Thought this was interesting: First-year coordinator Ben Johnson, 36, began opening eyes at the start of the season, deploying a multiple and unique rushing attack that has helped the Lions be far more viable on offense than most would have predicted. Thanksgiving’s stout performance against an elite Buffalo defense was in many ways his national coming-out party. Perhaps you heard Tony Romo gushing about Johnson’s gutsy play calls and intrinsic feel for putting his players in position to succeed. The CBS analyst was merely saying out loud what NFL decision-makers have been whispering since the summer. The more people study Johnson’s approach and schematics — and the more they hear how his players talk about him — the more buzz grows that he has the makings of a head coach himself, quite possibly in 2023. “It looks like what Mike McDaniel is doing in Miami,” longtime NFL broadcaster and analyst Brian Baldinger told me. “All the shifts and motions. I really like when he’s doing with that offense.” Johnson has found a way to roll up points with far more regularity than anticipated. He is getting the very best out of Jared Goff, a system quarterback who was basically a salary dump in the Matt Stafford trade with the Los Angeles Rams. He has helped use shifts and motion to boost an unheralded receiver group and has kept reinventing a gap rushing scheme despite not having his most dynamic cog, D’Andre Swift, close to full health for much of the season. His unit is backed by a defense that is dead last in most key categories, yet Detroit’s offense spearheaded a recent three-game winning streak and nearly pulled off a huge upset of the Bills on Thursday. “I like everything about the guy,” said one longtime NFL evaluator, who has been a part of numerous successful coaching hires. (He spoke on the condition of anonymity to frankly discuss a coach under contract.) “He kind of came out of nowhere, but I’m buying him as a future head coach.” The first-time play caller entered Week 12 with the Lions ranked in the top six in the percentage of drives that reach the red zone and in touchdowns per drive. He has served as a tight ends coach and quarterbacks coach and has an innate ability to process information and understand analytics, according to people who have watched him. Johnson was a math and computer science double major who walked on at North Carolina and ended up playing quarterback for the Tar Heels. He was working in software development and writing code before getting into coaching, and he has studied all aspects of the offensive side of the ball, including working with offensive line guru Chris Foerster in Miami. He’s special,” said another longtime personnel executive, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity. “What he’s had to overcome with injuries and from a personnel standpoint, the way they run the football, what he’s done for Goff: Not many coordinators are doing what he’s doing. You look at the film and the way his players respond to him. That’s how you evaluate a coach. That’s coaching.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/11/26/nfl-coaching-candidates-ben-johnson-demeco-ryans/

Would have never expected him to be a good football coach. Props to him. -
My only concern with keeping Wilks as HC…

He does not have the talent here to do that. -

Look at Buffalo and Denver. It is not always the same answer. -
Did not think I could hope that Darnold plays again. Just can't believe what a mess Baker is.

Jackson missed practice Friday because he was once again sick but coach John Harbaugh expressed confidence that the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback will start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. "He'll be fine," Harbaugh said after practice. "He tried to get to practice but he was just too sick." Asked if he'll play Sunday, Harbaugh replied, "Oh yeah It was a surprise when Jackson was not present at practice but the reason was not a shock. This marked the sixth time that Jackson has been sidelined by illness in the regular season since the start of the 2021 season. Last November, Jackson couldn't play a Week 11 game in Chicago because he was too sick and backup Tyler Huntley led Baltimore to a 16-13 win over the Bears. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35054044/ravens-qb-lamar-jackson-battling-illness-ok-sunday

https://charlotte.axios.com/261266/david-tepper-no-way-in-hell-hed-build-a-domed-stadium-in-charlotte/ “There’s no way in hell … that I would build a domed stadium in Charlotte, especially after Covid. The weather is too beautiful and if anything it shows you it’s an advantage to have that kind of (open-air) building,” Tepper told reporters in Rock Hill, S.C. on Tuesday. He did not, however, rule out a retractable roof, which are much costlier than domed roofs. Tepper said he is “not building the stadium alone,” and that the community would have to be behind it. Presumably, funding could come from Tepper himself, season-ticket holders and the city, county and/or state. Tepper has said the next stadium will be state-of-the-art, one that the team and community could use year round. Having some sort of roof allows for uses like hosting Final Fours and wintertime concerts. Charlotte Pipe & Foundry site has often come up as a possible new location for a new stadium and entertainment district for Tepper Sports. It could still potentially be a new stadium site, Tepper joked, “if (Charlotte Pipe CEO) Roddey Dowd wants to get generous and donate the land to the city.” Charlotte Pipe is not considering donating that land, spokesperson Brad Muller told Axios. He added that the company has nothing new to report regarding a possible sale or talks with Tepper Sports. Tepper still wants to build some sort of entertainment district Uptown near the stadium and near Gateway Station, which’ll include an Amtrak train station. “Coming out of Covid this could be a really good thing to look forward to, and really make Charlotte one of the centers of this part of the South for entertainment.” He added that he hopes apartment buildings don’t go up in the area where the district would be.

This week, several players spoke out about the turf at Bank of America Stadium. However, according to the NFLPA, the Panthers’ home base isn’t one of the stadiums that uses a pure slit film surface, which the union is taking a stand against. The New York Jets and New York Giants (MetLife Stadium), Detroit Lions (Ford Field), Minnesota Vikings (U.S. Bank Stadium), New Orleans Saints (Caesars Superdome), Indianapolis Colts (Lucas Oil Stadium) and Cincinnati Bengals (Paycor Stadium) are the teams coming under fire for the slit-film surfaces. The Panthers have played on the road against the Giants and Bengals this season. Cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver sustained an Achilles injury at MetLife Stadium, which eventually landed him on injured reserve. Against the Bengals, the Panthers avoided major injuries. Still, the Panthers will face the Saints on the road in Week 18, so the Superdome is a concern heading into the finale. As far as the home field is concerned, the Panthers’ management doesn’t seem too concerned. According to a Carolina spokesperson, the team performs an internal study — which is updated weekly — that monitors missed games due to injuries around the league, and the Panthers are in the top quartile of fewest games missed due to injuries. Read more at: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article268817627.html#storylink=cpy Article also says that the turf was not responsible for the high ankle sprains of Darnold, Mayfield, and Walker.

My QB is on a bye. Other QB I have is Aaron Rogers, playing TN...who cannot be trusted these days. Which of these options would you choose? I am leaning toward Daniel Jones because of the opponent,

Happy for Slye and Ron, and the other ex Panthers. I think there was a QB in there too?

Got no support from his GM to get some good players around Cam. Oline was a mess for years.

......Wilks impresses Tepper enough to get the HC gig. I would assume that the interview would involve a lot of talk about offense and what coaches he would bring in. Who would be the young up and coming offensive genius that Wilks could bring in as OC? @Mr. Scot...got some good ideas?
-
I still say Ron, needed a good GM here. Would have made a lot of difference. I have a lot of respect for the man and was happy for the win last night.
