They’ll get there eventually if Young is any good, as he should be, but the early returns are unlikely to be pretty. The Panthers offense has potential, but also more question marks than Riddler’s pajamas. It’s hard to imagine a group with this many question marks putting on a fireworks show against Atlanta, so it will be a good—but should not be a strenuous—test of the Falcons’ defense. There just isn’t enough here yet, especially with some suspect links along the offensive line, to feel like Carolina’s offense is going to come out of the gate ready to score 25 points. And the Falcons themselves? We’ve spent an offseason talking about them, but they’re effectively matchup-proof as a run game with Bijan Robinson, This is in many ways an ideal first game for Atlanta, as it pits an improved squad against a scrappy divisional rival they should beat. It’s all about how hot the Falcons start and how real their 2023 improvement is, and Carolina is just talented and well-coached enough to steal one away if the Falcons are slow and sloppy to begin the year. Make no mistake, though: This should be the dawn of a new era in Atlanta, and they should start 1-0 for the first time in a long while. So....here's hoping the Panther offense scores 25+ points and the match-up proof Robinson has under 100 yds, a lost fumble, and drops 2 passes.

There is also an argument that all the whiffs he had were not a factor of the DC. How many times did it look like he had the sack and then let the QB get away? Finishing has been an issue. That being said...I would lean to the $26 mil. (Good research by the way)

Burns and Bosa came into the league in the same year and both are getting or trying to get deals done now. Bosa's production well above Burns (Parsons ahead of Burns too). If Burns wants to get some incentives...fine.....and I hope he earns it. At this time his production is ranked 9th over the past 2 years. He should get paid a guaranteed amount based on that.

$26M is 76% of what Bosa got. His production not at that level for the past 2 years (see my chart above.)

So...if he wants to compare himself to Bosa...contract numbers should be fine.

Good thread @Mr. Scot. I really like the way Reich is handling things. Wasn't it Sanders who said he came here because he trusted Frank. This team could become a desirable landing spots for free agents. Sounds like that has already started.

First game of the season...everything new....not going into it feeling defeated already. Preseason did not help fan enthusiasm but that was not the point. This staff approached preseason differently than other teams. Best players were limited or did not play and by design the coaches revealed as little as possible about what they would do in the regular season. As a result, the biggest takeaway was that Young is poised in the pocket and throws with anticipation accurately. An old soul in a rookie body. So, I am going into this game an optimist. It is the Falcons...and I really want to beat them. The team will pleasantly surprise a few people week 1. Panthers 27 Atlanta 17.

The Emory Marketing Analytics Center’s and Fanalytics NFL preview includes two original but related analyses. One analysis is an assessment of the NFL's top brands in terms of fan commitment. The second analysis is a deep dive into NFL quarterbacks. This analysis includes the development of a new QB performance measure and a discussion of the QB narratives with which each team will begin the 2022 season. The second analysis will start in late May or early June. The analyses are related because the brand loyalty (I call it Fan Equity) analysis is a snapshot of the moment.
